Seed from store bought tomatos?

Oakland, MD

Would seed collected from a store-bought tomato germinate, or would they be duds?

I assume they would probably germinate, but the tomatoes you get might not taste good--most of the tomatoes you buy at the store are hybrids and won't come true from seed (unless your store happens to carry heirloom tomatoes--those would taste fine from seed) So if you're looking for tomatoes you can eat (vs just a fun experiment in growing stuff) then I'd recommend buying seeds somewhere.

Ok thanks =)
I might try just for fun, and see what happens!
I don't really care if they taste good or not as long as they are edible lol.

About 7 years ago Walmart carried a cherry type tomato called Sweet Things. It was the sweetest tomato I had ever tasted. I decided to dry out some seeds from a few tomatoes to see what I would get. I started the seeds the following season. Approximately 12 plants. Six I gave to my son-in-law.

What did I get? A mixture of tomato plants. None were small-growing plants. The plants all grew tall. Only 2 plants had clusters of small tomatoes, but ohhhh so sweet. The other 3 plants bore larger plum-type tomatoes, not as sweet. My son-in-law got similar result from the plants I gave him.

Unfortunately, Walmart discontinued selling this particular variety of tomatoes. I have never seen seeds offered for sale.
