Rocks? excreted Seed Pods? Or what? - 2nd photo - detailed

And here's a closer look at what's left behind at the base of my lilacs

These appear to be the empty remains of the pips of a small stone fruit such as chokecherries, sand cherries, pin cherries, etc. whose inner kernels have been eaten by small rodents.

I might start to research whether cherries would be a tasty treat for rabbits - and whether they're likely to strip the base of my lilacs where these were left behind.

I also now need to find out how to protect my lilacs from further damage. Any ideas? Perhaps tree wrap like I see on new plantings?

Thanks for your comments.

I suspect that small rodents, such as voles may be responsible for the bark damage. About the only control method likely to work is use of a physical barrier around the trunks, such as a wire sleeve; they probably would gnaw right through tree wrap.
