☞ We NEED a CLEM sticky!!! ☜

Bartlett, TN(Zone 7b)

Don't you guys agree???
Especially for newer clematis lovers and people who really want to learn about them. Give them a "starting point" you know.

I think we need a sticky referring to:

✔ Sun Clematis' varieties
✔ Shade Clematis' varieties
✔ Large Flower Clematis varieties
✔ ANYWHERE Clematis' varieties - including north walls, deep shade, etc.
✔ Planting information - depth, compost ingredients, bone meal, watering, etc.
✔ Detailed ✂ PRUNING information - A, B, C groups or I, II, III groups whichever. ie - when to prune, where to prune, maybe pictorials for better visual??
✔ Places to buy "good", "reliable" clems from. Someone the Garden Watchdog keeps up with so people can check.

I don't know, just seems kinda frustrating to have to dig thru pages & pages of info you know. Again, especially for newer people who are seriously interested in growing clems.
With all of our information combined, we have A LOT OF INFORMATION to share!

I don't know how or who goes about doing it, but I really think it's time for a "Clematis Sticky".
Who's with me?

Sounds like a great idea.

I think Linda Beutler's books (timber press) have info sorted out clem info in a very user friendly way. check her out as a resource.

also Mary Toomey's pocket guide to clematis is a small treasure of a resource.

Bartlett, TN(Zone 7b)

36 views and only Sarah thinks it's a good idea?
wow, guess everyone already knows everything! lol

Hammond, LA(Zone 8b)

I think it's a good idea. I think every plant specific forum should have one.

Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I know I had to do a lot of research on my own last year when I purchased my first clematises. In fact, I joined the Clematis Society so I could get access to their vendor list and website. It would have been very helpful to me to have had a sticky to read with lots of information in one place.

2racingboys...Guilty as charged. I viewed but didn't post. I agree it would be great to have all the basic info and/or links in one place. I've spent considerable time researching in DG since starting clems....sometimes I find the answer, sometimes I give up searching. Which led to me purchasing three books.

The Timber Press Pocket Guide recommended by ClematisGuru is great, as is Success With Clematis by Marigold Badcock. (her name is Marigold and she writes about Clematis???)

Along with Clematis and Climbers/Simple Steps To Success by David Gardener. (You must have to have a gardening related name to write a flower book...LOL)

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Honestly, I think ALL the Forums under Specific Kinds of Plants: should have a sticky containing just such material.

Important links and information germane to that plant the forum is about. Of course, each one would have different break-downs. Nothing fluff or superfluous ......

Someplace that will QUICKLY be found and point one to the most important of info.

Posting only definitive links without a lot of chit chat getting in the way .... not that I don't like chit chat, but it makes it tough to glean the info. that is most important.

Just my two seeds worth ........

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Part of the problem is finding someone who has the time to write it!

Bartlett, TN(Zone 7b)

now that's more like it! YEE---HAWWW lol
I agree that every "specific" plant needs a sticky and Shirley, you are right ... finding someone to do it or more so - who has the time is a little tricky but maybe we can come up with something. I just know that digging thru pages & pages get a little old & frustrating and I always find good ol GOOGLE to be more helpful. That shouldn't be the case.

Maybe in the near future we can get something figured out.
I definitely think Clematis deserves to have it's own STICKY!

I think a sticky would be great for quick reference. I grow some clematis and it sure would be helpful to me.

Athens, PA

Kristy - I am guilty too of looking and not posting. And I do agree with you. - there should be a sticky on this forum and the others as well. I forget which year to stop pruning back the type 2's and the type 1's and have to look it up each time - it would be easier to have that information posted at the top of the forum.

Sounds like a great idea...... :)

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

I'm new to Clematis and I would love to have a starting point for basic Clematis selection and care.

Vicksburg, MS(Zone 8a)

I agree too. I love clematis and started collecting just 3 or 4 years ago. I'll "donate" my best bookmarked site to the cause:

http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/1000/1247.html

Maybe if we each donate a site or some useful info we've found, we can just put it all together for our sticky :-}

Bartlett, TN(Zone 7b)

That's kind of what I was thinking....
Since no one really has time or "knows it all" if we combine all our info into one, we will have our own one page reference.

I don't think it should be for sales or advertising obviously, but links to sites that have extensive details and info we all need to get our fingers on from time to time, easily. Like this one for some part shade & north wall clematis .... (I know Chalk Hill is closed, but the info is still really handy)

And SilverStar has easy to understand info ...

Kristy:

Awesome start!!

I think your best bet in getting a sticky on any forum is to collect as many germane links as you can find, organize it thoughtfully, with descriptive headings in bold, then create a thread with it, and rules that it is not a chat thread. You're almost done, from the looks of it .....

Then, alert the admins that the "clem group" (for instance) would like that links thread to become a sticky.

Maybe ask people to send to you the links and you can edit the post, or let them add to the thread one post which they can edit if they find new links. No more than one post per person.

Here is a good example of exactly what I mean from the Northeast forum, started by Anita, for useful links:

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/819002/

Certainly a GREAT start!!

this will probably be helpful and clem newbies can get a lot of questions answered more easily.

Seconding the motion and bumping....

Baton Rouge, LA

As a clem newbie, I agree... a sticky would be extremely helpful! Ev =)

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I'm an experienced gardener, but still learning new info. regarding gardening everyday. I second the motion for sticky for helpful info. on clematis.

Northwest, MO(Zone 5a)

Yes, Sticky please

Starkville, MS

I hate to appear stupid (but will use my 77 years as an excuse)----but, what is a sticky? I assume that it gives in depth info on something----right? I have gardened for years----but have had very little success with clematis-------I understand that some need to be pruned and it is dangerous to prune others. How do you know? Or do you have to be told this fact when you buy it? For the first time in 20 years I have one blooming now----but it is on a paniculata plant----and I wanted it to climb a pine tree!

Thanks for any advice[

Sticky means a post that stays at the top and doesn't move so people will always see it and be able to access it..since Dave's doesn't have the "Sticky" capabilities here on postings people keep posting on this post so it keeps moving to the top
Pruning clematis is easy...hard pruning is done to pruning group 3's because they bloom on the new vines that grow during the growing season...BUT..it's very important to hard prune group 2's after the first year planted because Clematis are the 1st year they sleep,2nd year they creep and 3'rd year they LEAP plants..so Hard pruning the next year after they are planted forces the newbie plant to focus on growing a stronger root system instead of vining..remember that pruning group 2's bloom on the vines grown in previous season..aka old wood...it's just that simple..remember your clematis likes its roots to stay moist...THIS IS IMPERATIVE for a clematis to flourish, thrive and bloom in your gardens..secondly applying either rose or tomato fertilizer in early spring BEFORE it sets flowerbuds revs up your clematis to bloom..the fertilizer must have a higher middle number than the others..jeanne

You should be able to grow them in 7b shirleyd. You just have to get them plenty of water, and they like their feet cool. My Henryi from last summer

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I forgot, Kristy to obtain a sticky for the thread, all we have to do is write to DG and ask for one. lol. Since you're the pioneer on this terrific idea, would you kindly write to Dave?
Thanks,
Kim

Northeast, IL(Zone 5b)

Oooooh, that link to the article on starting cuttings is exactly what I came looking for! I have three recently pruned segments from a Jackmanii that I want to root. Thanks!

Delaware, OH

irwells, that is a beautiful clem, but is not an henryii. it may be a marie boiselotte, or ???. henryii has darker anthers, usually opening dark burgundy and then looking brownish up close after timein the sun.
but very nice looking indeed.

Thomasville, GA(Zone 8a)

I think it would be a great idea because I have purchase 4 clematis and until I read some of the information above I did not know that there were shade and sun clematis. I agree we need a sticky. Elaine

Delaware, OH

the rose forum starts with a sticky so i am sure DG will do it

Baton Rouge, LA

Yep, and a sticky was just added to the Cacti and Succulents forum this year after we asked for one. =)

Janet

glad we have this sticky.

Athens, PA

No, it's a kidney stone, isn't it?

(Lynn) Paris, TX(Zone 7b)

ClematisGuru, as I recall I bought this online, so no telling which clematis it is. I didn't pay much for it, though, so I imagine it's a common one.

Delaware, OH

irwells it is a beautiful clem. prettier than henryiii n my thoughts. enjoy it. doesn't matter which one it is!
here is the same one from last year in my garden. i couldn't believe how big the blooms are as the plant gets older. how old is yours?

ClematisGuru....what is the silver heart shaped vine growing beside your clematis?

It is a beauty.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

I'm a Clem newbie and I think it's a great idea. Where would I go to purchase Clems that bloom spring - fall in zone 8a?? Thanks!!!

Baton Rouge, LA

Here's another reference for the sticky. It's an article by the Chicago Botanic Garden titled "Clematis for Northern Landscapes" and it's chalk full of GREAT info. I just wish the info could be applied where I live! =P There's a performance comparison, lots of good photos, cultivation info, etc... all geared specifically to northern landscapes. Ev

YES PLEASE for a clemmie sticky. It would be so great to have important info at the top instead of having to search this Forum.
