My Daughter is due to have her second baby on Friday so I"ve been trying to help her out by looking after her 18 month old..........long story short they stayed for supper tonight and we have a big picture window looking out into our back yard and at my DH's bird feeding station. I had said to my Daughter that the birds haven't eaten their food, it's usually gone the day After DH fills it.......
Well while we where eating I saw something fly by and feathers all over the place. I asked my son inlaw if he saw it he said yah and it's on the fence. A HUGE hawk, never seen them in our yard other then early spring. DH says might be because they're migrating.(we're City Dwellers)
hawks
We've had hawks stake out our feeders, too. I hate seeing the songbirds die, but the big majestic hunting birds need to eat, too. They're really something, aren't they? Did you post anything about this in the Wildlife Forum? People there would love to see your story, I bet! :o)
we figure that we have an all bird bird feeder - one big hawk, one little hawk, lots of sparrows and such, no waiting. They tend to scare the smaller birds away for awhile, but they do come back. I love the finches and cardinals and even the blue jays and grosbeaks, but to have the pleasure of seeing a hawk when we almost lost so many of them is a sign of health in the natural system.
Wow you girls are late to bed and early to rise. I thought we needed something normal to talk about even for a while. I think I will post my story in wildlife. I've been watching for him (the hawk) today, and no signs of him. Some of the little birds, are coming to feed. I tried to get a picture, also but didn't get cloe enough, plus it was dusk.
We get alot of hawks in my area,,along with the eagles and owls,,they come in and will tree sit before swooping down for snacks,,but we live in the woods which are not their favorite hunting grounds,,we have lost not only birds from the feeders but several chickens and used to loose cats when we had outside cats.We watch our mini weenies well because they will swoop them too especially the eagles. But well we expect that in our area we are only about a mile and a half from the bird refuge,,
