Colin - Here is a reply that I posted regarding your question

I usually tend to try and pronounce the words the way they would be pronounced in japanese, but in this case I have opted to pronounce it as if it were english ---short *i* and long *e*...and the *g* like a *j*...

There was a related thread on translating Romaji to English here

thanks Ron for the links...
so that would be: high jee or hee jee (two syllables) not heej (one syllable)

Colin - I have opted to pronounce as short i (as in hip) and long e (as in bee) ,but it is actually pronounced as noted in the GW post that I linked to...

Hello again guys,

I pronounce hige as:

HEE geh (capitalized characters denote where the accent should be - second syllable pronounced as "eh", like how canadians say "eh", shortened, not long "e").

I'm not so sure where to put the accented syllable, because HEE geh and hee GEH can mean two different things (if both variations exists in the japanese language).

For example, take the word content:

CON tent - noun
1. Usually, contents.
a. something that is contained: the contents of a box.
b. the subjects or topics covered in a book or document.
c. the chapters or other formal divisions of a book or document: a table of contents.

con TENT - adjective
Desiring no more than what one has; satisfied.

from http://www.thefreedictionary.com/content

In most asian languages, "i"'s are pronounced as "ee", "e" pronounced as "eh", "g" pronounced as soft "g"'s as in the word "game". the only time "j" (as in "jet") is pronounced is when you see "j" in romanji (closest sounding letter we have). Only exception I know of is in Tagalog/Filipino where "g" and "j" can or may be pronounced as "h".

And words are always pronounced by syllables:

A-ka-tsu-ki no ma-i not akatsuki no may
