Question on bulbs

Wentworth, SD(Zone 4a)

I found some bulbs today at Menards. They had 50 tulips or 35 hyacinth for 3.99 or 3.49. They also had some daffodils. I didn't buy any because, I didn't know how long they could be stored. We have snow on the ground here and I wouldn't be able to get them in the ground. Any ideas?

You can still plant them as long as the ground isn't frozen and you can get them in. Otherwise...you might try storing them like they do in the south, in the fridge but I wouldn't recommend it.
I'd plant them if you can stand it out in the cold long enough to get them in the ground. :)

hi there

provided the ground isnt rock hard I would get them in.

This time of year is a bit late as they need to grow roots before the really cold weather comes. if they cant do this they may not flower the best but will recover for the following year.

or what about planting them in large pots in multipurpose compost.

when planting them remember they need to be 3 times their own height deep.

Thanks! I did have a thought about potting them up. That is a really good idea. Would you put them out so that they could have the cold to bloom then?

hi Mick

Daffs need the cold and then the gradual warming to make them bloom at the right time.

just stick the pot out in the open somewhere. remember they need to be 6 inches or more deep so get a suitable pot.

all the best

Mark
