I'm normally used to the usual large spiders, being from Texas,(tarantulas, orb weavers, wolf spiders, garden spiders, etc) but this one was new to me.
Found this guy in our backyard, in a bath mat that had been thrown into the yard. Including links to more pictures, to help aid in identifying. In the one picture, that is my hand, not a child's, he was pretty big. And it is not very visible in the photo, but he had bright orange stripes running down either side of his back.

A bit of a scare here in Georgia, identify?
This could be a Carolina wolf spider, Hogna (formerly Lycosa) carolinensis - see http://tinyurl.com/cacejn for an image. It is the largest wolf spider species in North America; I've seen one with a leg span approaching 4".
Maybe, but I don't think so. It wasn't that hairy at all, had larger fangs, and was a different color. Mine was black with orange stripes. Very minimal brown.
I did want to say I am going to search Google Images for Carolina Wolf Spider, to see if any pop up that look like mine. :)
Please bear in mind that spiders, like humans, can exhibit considerable individual variation in appearance.
I agree that it looks like a Carolina Wolf spider. They are huge--not notably hairy. I live in NC and frequently encounter them in my garden. I have never found one in my house, but I love them.
