I acquired a 7 year old spayed, declawed cat yesterday. Owner couldn't keep because she was moving in with boyfriend, who HATES cats. Said "get rid of the cat or I will shoot it". Nice guy.......MHO was keep the cat and RUN fast in the other direction from that creep. Anyway, she didn't ask for my advice. I have the cat. The cat cannot be an outside cat, which I am ok with, even tho the feline family already numbers 4. However, I NEED to crate "Kitty" (that is her name) until I am sure everyone can co-exist in harmony with a minimal amout of hissing and yowling. Kitty has never been in a crate. She does not like the crate. At this point she does not like me or Spousal Unit either. Hisses, growls, and if I put my hand in the crate to pet her, or even just to let her sniff me, all I can say is it's a good thing she is declawed. If this keeps up de-fanging might enter into it too.......LOL......just kidding. I talk to her, sit beside her on the floor, tell her she is such a nice kittycat, and that we want her to be happy. (Kitty is thinking I WANT MY MOM BACK). Any suggestions other than what I have been doing? Her own litter pan is in the crate (it is a good sized crate, I think a full-grown Sheltie would be comfortable in it), and I have her own feed and water dish. The lady had run out of dry food, so I put some of ours in. So far, no eating or drinking that I can see. She does seem a bit quieter now when I came in from outside chores and the barn than what she was when I went out at 5:30. Soooo............am I saving her from death only to have her pine away for her mom? *sigh*............I so want to do the right thing.
