A variegated hindu rope, I don't think I'd seen one before, just heard of them! Very pretty, love the new pink colored leaves that are emerging.

I found a nearly hidden hoya bloom a couple of weeks ago on this Crinkle 8 clone.

I had a Hindu Rope a long time ago. I had to spray it a lot [I used alcohol] because the bugs like all those little nooks and crannies.

Very pretty, I have several, I love the way they look.

boy i can't believe all the streps & sinningia's for sale on ebay, never seen that many at one time.

I noticed that too Bonnie. I recently bought Jacko's Gem--can't wait for that one to bloom! My sinns aren't blooming much--do they need more light than AV's?

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

i think they need to be closer to the lights than the violets.give it a try.i just got jaco's gem in bloom, love it.

So cool Bonnie! Is it difficult to get it to bloom? Do you like it? It is a bit odd...think that's what attracted me to it

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

actually, i bought it in bloom, i love the blooms on it, a little different than most.

I went to the Flower and Garden Show in Little Rock last week. I was somewhat disappointed with the offerings at most vendors. I did find a vendor speciallizing in tillandsias-- and could have spent mega-bucks. These are the ones I settled on, half the fun was finding containers etc when I got home for them. I did actualy find the cool antique japanese pot on the left at a thrift shop on the way to the show, and until I found the tillandsia vendor it was the highlight of the trip. the little lion was a surprise from lbrabec--I think it is perfect!!

Very, very cool Gran, I had never heard of tillandsias before, but after a quick google I like them!! ^_^ Love your perfect pot choices too.

Very nice HGran! Love the containers with your Tillandsia's. We have Spanish Moss (a tillandsia) growing in the trees down here in the south ... very cool looking: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=spanish+moss&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=4quuSeiNGIH8tgeV-ImABg&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&resnum=4&ct=title but a lot of folks don't like it, say it's a parasite and kills the trees. I love the looks of it myself, but I was born and raised in the south and it's just an every day sight.

Tillandsia are in the Bromeliad family and some have very beautiful blooms: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=tillandsia&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=PqyuSZ_WLYOftwfzoJWKBg&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&resnum=7&ct=title

This is a photo of a tree in my next door neighbor's yard showing Tillandsia "Spanish Moss", no pretty blooms but interesting none the less.

Lin, on one of our many trips to NY, we would stop at the rest stops on I-95 on the way home. One year I gathered up a bunch of spanish moss in Georgia. By the time we arrived home, we had tiny insects all over the back seat of the car. What a mess. We had to fumigate the car. My DH never lets me forget, every time we are on the road. He doesn't want to bring home any 'hitch-hikers' again. ^_^.
When we lived down in Tamarac, FL, my grandchildren would pick all the little tillandsias that were attached on the trees. They could'nt understand why they wouldn't live in NY. Not enough humidity. They thought they were air plants. ^_^

(Zone 1)

LOL, Yes ... Spanish Moss hanging in trees is covered with mites and spiders and little critters! A few years ago I took an old grapevine wreath and draped it with Spanish Moss and dried twigs and flowers for the side of the shed. But, before I crafted with it, I had to spray it real good!

Back in the 60's and 70's folks would collect the little Tillandsia's and mount them on a piece of Driftwood and sell them at the flea markets! The driftwood was free, moss and other tillandsias were free = 100% profit!

... and yes I admit, I did buy one!

At one time I would use driftwood for crafts. I made my sister a pretty silk flower arrangement years ago, using a neat piece of driftwood as the base. And one year I took a large piece of driftwood, draped it with old fishing net and put collected sea shells on it. Whenever we were at any beach I always collected shells, pieces of wood, unusual rocks ... Now when we have the boat out on the water I collect trash ... literally! I hate seeing people leave trash on the islands or beach. I finally got my husband trained ... for a long time he wouldn't motor over to trash floating in the water, but he does now ... and I either reach over the side of the boat or use a long pole or net to retrieve floating trash. There's one Island we anchor at here during the summer. We don't go out on weekends, too much boat traffic for me. On weekends the Island is packed with boats, families with their canopies, grills, chairs etc. And, it makes me so mad to see the trash they leave behind! No consideration for the environment whatsoever, or the marine life that it affects.

One of my Amaryllis is brightening up the kitchen. It's not fully open yet but still nice.

I think this is 'Apple Blossom', but I don't know for certain, the label faded and I haven't gone back through my pictures from when it bloomed last. She is pretty whoever she is.

I found both of these orchids growing in the same 3" pot at the grocery store...for $9! It was the only pot there with 2 plants in it and both look very healthy. Good thing 'cos I would have had trouble choosing between them!

There is a 3rd bloom spike also--I think on this plant. The clerk said these plants are mini;s, but her rationale was that they are mini;s b/c they are planted in a small pot! Doh!

Very scrumptious Goldleaf!!--but you need to dip it in chocolate ^_^ Gorgeous orchids ladies!! I am jealous--- I have orchid killer written al over me!!

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Lovely! Matches my stripes!
(ahem...I bought bagels too :-O)

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Haha!
HGran, seriously, anyone can grow these phalaenopsis moth orchids. They are so easy. I hate to say how some of mine get ignored and it doesn't bother them all that much. I would almost classify them as easy as philodendron or pothos. Give another phal a try. They accompany gessies very well.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Hey! Goldleaf--It takes great skill and intelligence to grow phals! Don't lead Gran on!

(ssshhhh....you are not supposed to let on that they grow like weeds!)

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Right...We are specialist exotic orchid growers. ;0)

(We won't mention how they seem to do just fine at Home Depot and the grocery store).

Williston, ND

ive always wanted to grow orchids but they just die on me
kinda like those stag horn ferns ,love those too, maybe though they do ok under lights

Well--maybe....

Dont listen to them gran! Anything that doesnt even use soil is a sure bet to overwater!!
I checked at Lowes yesterday & they had nothing like these! only cattylayas & those were $7 for a tiny sprig!
But I did find trays with 72 cells plus domes! Three for $8!

Just spent most of the morning potting up dahlia bulbs. I must have had a pretty garden last year because I sure do have dahlias! Too early to put them out but they are already sprouting in the feed sack I overwintered them in.
Look at this collection!

Hi Lin,
The amaryllis you have is a double so it is definitely NOT Apple Blossom.
The pink/white ones in this photo are Apple Blossom

Have to start cleaning up my plants overwintered in the basement. What a job!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I don't envy you at all. I'm glad I just have to go out and clean up dead leaves that have fallen from plants during winter and dump the pots that have plants that froze. The Ixora and Alamanda have to be cut back because of freeze damage too. DH takes care of the dead palm fronds, but I like to trim the shrubs. He doesn't cut off enough.
My cleanup is a matter of one or two days. Looking at yours, I would say weeks to get them all back outside. LOL

Wytheville, VA

That's about right! I cleaned 1 bed this afternoon, while Will built birdhouses. The swallows arrived today. during the winter, we had a bear tear down most of the boxes.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I didn't know that bears came near homes. Do you live in a rural area? I Richmond area, and dopey me, I thought most of VA was that way. I should have paid more attention to geography way back when, when I was in school. ^_^ ^_^ ^_^

Wytheville, VA

We have lived here nearly 20 years. While there have always been bear sign (claw mark on the fruit trees) only in the last three years have the actually approached the house. They make me very nervous as they are so powerful & unpredictible. The cougars are easier to live with since they always see you first and fade into the trees. You only glimpse one if it wants you to.
I enjoy the deer now that my garden is fenced. The coyotes will harm anything they can catch. Their arly morning howls are scary, but if everything in safely indoors, not a problem. In summer the game warden & animal control will hunt them.
the bobcat is a thrat only to my kitties. The dogs have chased it several times, even treeing it last week.
Oh! the other problem with the coyotes is that they have killed off the foxes which we dearly loved. The turkeys are fun to watch & listen to also.
everything seems to fit in except the bear. As I said, unpredictible. In the winter the wasps invade the bird houses and leave grubs behind..It is these the bear tears the boxes down for. Will insisted that it was the wind until I pointed out that the wind will blow down the box part, leaving the top attached to the tree. The bear simply smashes the whole thing into smithereens!

Oh, lovely Orchids, ladies! I have never seen an orchid for sale in our grocery store's here! I moved all of my orchids back outside yesterday and watered them well. Many need repotting and I need to feed them ... one has buds and a couple have bloom stalks. I agree about the Phal's being one of the easiest orchids to grow! My orchids hung in the guest bedroom windows for almost 3 months ... only got taken down and watered once in that time and they still survived! If I can keep an orchid alive with my neglect, I know some of you good growers would have great luck with them.

Kivit: Yes, I had to go back and look through what Amaryllis I have and that one in my above post is actually Amaryllis 'Aphrodite'. It's one I got in the co-op last fall. The stalk has another bud opening and a third that is beginning to show signs of opening.

Here's a picture of 'Aphrodite' once it opened all the way:

Kivit: I forgot to ask, are the solid Red Amaryllis in your photo 'Red Lion'? I do recognize 'Apple Blossom' now that you posted your photo, I have a few of those (dormant right now). What is the one in the center of the photo, with the red & white blooms?

This is Amaryllis 'Pasadena' when it was blooming last month:

I have to show these two pictures of a geranium that has been hanging in a tree in the backyard for two years. This winter it survived a couple of nights of mid 20º temperatures!

I took the first photo last Friday, March 6th and went back out on Sunday March 8th and something had literally chewed it to pieces!

Those Amaryllis pictures are gorgeous Lin!!

Very pretty geranium you had blooming on March 6th. That was DH and I's 33 wedding anniversary so the date struck me. ^_^

This is a recent picture of my Whirlpool Begonia. It has gotten really big and recently bloomed but the leaves are still the best part.
