Birds of Brazos Bend

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't know how Chris was able to limit the number of photos posted from this park. I guess if I had a handful that were really stellar or unusual like Chris', I would just post those. As it is, I don't have anything spectacular, but I do love these birds.

White Ibis were everywhere. I've never seen so many. I like this one because he still has a bit of brown on his head.

Blue-winged Teals. I saw Green-winged ones too but didn't get a good photos of them.

Hermit Thrush I think.

Alligators and Black Vultures. Black Vultures were everywhere too. I counted 43 in a stand of trees alone.

I'm looking over the bank at some Black-bellied Whistling Ducks and a White Ibis.

The headless thing on the left is a Common Moorhen preening after a bath. Then there is what I believe is a White-faced Ibis, and Blue-winged Teals and a turtle.

I saw more Yellow-rumped Warblers in one day than I have seen in my entire life up to this point.

I think this was a Great Blue Heron. It was huge, but its coloring seemed to be off.

The only shot that I got of Roseate Spoonbills. There was a big flock of them way off in the distance much too far for my little point and shoot camera.

Eastern Phoebe. Saw about half a dozen of these but they all seem to look out of focus.

Sparrows -- even after all the practice on the quiz thread, I'm not sure what kind of sparrows these are! Song sparrows?

Carolina Wren. I like the vines on the tree as much as the bird!

This Moorhen was swimming along with this alligator and he nearly swam right into his head. You can kind of see the bird's trail in the water and you can see how it curved right into the alligator. I don't know what this bird was thinking! There's a Pied-billed Grebe in the background too.

This was not the best picture of a Yellow-rumped Warbler, but I think it is the only one that I've ever gotten where I could see the yellow crown.

Thanks for all of the wonderful pics!

congratulations on a fine trip Elph. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks y'all. There were some serious photographers there with camera lenses as long as their arms. I was quite jealous but then my arms just ached the next day from holding my camera up all day, and I realized that if I want to get a real camera, I'll have to start working out!

Since I'm posting anyway, I'll do one more Yellow-rumped Warbler!

Yep; an immature (drably grey head)

Sparrows -- even after all the practice on the quiz thread, I'm not sure what kind of sparrows these are! Song sparrows?

I'd say probably Lincoln's.

Thanks everybody. I went a bit nuts. I was pretty much taking pics of anything that moved or looked like it was capable of movement!

Thanks for the IDs Resin.

Since I'm posting, here's one more Not a bird, but the biggest alligator that I saw that day. I just marvel at the strength he must have just to lift that enormous head.

What a great day Elphaba...great pics too! Those alligators are scary looking!

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

The alligators really are scary, and they are often so hard to spot. Two of my pictures showed alligators that I didn't see when I took the photos. I'll share this one b/c I remember taking it off of this little pier. This woman and her two kids were walking out on the pier with their fishing poles. Her son asked if there were alligators at that lake and she promptly said no. It was the second time that I'd heard a parent tell a kid that there were no alligators but I didn't say anything. When I got back and realized that this alligator was right off the pier, it totally made me laugh. You can only see part of him behind the duck that is landing. If I'd seen him, I would have made sure that he was in the photo too.

Yep, Mr. Alligator blends in well with his surroundings. I watched the video about the park: for sure, 5000 acres offers something for everyone. Thanks for sharing your photos, Elphaba.
