Who are your garden helpers?

Delaware, OH

i heard of some bears out in durango colorado area where we spend time that were sitting on the furniture on a porch! seems comfy and right at home!

(Judi)Portland, OR

I took my Koka to the beach last weekend - she loved it. She's an American Indian dog from Song Dog Kennels. She has a definite coyote look and is the sweetest dog and way smarter than me. Sofer - have you heard of this kennel and if so what do you think?

Koka likes to follow me around the garden and just keeps me company. She did drag a few dogwood branches around but soon tired of that!

Pix so glad your cat came home.

Koka

She is the prettiest color! Really, in all a very, very attractive animal! I looked at the photos you have of her on another thread and she really has the most intelligent looking face! I have never heard of this kind of dog before, but I can clearly see the attraction. Looks like she is having a terrific time at the beach.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Judi, do you think this was her first time at the beach? I think it's Heaven for most dogs. Mine get positively silly chasing eachother and birds and waves and smelling all the lovely stinky things . . .

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Looks like Koka had a great time! She really is a beauty.

My dogs have always loved the beach too... so many smells that are new and different! So many yucky treasures to bring back to Mom....

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Looks like a sucessful trip to the beach. Joyous!

(Judi)Portland, OR

I have no idea of she had ever been to the beach before. She usually obeys every little request I have but when I tried to leave the beach she laid down and wouldn't look me at my face. She loved it! Her eyes are very yellow and sometimes that scares people! Now if I can teach her to pull weeds...

Boy, you got to admit that Daves is an animal freindly website. Hehe. Here is my current helper and one that has since left us.

I couldn't find the pic of Maggie. Oh well, she was a good ole girl. A chocolate lab that we had for 16 years.

(Judi)Portland, OR

Gourd I had two goldens (at 2 different times) that I got as puppies and they lived for 18 years. It's very difficult, but they had great lives, as I'm sure Maggie did. What is the name of the one in the photo? So cute!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

His name is William Wallace but we usually just call him Wallace or ummm... fuzzy butt. Heheh
Here is a close up of his cute face

OK.. He could rival Tim for DG mascot... (Tim is a chicken from another thread)

OMG - he's so cute. And I love his name. What breed(s) is he?

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

What a cute helper Gourdbeader! He looks like he is smiling for the camera!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

He is a mix of chow and terrier I believe. when my scottie died about 8 years ago, I was undergoing treatment for Hep c. Much like chemo I was deathly ill from treatment. It was Christmas eve and my scottie, Gandolf, had a brain anuerism and had to be put to sleep. I was extremly depressed and sick to boot. Wallace got chased under our neighbors house by two big dogs. He was only about 8 weeks old. My neighbor could hear him crying but couldn't coax him out. It took me two days of talking and I finally put up a trap that would catch him when he came out to eat. I picked him up and he preceeded to poop all over me. It was love at first sight. He looked like a golden retriever puppy but he is far from a golden retriever. He is never the less my little Brave Heart so the name, William Wallace. He truely stepped in to ease the void left behind from my Gandolf. He is my really and truely soulmate, next to my DH.

Gourdbeader - what an incredible story. It brings tears to my eyes. I have no doubt (as don't you) that he was sent to you to get you through that. And the name William Wallace makes sense to me now. He looks like he's equal parts protective and goofy. I like that.

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Gourdbearer... isn't it incredible to have a furry friend show up out of the blue just when you need them the most? Your story hits close to home, and made me smile. My Bonnie showed up out of the blue when my heart really needed her...a puppy that wasn't even weaned who would be left to die if I didn't take her. She will be turning 10 tomorrow.

I am truely saddened that I will very likely be losing one of my "children" this spring. My Lexy is over 15, and in the last week and a half her health has been deteriorating drastically. She is the very best fur baby I have ever had the joy of knowing, and I don't know how I will ever replace her. She was another "gift" dog, but in this instance I think that it was her that needed me rather than vice versa. She was my brother's dog, who lives on adjacent property, and one day she decided that she would rather be my dog instead. Not that she doesn't love my brother's family still...she greets them happily every time they visit...she just wanted to live with me and spend time playing in the garden with me. I think that my Brother's family just didn't spend enough time outside for her taste. We have been together ever since.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, we have been blessed with the gift of love and compassion. You never know where its going to come from or where its going to be needed. Its hard to believe that there are people in the world that would abuse these wonderful gifts of love. Just like all of us at Dave's, we share love, compassion, and understanding, its only right that our furry friends are a big part of Dave's Garden family.
Thanks for being here Dave
Jan

William Wallace is adorable! And that is a very cool story about how he found you. Our Fran is getting older, too, and it makes me cry just to think of it.

I just looked outside to let the dogs in and will somebody please help me understand why on April 1, it is snowing mixed with rain???????

Because the PNW knows you want to plant....

Ginger

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Yep, that the PNW for ya. I have my spade in hand and a box full of bulbs but where is the sunshine? I think that some one needs to let ole Mother nature know its spring. Whats the first thing my sweet hubby says this morning, the one good thing about the first of April is that April showers bring May flowers. I could have gone all day without hearing that little bit of information. heheh

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

"Highs will be in the upper 40's to lower 50's and westerly winds will pick up to 15-25 mph...gusting as high as 35 mph. We will see a slight chance of scattered snow showers tonight as lows dip into the mid 20's and westerly winds stay very gusty.

Have a Sparkling Day in Central Oregon!

Hey beadmom, do you do beading? I bead gourds. Here is a pic of one that I did. I used to live in Bend. I taught some community colleges classes on papermaking and block printing.

WOW... That is some elephant. What size beads are those? 14? Bekieve it or not somewhere around here I have some 22's.

I used to bead a lot until I took this life consuming job supposedly for 3 days helping a friend.... out 3 years ago...before that I was a glassblower for 30 years. The last 15 making beads.

This is a very old website that has some of the stuff I've done. There are no auctions anymore and the kids are all grown and have their own kids... but the beadwork album and the lampwork bead galleries are still good.

Ginger

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

They are 13/0 mostly. This gourd was featured in Bead and Button magazine in their feb 2007 issue.

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

It should have been. It's spectacular!

I was featured once in Beadwork Mag.

Hi everybody I have been in remote AK and had no internet for the last 3 weeks. So couldn't see Dave's.
Portland I have not heard of the kennel you got Koda from. But the scene on the beach makes me almost cry remembering my long isolated jaunts with my past Jack Russell along the beaches of Vancouver Island. My Sophie ran and ran along the beaches chasing sea lions, seagulls, and collecting dead carcasses of many animals washed up on the beach. One day she over a 2 hour effort dragged a sea lion skeleton which I stayed for 3 more days to keep her happy chewing it up.

My garden helpers! They mow the grass, eat the chick weed and turn my lasagna bed. The worms are staying deep in the pile. ;) I have to keep an eye on them, there are certain areas that are off limits, but so far they have not eaten anything but a wild daisey.

The lasagna bed is layered with the droppings of 14 rabbits, and the litter from the coup floor, along with the grass clippings, etc. Over the winter they have turned it into a fine compost for me. I love these ladies!

Love all the chickens.

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

OK, you guys have to stop with the chicken pictures...at least until the adorable chicks are no longer in the feed stores! Every time I see them I have to spend a whole bunch of time reminding myself why I shouldn't have chickens! Dogs, coyotes, cougar, unfenced garden area.... not a good home for chickens...but I so want them!!!

Spent some time pruning roses when the yuck let up this afternoon, and no matter what her physical condition is, miss Lexy had to guard Momma. She spend time hanging in the dry spot underneath the pieris while Mom pruned in the rain.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Your Miss Lexy looks like a great ole gal. How old is she. You can see the gray in her muzzle. She is a real sweetie pie.

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

I am not sure exactly how old Lex is, but I am guessing around 16 or so. She came to my brother as a "used" dog in '95 with no official records, and adopted me a couple of years later. It is tearing me up to watch her decline, but she still prances around like a pup when she knows that I will be spending time outside with her.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Sorry Julie. My members of pick and roll.

Lex is fortunate to have you to take care of her! My youngest son has just handed off his 15+ year old kitty. She is just bones and fur, so he could not stand watching her waste away, and just doesn't have the heart to put her down. So I am running the kitty nursing home. ;)

Soferdig, is that a barred rock or dominiquer? Also, are those golden wyandottes? I love them!

I love the chicken photos! And the beadwork! That is some elephant, Gourdbeader. And I love the beaded pouches Beadmom made. What talent we have on this website!
Neofarmer, welcome back!

Gourdbeader, your dh is very lucky he still lives to be cheerful about the weather. What kind of a person makes a comment about May flowers when it's snowing outside at the beginning of April in the 'MILD' PNW??? Man, you must really love him! LOL Even my DH knows better than to say stuff like that.
