Found this gizmo eating the surface layer on a eucalypt. I tried to get a look underneath but it fell off into long grass and I couldn't find it again. Anyone know what it is?
Whatever this is, its having a bad hair day
I believe that this is a larva of a tortoise beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae; subfamily Cassidinae). Larvae of several species camouflage themselves with their own fecal material, sometimes in very intricate patterns - see http://tinyurl.com/cz8o84 for another example. However, I cannot identify this particular species.
