I think these may be longicorn beetles but haven't seen such brightly coloured varieties before. Can anyone ID these? Taken in the Capricornia region of Queensland.
CLOSED: Unknown Mating Longicorns?
These are soldier beetles, family Cantharidae; likely Chauliognathus lugubris - see http://tinyurl.com/d25snr for a mating pair, also found in Queensland.

which calls them Chauliognathus tricolor so that's a bit strange. Still close enough for me to do some more research now.
I agree that Chauliognathus tricolor is closer to the mark. I had just given the site a cursory glance last night before posting; my only excuse is that I was exhausted from a 900 km road trip, and was in the process of staggering off to bed...
