After i left here yesterday out went the lights!! I went down to my pens and my pigeon pen was tetering on collapse and the others had 5 inches of snow on them. Tree limbs all around and trees bending i moved some in the path of a tree. We pushed snow till i was tired and cold i fell twice and then i thought MY CHICKS!! and Jelly Bean so my son helped me get the 5 out of the brooder pen and Jelly Bean went in a cage. Off to the house in the panic of moving and shoveling i said when i reached the door "MY EGGS"!
We piled on the towels and i crossed my fingers after 8 hours and no sleep no light's! I gave up and went to bed at 10:00 the oil lamp just wasn't doing a whole lot of light. But the wood stove was keeping us warm and all the animals we had brought in. Up and Down most of the night and just tired and wanting the lights on for my eggs
Lights Came on after 14 hours and i checked my incu cold as ice and candled the eggs ***Dead*** no movement and some had slipped to the bottoms of the eggs. Tore my heart out Just made me sick to see the little life forms so still and it looked like as i candled them it was going to be a great hatch. No little crelle or self blue, barred , or millie's and my fawn duckwings it was their first eggs this season just ruined I'm just heartbroken..........
My eggs are Dead !! So Sad :(
Oh gosh Harm I am so so sorry. With the brower and a power outage it would be hard to have placed candles in there but maybe keep that in mind next time of how you might be able to.
Glad you have power back now. Again so sorry.
Oh, how terribly awful! Such a disappointment. =0(
If you're interested, there's plans for a kerosene lamp powered brooder... the lamp is outside the brooder with some sort of funnel system for retreiveing the heat given off and channeling it into the brooder box. I can look it up and maybe mail it to you? Drop me a Dmail if you're interested.
Hug a bunny...
Jay
Harm so sorry about your eggs. I have also thought about losing power. Thought i would warm bricks by the fire and put them in the bator. may end up cooking them but worth a shot
Hopefully the next hatch goes better.
Are you all okay. I know that shoveling snow and slips and falls are hard on my body. Take it easyt.
Sheila
Thank you and everyone is fine Thankful no animals were lost and we had our woodstove for warmth. It all happened so fast within just maybe 3 or 4 hours we got 5 inches of wet snow. By the time the light's went out it just all started happening limbs and trees on our lot and our neighbors cracking popping and comeing down. Lost limbs on my maple and my elm and some trees are bent so bad i hope they recover.
The weather wasn't susposed to be this bad and i wasn't prepared for the power going out. Our weather rarely turns this bad and we never prepare for snow we just don't get that here so generators and snow shoes are just something if we bought it we would never use it.
My Eggs i can almost cry now over my eggs now i'm down 2 hatches i don't know if my hens can give me another 63 i will see if not i will have to order i was hoping to avoid that.
Running on about 4 hours sleep here and the snow is now a sheet of ice dangerous to walk on and watering and feeding turned into a major oooops oooops slipin and sliden event.
Schools closed and some roads are blocked so my DH is home and the sun is shining and looks like the snow is melting for my Eggs it's to little to late :(
So sorry about losing your eggs, Harmony. I agree w/ Sheila; please be careful in this nasty weather. I'm glad that you have a woodstove for heat; a house can cool down in no time when the power is out.
i 3rd that yes be very careful out there.
Ooops, I meant kerosene lamp powered incubator... not brooder.
This is what you get from someone who reads but does not do... yet.
=0) Jay
Sorry to hear Harmony....
Watch out for those limbs. A gentleman, a couple counties from here, died about a month ago when an ice-laden limb fell and hit him. they are very dangerous.
Harmony--I am very sorry. Our power managed to stay on, but only because the county made a point of butchering the trees near all the power lines in our neighborhood last summer and fall. If I lived closer, I'd have taken you and your eggs in for some warmth and sleep. The cats would have LOVED some visitors! I am really sorry. :(
Harmony I am so sorry for your lose. Please be careful.
That's so dreadfully sad, Harmony! Sending you a big {{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{hug}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}
Got 3 Eggs today and i hope my hens will be nice enough to let me fill my incu again. Snow is almost gone and the sun was warm and bright today i just can't believe the weather sometimes
Sometimes eggs are not lost to not having any power for hours..it just slows down the process of incubating them..when the power comes back on, the process starts back up..I have had this happened to me before with no power for 10 hours..Just open the bator to cool them off and when the bator starts back up..just close the lid..
I had put eggs in the ice box to stop the process in case I cant incubate them right away. Then I put the eggs out in room temps when I want to start incubate those eggs and then put them in the bator..
Moodene the yolks had slipped in the eggs so they were dead i candled to see if they were still viable. But when i saw the separated yolks and no movement i knew they were gone.
Oh Harmony, I'm so sorry to hear it. I know how you feel - it's like my goat - dead, but nothing you could have done.
I just sat last night hour after hour waiting for the lights to come on and nothing till 7 this morning and it was just too late.
Nothing i could do and i candled them in hopes they were okay but when the yolk slips their gone.
But i can start over and it will be full again soon :)
I am so sorry for your little eggies. Who would have thought you'd have to worry about a snow/ice storm in Georgia in March! Im sure you'll fill that incubator up again soon, but Im so sorry you lost all of those babies. It is hearbreaking.
Oh no! I'm sorry for your loss Harmony. I know it's hard to take. Remember to focus on the positive, you didn't loose your birds! Count your blessings.
*easier said than done when you're sad... I know*
so sorry to hear, hope ur girls give ya lots of eggies soon!! think on the positive side u and all the animals r safe and sound and that is what's important. it's heartbreaking i know but u can always hatch again since u still got all the breeders.
stay warm and safe,
silkie
Harmony, I am sooo sorry about your hatch. Especailly after the last one was such a dissapointment as well. Who knew you would have such a bad storm? I hope all the other animals and pens are okay. I am just so sad for your eggs. :( Please know I am thinking of you. Your friend, and cuz, Jeanmarie {{HUGS}}
Thanks JeanMarie i'm really thankful it wasn't any worse than it was and i didn't lose any animals my house did look like a zoo for a couple days tho LOL
Thanks silkie i been at this for so long till it's like disappointment just comes with it. I always just put on my best poker face and move on to the next thing :)
GOOD NEWS! I have got 9 eggs in the last 2 days if this keeps up i will have it full in no time ^_^
O JOY dear Harmony. {{{{{{{Harmony}}}}}} for your loss.
Yaaaay! You've got some great layers there Harmony!
See? That's what I call focusing on the positive! Congrats.
Thank You Claire and ZZ
Oh wow, Har. Just heard. I had wondered how you did in all that mess. So sorry, but glad you're back up and running...
I'm so sorry Harmony!
So sorry about the eggs. I know you are very disappointed. I wonder if putting some of those air activated heating things like you use on your neck, back ect or the hand warmers you get in the hunting department would keep eggs warm enough until the power comes back on. Hopefully it won't happen to you again.
How come you're giving Har toilet paper?
To wipe the tears!
It just seems so low budget... I've got a bandanna here... it's even clean!
=0D
Jay

Aaaahhhhh.....lol. Couldn't get there to save me!!
Well, call me a little heathen, that never would have occurred to me either. LOL
