Hoping its not too late!

Highland, IL

You have all been so helpful! I did get my new violet food that you all suggested. I'm sure that may be part of the problem, but I think I have been making more than one problem for my plants, lucky they are still alive! Too large of pots, which I mentioned before after reading about when to repot. I also went through my AV leaves that I put down, the soil was still soaking wet, they do have roots so I added some soil to what was there tapped it around a bit and put them close to the light hoping they were dry up a bit. I believe this is the problem with the new streps as well. I just have to play with them every day. I think I was just loving them way to much!! All of the leaves on my streps and my two original AV's look great, so hopefully some day soon there will be actual blooms!!

Laura -

Does what you started your leaves in have drainage holes? If not, you may want to consider that. If it does, maybe consider putting the tray on top of a dishtowel . . . that would help leach some of th excess moisture from the mix . . .

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

I agree. You might also need to lighten up whatever your mix is with some perlite. If the pots are the right size and you have a mix that drains freely, nothing should ever feel "soaking wet".

Highland, IL

I don't have enough drainage for sure, but I do have them in the solo cups. I did not have any perlite in it! I will see how wet they still are in the morning, and add perlite. I got the perlite, vermiculite and moss after that. I did pull one of them out and it had roots on it, is that ok? The roots were at the bottom of a stem on the leaf, the others did have resistance like someone had me check before. So I assume they have roots as well.??? Geez, you think after reading everything I would have done it right huh?

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Do you have holes poked in the bottom of the Solo cups?

(tish) near Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

You can set the pots on newspaper or papertowels and it will draw out excess water.

lilypad.........that is what I do or go get an old towel and set the towel in a tray with pots sitting on it.

Highland, IL

I put the towels below a few of the pots to see how much it would absorb. I did poke the holes, I had about 5 or 6 in the bottom of each. I used a toothpick to make the holes. And had a wick going up through one of them, I just put way to much water on them I guess. Hopefully they will brighten up soon! LOLOL One of the AV's, Mandan Dandy was in too large of a pot so I took it out and put into a smaller pot that is a ceramic self watering pot, so I hopefully wont be able to screw that one up! Thank you all for your help, keep your fingers crossed!! Thanks again!! If you have any other suggestions, I will gladly give it a try.

I just take the scissors on the solo cups and snip a big gash on the bottom at an angle on both sides of the bottom of the solo pots so they can really drain well.

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

sometimes you just got to kill a few to figure out what works for you--and you will--just don't keep track of the numbers--LOL that what works for me!! Just remember we are gonna hook up in springfield soon and I have lots of stuff to fill in your empty spots if any croak ^_^

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Well, said HGran! And for some of us, it's more than a few....

Highland, IL

Yes, I must agree with Planti for sure! Or at least in my case!LOLOL

I , too, love to experiment and try to grow in different ways as there are so many different successful ways to grow any plant.

Highland, IL

I have a lot of experiments going this year!! I am giving coir and grow bags a try. I am also going to give potatoes in stray bales a shot. I have the space for a large garden, and have worked it for the past few years. The weeds and water grass have just driven me crazy, then the last straw was pulling weeds and I had the tiller right there, to till between the rows. I pulled out some weeds, and there was about 5 shiney baby eyes looking at me. It was a nest of baby rabbits! So, they got it, I'm such a softie!! LOL But they were too small to run out and if something got them in the woods ahhhh! You get the idea!!

Thanks again for the boost!!! Laura H

Rabbits go good with taters;)

Highland, IL

LOLOL!! Maybe if I didn't have to look at those beautiful brown eyes!! They were in the carrots!!!

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Gran!!! Columbus was highly offended by your taters remark! He says you need to eat your veges and keep away from his cousins!

I hear rabbit tastes just like chicken!

Laura - were you able to get a pick of the babies? Are they still there?

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

Rabbit does taste like chicken, but that hair gets between your teeth. I raised rabbits when I was a kid. I WILL NOT touch dead rabbit.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Must be the cannibus talking.....That's not what Columbus meant by veges!

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

Tell Columbus he has no worries from me-- rabbit is just too lean for my taste--can't stand that squeaky feeling when you bite it;) and once the grandkids figured out what "hoppin chicken" was they wouldn't eat it either.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Columbus is a cutie! The rest of you sound like you've been in the cannibus...LOL.
Lynn

Highland, IL

No I didn't get pic's of them, it was the year before last. HG, I have heard of "hoppin chicken", hummmmmm, wonder if someone got me on that too!!!

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

I usually get a nest of babies every year under at least one of my perennials. They are so darn cute I can't bear to hurt them,so I let them eat my flowers instead.....Oh,well,that's part of nature.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am like you, Lynn. This thread is making me cry! I get baby rabbits every year under the house which is pier and beam and I love them. Truly, if I ever had an accident like she was talking about in the garden, I wouldn't ever get over it..................

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

That's how I am,but many of my neighbors shoot them with pellet guns.I can't watch.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Why shoot them???? Why-Why-Why!!!!! Go to the grocery store if you are hungry! Leave the creatures be!!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I would call the police if I ever saw people shooting rabbits with pellet guns. If you want to hunt for food.........then kill something and eat it........but pellet guns were never intended to just injure......

I come from big hunting family but I never allowed my kids to even learn to use a gun...........

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

The awful part is they are city rabbits.Nobody eats them! Some throw them in bags in the trash and others leave them in the yard to be carried away by other creatures.I can't bear to look at them.It breaks my heart to find dead baby birds or anything in my yard.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

These are not children. They are men. Unfourtunately,it's not against the law.

Williston, ND

i love bunnies, and would never eat one or kill one (unless i was driving and it was him or me,

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Good for you Jim! It seems like a lot of guys around here hate them.

Highland, IL

Luckily for me nothing happened to the babies in the garden! I would still be a mess over it!! I agree, to hunt for food is fine, but the "thrill" is just stupid! Lets put those guys out, naked, cold and us gals will hunt them down with pellet guns!! LOLOLOL

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am so glad to hear that the bunnies didn't go under the tiller. I misunderstood you! ^_^

Williston, ND

some guys might like that,

LOL

JIM

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Oh Jim,some would love it! Even my DH and DS bought a pellet pistol and a slingshot with huge beebes to kill bunnys.I made it VERY clear that if they ever even tried to kill or wound an animal when I was around, there would be big trouble.I came from a hunting family, but everything that was killed was eaten, although not by by me.
Lynn

Highland, IL

Oh Gail, I'm sorry if I wrote it wrong!! I had not yet tilled that area, I was lucky that I pulled up that area!!!

I think the hole gun shooting thing must have something to do with the "man" is to bring home the food! (I can't type in a caveman voice)!!LOLOL

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I do understand as I come from a big big hunting family and, yes, they do eat what they kill. I just go to the grocery store^_^

Highland, IL

Me too, I do eat meat. I do the grocery store or meat market too. I would not choose to hunt for sure, just don't got the heart for it!! But no problems with those who do for food.

By the way, back to the orginal subject, I have killed a couple but my new sinn looks good, it had a bloom when I got it but was flat due to shipping, now the stem is still up on it, there are small buds on the stem, is that more flowers or seeds or just something weird happening to me? LOLOLOL

Williston, ND

they might not have died, but went dormant on you,
