Another pair of the dark purple "seed" crocus - they were soooo pretty this year!
Spring peeking!
Thanks for the name - I'm sure I had it at one time but it's been ages. It's always amazing to me how many of the earlier spring flowers LOOK so delicate, but they stand up to all the vagaries of the weather at this time of year.
Love the goodies in your rock wall! Actually, some of my sedums are showing signs of life too, now that I think about it.
Holly - great that your Jacob's Ladder is coming back! I bought one of the cute little variegated ones some time ago, and before a month was out, some insect/bug/whatever had completely decimated it. Sigh...
Hope you have lots more blossoms/buds/greenery to see tomorrow!
What pretty, pretty blooms!!
Pretty shots and lots of color :) I haven't taken any photos since the last ones I posted but your Hellebores are so pretty I had to share this one. I was searching for an ID of Gita's double blooming Hellebore and got a little carried away :) I love the foliage of Helleborus foetidus even though the flowers aren't as pretty. When I was searching Pine Knot Farms' website, I found this beautiful H. foetidus 'Red Silver'. Emailed Judith and asked her if she would reserve three and bring them to the sale at Lewis Ginter for me. She wrote back and said she was shipping them because she was afraid my "order" might get lost in the shuffle between now and the first of May. They arrived the next day and I can't wait to get them planted!
And--here is one of my "other" ones--Rose Souvelons--I expect--gonna pop any day now. Such a small cutting! I am amazed that these cuttings are blooming! Perhaps it is because I have kept them under the lights????
There is a second one starting to form flower buds.....
Gita
edited to note that the R.S. Brug's flowers do not hanf straight down, but sit at a, sort of, 45 drgree angle. You can see that in the above picture...

Glad you like the photos, Chantell & Debbie! Nothing fragrant yet, Chantelle, but when my "Geranium" & "Erlicheer" daffs open, it will be great. I also am seeing some action in a small bed of hyacinths.
Debbie, That hellebore is really gorgeous - LOVE the silvery leaves and the blooms too. Is Pine Knot Farms usually at Green Springs too, up by the house? I know there's a hellebore specialist there every year... I'd love to get a double one of these years, without breaking the bank. I saw my first one ("Heronswood", I think) at Philadelphia a few years ago and was smitten. I usually prefer single flowers on most plants, but the double hellebores are very pretty.
I look forward to seeing you at Lewis Ginter, as well as Green Springs... will you be at Blandy too?
It's raining here today, so not much chance to take spring blossom photos. Hopefully when it's all over, there will be some new faces in the garden. ;-)
Barb
Ok..I simply can't resist...is it just me or Debbie do those leaves resemble an illegal plant?
Gita - LOVE those Bruggies!! I would think the lights have much to do with it...mine have stayed in a semi-dormant state....a leaf here and there.
LOL Chantell, well...yes they do but even though their common name is Stinking Hellebore, they don't "stink" as bad!
Oooh, Shirley you got some beauties! Looks like the two on the left and right (11:00 and 4:00) are the type known as Cobweb or Spider Web Hens and Chicks http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/53928/. I love the one in the back with the red tips!
LOL
Nice haul at the pottery...many of those "look" hardy - the ones with the very thick "petals" tend to be tender but those look like they'd be fine in the ground. What do you think, Debbie?
I'm not sure, I did a quick scroll through Sempervivum and Jovibarba to look for an ID and some of them that look like that particular one say Zone 3, some Zone 8-9 and others don't even have a hardiness listed. Drat, was hoping I could help! Shirley, you might want to post a pic of that one on the Plant ID forum and see if anyone can give you a positive ID. That way you'd know for sure if it was hardy or not :)
Barb, I ordered a few of those double Helles from one of the DG Co-op. I ordered 2 Golden Lotus http://www.terranovanurseries.com/wholesale/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=457
and 2 Peppermint Ice http://www.terranovanurseries.com/wholesale/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=519
Would have ordered more but just got in on the end of the Co-op and got to take advantage of the left overs.
rcn, Love that Helle. I was reading that you can start them from cuttings?
Gita, That Brug is just beautiful.
Wyldeflwr, Those are very pretty I think the sedum/semps groups are getting very popular I brought some home from the Philadelphia flower show.
Holly - how pretty!! Sadly I don't believe those are hardy though. Sure make for pretty and easy houseplants though!!!
Holly, you'll love 'Golden Lotus', it's beautiful and I especially like it because the flowers look "up" at you instead of "down". If you're lucky, you'll get one of the few that has the red edges on the double yellow flowers :)
Barb, sorry...yes, we'll be at Blandy as well as LG and GS :) We were really disappointed - last year when we traveled to the trade show in Greensboro in January one of the suppliers from Oregon had the most beautiful 'Heronswood' Hellebores in their booth. We could have kicked ourselves when we found out that they were giving them away free at the end of the show! This year we made sure to make that booth our first stop and put our name on a few but they didn't have any with them this year :(
Holly - thanks for the info on those nurseries. I will check them out.
I really need to check the co-op forum more regularly!
Love your little pots too.
Gita - that 'Rose Souvelons' is a beautiful color - love the way it doesn't totally droop down like most brugs.
Wyldeflwr - great stuff at the pottery. I'll be down in Williamsburg the first weekend in April. Now I have a mission while DH goes to an Antique Gun show! Heh, heh, heh.
Chantell, I'm hoping to have a nice display of them in the living-room once the green house is done and I move the tropicals out there. I was thinking. I would be nice not to have so many plants out here but I could put together a nice group of succulents. Talking about not so many plants in the living room. Take a look at my Orchids. I have 4 of them blooming right now. One is a re-bloomer, Ric gave it to me last year and it bloomed for me again this year. The big one with the tiny yellow flowers I got from my HGHA raffle table $2 worth of raffle tickets it had a stem that looked like it might bloom when I got it 3 weeks ago and I have had such a great time watching it slowly go thru the blooming process. The smaller one in the very back was a Vday present from Ric, still blooming with more flower buds coming.
Debbie - OMG - they were GIVING them away???? I feel your pain. Oh well. My usual plan is to wait until any new introduction is not so "special"/scarce anymore and the price comes down a bit. I'm good at waiting. ;-)
I will be seeing you and Rick then for sure at all 3 shows. We made Blandy the first stop on our Mother's Day outing with Son & DIL last year, then headed over to a winery for a picnic and wine-tasting. They really enjoyed both, so it has now become an annual tradition.
Holly - very nice....any scent (my typical question)
Picnic and wine tasting...now THAT'S the way to spend the day
Holly---
Have you ever really LOOKED CLOSE at the blooms of that yellow Orchid?
The blooms look just like a little Dutch girl in a full skirt and a cap....I believe that one is called the "Oncidium" Orchid.....
daylily--
The Rose Souvelons has never grown huge--and it has at least 3 bloom cycles during our hot summers....Once I took a night shot of the blooms--and it really shows the puffiness of the blooms....
Chantell, Yeah, we sort of enjoyed it too! ;-) Actually, that tradition began many years ago, when I was trying to figure out some way to celebrate with both Mom & MIL, and still enjoy MYSELF!!! Invited them to come up to Northern VA (both lived in Richmond), and spend the weekend. I don't enjoy going to restaurants on Mother's Day - too crowded, long waits, stressed waitstaff, not fun at all, so we went to 2 wineries out Route 66, and brought a picnic along. It was an immediate hit. Dear (now departed) MIL asked a few months later, say in August or September, "That was fun, could we do it again next year?" Too funny. And so it became a tradition.
Gita,
Thanks for that info - I do believe I will add that to my list! I always love a "night garden" with lots of white and scented plants.
Nice to think about such things on a cold, dark and rainy day...
LOVE my night garden plants....can just sit on the step (swatting the bugs) and breathe deeply - even with things a simply as the old cheap purple petunias and the Nicotiana....mercy add Tuberose to that mix and it's simply intoxicating!!! Folks talk about the moon flowers..I've yet to have a bloom but "they" say it's wonderful. And should you want looks plus scent - a night blooming epi with her HUGE blooms...yeah...that'll do it!!!
holly- thatlower left silvery plant/ succulent- that looks like one I have which will only be marginally hardy for you. I did have a piece live one winter, totally southern smakc up against the house and leaves around it.
DaylilyDiva- your SlimWhitman looks just like my Ice Follies LOL
Sorry Chantell no smell from any of them as far as I can tell.
Gita I did notice that. They are such really pretty flowers. I really have to thank Ric for my Orchids, I had wanted them for years but wouldn't buy any as I thought I didn't have the right growing conditions or didn't know enough to keep them going. Then Ric came home last year with one for Vday and told me that they don't cost any more than if he had bought me fresh flowers and would last a lot longer.
Amen! Give me a "potted" plant any ole day over a doz roses.
Holly--Believe it or not--HD always has Orchids in their garden dept.....At least ours does--but of course--our HD being one of the OLDER ones--still has a greenhouse....
All the new ones just have plants inside--somewhere--NO light...NO humidity--NOT easy to water, as they are all on the sales floor.....
There are ONLY 4 HD in Baltimore that have Greenhouses....Glen Burnie--(Store #2501)--White Marsh--(#2502)--Catonsville--(#2503) and Towson.....(#2504)......See?
And--BTW--They are lowering their prices somewhat on many plants and things---kind of dealing with all the financial situation. They should have never marked them up like they did! No one is much buying them!
When I was in the Greenhouse--a 10" black pot house plant was just about $8. Now they are/were $12.97. And--have now been lowered to $9.99.
6" Orchids used to be $12.97-----------Now they are $19.97. and so on.....
G.
