Saw this little white blob moving around in the grass. It is about as long as a match head and didn't like to stay still for long. I've never seen anything like it except for a prawn/shrimp! Any one know what it is?
CLOSED: What the heck is this, a land prawn with a wooly backpack!
This is a larva of a lacewing (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae). See http://tinyurl.com/aue2cu for images of a similar species. In some areas, such larvae that camouflage themselves with bits of debris are called 'trash bugs.' These insects are voracious predators on other small arthropods.
Thanks suunto, what a strange little critter. There are lots of green lacewings around here so now I'll know them next time I see one.
