What type of tree's and shrubs for color and texture?

Williamstown, NJ(Zone 6b)

I posted this question in Garden Design. But maybe I needed to post it here. I am going to show a couple of pics of an area, one in summer and one is winter. I want to plant trees and shrubs here that will give me some green all year long. The winter view is so drepressing.

Here is the winter pic of that area. See it is so drepressing to look at.

I want something up against this wooded area to give me the same feel. How and what do I plant to bring it together?
I have looked at dogwood, pear tree. But what kind of shrub will go well here?

One conifer I would definitely consider for that area would be one of the Canadian Hemlocks - Tsuga canadensis. There are numerous cultivars from which to choose that would would incorporate very well into a mixed border in your situation.

Definitely Conifers! Victor wrote an excellent article on Evergreens http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/356/ with some great suggestions. There are so many choices and the amazing variety of colors, available would really perk up your area. One of my all time favorites is Cryptomeria japonica 'Sekkan Sugi' http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/79380/. I love its graceful form and the bright gold tips on the foliage. I tried to find a picture to show you how it "shines" amongst the other Conifers in this bed - it's the one in the middle.

There are also wonderful blues - Picea pungens 'Fat Albert' http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/81123/ planted in the front here.

I don't have any good pictures of ours so I borrowed this one from PF - Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Lemon Thread' http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/79082/. We have it planted at the top of our driveway and when people see it from a distance in the early spring they think it's Forsythia in bloom the color is so bright!

A couple of other Chamaecyparis: C. thyoides 'Rubicon' http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/96605/ and C. thyoides 'Heatherbun' http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/127846/ have interesting winter color for variety, blue green through the summer and turning bronze during the winter.

Oh they are so nice. I have a couple of gold leaf ones now that I need to move. I might put them back there too.
