2009 Spring pic's

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

We've got just about everything sowed, planted etc these past weeks. These pictures were taken Saturday and you would not believe the growth since then. All of these are in MG mix, sprayed with messenger with 8-8-8 fertilizer except of course the corn and the herbs.

48 stalks of corn
2 pole beans
2 peas
4 bush beans
two EB's of radishes

I'll be there for lunch..LOL

Araness: Do you use the drops on the seeds or do you buy the packets and then put it in the reservoir? (I hope TPlant doesn't read this, he will kill me, as he never puts anything in the reservoir).
Only 4 cukes? I got 75 of those babies, I want to make pickles and about 70 of them are pickling kind. LOL I don't feel so bad now about the amount of tomatoes I'm growing now, thing is araness, I'll be lucky if 5 survive my care the way I'm going. Tell me more about this messenger stuff.

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

We have an industrial sprayer and I use it as a foliar. Only thing I ever put in the reservoir is a bit of lime mixed with water if needed. We will have a total of 8 cukes but I'm staggering them as they are some of the first things to throw in the towel in my heat and humidity. I've used the puffer for the seeds and didn't see a difference in germination so stopped. Also have some of the Mighty Plant fertilizer but haven't used that enough with enough consistency to be able to give a valid opinion on it. Since we aren't to have rain for several more days I will spray today with my Ortho (bug b' gone & disease control)

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

OMG no, we've give Joy another product to look at, hahahaha! Not in the reservoir Joy, Messenger is generally only used as a foliar spray, as Araness just said, and most of us stocked up on the recent Messenger Coop that is over now and done with.

Araness,
GIRL, You are WORKING that Picasa Program!!!!! Great pictorial layout!

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

lol that's photoshop. I spend hours on Second Life (online kinda sorta game) and one of the main things I like to do is photo's and photo editing. Taking me a bit of time but I'm getting the hang of it.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Well, then, try the Picasa! It's easy and does the same thing (obviously!)

P.S. Did you start all your veggies from seeds? If not, it might not be too late for me to get some seedlings any hurry them into my EBs.

I'm just now starting to harvest the cole crops from my November seed sowing ( I was late, but it's still working). I have purple top turnips, Nantes half carrots, Flashy's Trout lettuce, and Bull's Blood and Chioggia beets that are just starting to mature. I'll start pulling some of them out this weekend.

Not sure how to save them short of peeling, quick blanching and freezer bags. Storage/Preserving suggestions would be much appreciated.

I know what to do with the "greens," and I can pickle the beets. They'll last forever as long as they're covered with the vinegar and oil!

Thanks,

Linda

Yummy pickled beets. I'm doing that this year too.

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

I started the seedling in Jan, and these have been in the EB's for several weeks. LOL I don't think the DH would be thrilled if I didn't use the PS program he paid a small fortune for.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

oops....!

Crestview, FL

Gymgirl and Devota: I'm going to kidnap both of you, bring you here to Florida and watch you pickle some beets, I love pickled eggs on Easter. LOL
joy

Ames, NE(Zone 5b)

Joy that is a federal offense..Especially if it is premeditated ..LOL
Temporary insanity would apply either .LOL

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Joy pickled beets are real easy to make...I'll help you with a recipe if you want to try them.

Johnson City, TN(Zone 6b)

darkmoondreamer, you are a kind and lovely person.

Crestview, FL

darkmoondreamer: Yes, please, that sounds lovely.

Tubby: Ah, I'd just look at the FBI and tell em "I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every moment of it". They wouldn't know what to do with that one anymore than a psychiatrist would know what to do with someone who answers their "Have you ever felt suicidal" with "No, homicidal, maybe".

Devota.......bless your heart...really...I needed that exactly when you said it. Thank you so much dear.....

Joy pickled beets and eggs truly are easy to make, glad to help you. I love to can. My mom loves pickled beets and last year when she went to the nursing home I made 30 jars for my big sis to give her occasionally to go with her meals so she'd feel like she had something special.

Do you know how to can? Maybe I can find a way for some of us gals to get together and discuss canning our goodies this summer ☺

Lake Elsinore, CA

I don't know how to can... boo hoo! But I've got an industrial strength canner and I am afraid of it. It looks like a menacing.... I don't know what. With all those screw down things and scary instructions. Of course, I run and hide when my husband uses the little pressure cooker. What was I thinking? Oh, I know, I thought I was a pioneer woman or something. hehe

Ok, Karen, that's it, you have to come here and show me the what for when it comes to canning. It's lonely here when everyone around you thinks meat is born in saran wrapped packages and don't even know their french fries were once potatoes in the ground.

:)

Lake Elsinore, CA

Oh, the water bath I can do. It's the big monster pressure canner that makes me cringe.

Ames, NE(Zone 5b)

Pugzley like a Back to the Future contraption ..LOL

Lake Elsinore, CA

LOL! It is!

Lake Elsinore, CA

araness, your plants are da bomb! Looking so beautiful and healthy, you got lots to be proud of already this season. I can't wait to see pictures of your harvests. :)

Crestview, FL

Yes, I could use instruction, give me the heads up when we can discuss this ok? I bought a Ball's beginner canning kit, (since I'm a beginner right?), and have the Ball canning recipe book; but I do pickle eggs, got a great recipe for that one; but, not making my own pickled beats, don't need the pressure cooker type do I?
joy

Johnson City, TN(Zone 6b)

Joy.....A word of advice, dear. Don't use the pressure canner until you definately know what you are doing. We'd like to keep you around awhile. A mistake with one of those babies is a lot worse than a few dead tomatoes.

Crestview, FL

Devota: Would probably end like my trying to connect an electric wire from an adapter box I dropped once. When I plugged the box in after twisting what wires I thought went where the room filled with smoke. LOL Right now, I'm just into beginning stuff, just the basic canner, that's all I need for pickles right? Can I use the basic canner for beets?
joy

Lake Elsinore, CA

Joy, you can make pickled beets in the hot water bath canner, you do not need the pressure canner for the pickled beets. If they are not pickled you do need the pressure canner for that.

Here's a website I trust with a pictorial on how to make the pickled beets. Hope this helps.

Pugsley: Thanks will have to get a handle on that before easter, I love pickled eggs, got just the right jar for it too. LOL
joy

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Joy I'd love your recipe for pickled eggs please....I wish I could find a good one for pickled hot sausage like they sell in the store.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

How does one eat a pickled egg? I've seen them off and on, just never tried one before. Does it just taste like a pickley boiled egg? Sprinkle some salt and pepper on it?

My other nickname is "Mikey..." Some of you will get it....

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL @ "Mikey"! Yes, it is a hard boiled egg that is then pickled in vinegar, eaten with salt and pepper. Yummy!

Johnson City, TN(Zone 6b)

Not just vinegar, sugar and spice and some beets for the color. yum yum.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Thank you for being kind, Dreamer. I see you got it.

Johnson City, TN(Zone 6b)

What? will eat anything?
