Just received my dormant lily, it's so rare I'm afraid to do something wrong...anyone with a specimen, please help me....it came in a 24 oz container from Plant Delights...what type of soil should I use it's going into a container because we rent and there are gophers and voles in our area...this lily was thought extinct in the 90's but a Texas bulb guru got a specimen (quote from the plant ad) and now I have one! I'd never paid $20.00 for a single bulb before so am sweating over it's care...I welcome advice from anyone that has one of these little lovelies! I can't attach an image until summer (assuming I've done everything right)
Mexican Native Eucharis Leaf Spider Lily
But I do grow a close relative, Hymenocallis narcissiflora (Peruvian Daffodil), and must dig it every fall since it gets too cold here. It is an easy plant in regular garden soil. I plant bulbs 6 inches deep (from the soil surface to the bottom of the bulb) in full sun. But I see from the Plant Delights blurb that this one likes light shade. And I am thinking since mine grows 2-3ft flower stalks and your Hymenocallis eucharidifolia only 1 ft, I am guessing the bulb should be a bit more shallow. I would plant as it is in the pot you received, but 1 inch deeper. The bulb should find its correct depth on its own.
At least that's what I think.
Interesting species, BTW. I much prefer it over mine. I'd say your $20 is well spent.
Thanks for the reply....I have put it in a peat pot slightly larger than the one it came in and have my fingers crossed...once it pops it's head out, I'll just put the whole peat pot into a larger container....we live in a triplex with tarmack instead of dirt, so everything has to be in pots...sure hope it takes to that...I just thought it was stunning and not to large...if it works out when the time comes I'll ad it to my trades...and I won't charge 20.00....lol
