Help please....about MG in hanging pots

(Zone 4a)

Do you think MG would do well trailing from pots - instead of having them grow up things? I was just curious. I would like to try having them cascade out of some hanging pots but I have never seen it done....any ideas?

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

I think they would just 'turn back' on themselves and head towards the heavens.

(Zone 4a)

Would that be a bad thing? It might make the plant look fuller? Ahhh not sure if I should try it or not.....

Is Cameo Elegance one that can be trained to grow in a hanging container, I wonder? Kawaii is one of those Japanese MGs that does not seem to wind around structures and might be a good candidate. You would love the highly variegated leaves and the many bright red flowers that Cameo Elegance makes.

All the ones I have planted in baskets ended up climbing anything they were close too, so maybe if you were to nip and train and keep the basket away from wires, cords, trees, shrubs, gutters etc. Just my opinion..

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Joeswife is right - you could train it with stiff wire, if you could keep up with it.

(Zone 4a)

Hmmm my idea is starting to sound like too much work. Ugh. Oh well thanks for your input....at least now I will try to think of something else. Thanks again!!!

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Dawn, I don't see any 'work' involved - just suspend wires from the rim of the hanging basket and wrap the vines around the wires a couple of times - they will do the rest. When they get to the bottom of the wires, snip them off. I hadn't thought of this neat idea - I will try it once and see how it works!

Don't grow old - grow plants!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Dawn, grow some Mgs in a basket! just have fun!

DawnLL -There is an Ipomoea nil known by the Romaji of Chidori (Takii) and Tsubame (Sakata) that is excellent for hanging containers...I will attach a photo of the packet...

There are other Ipomoea nil that are trailers and do not twine...they are known by the Romaji terms shidare and suiyou...

Here are some other MG's that should do well in hanging containers

Convolvulus althaeoides

Thanks, Ron! NOW - where can we buy the seeds?

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Kay - Well, I just gathered together the links so people could see what the different species / types look like , but it's up to everybody who may be interested to do their own plant and / or seed hunting / locating...knowing what types might work is a substantial portion of the formula...some types are currently more common than others......although a web search will usually turn up something...

I have plans to do just that Ron! You have done a lot of the work, now it's up to me to put those names in google.com and see if I can find seed sources. Thanks!!!!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Convolvulus sabatius.. I had last year and it did well, but did not seed for me..it is a good full spreader

those Japanese packest show flowers and growth style similar to minibar rose... when ive looked at the I.nil vaieties listed above by Ron through google translate... they tend to be called 'Plover' types... and they all tend to have red flowers with or without a white picotee and crystal variegation...

Debra.. it my understanding the you may need more than one clone inorder to get seeds from your Convolvulus sabiatus....

i've found that I.ternifolia are often advertised as i.leptotoma wich is a synonym. (i will be growing those this year)... i've also seen Convolvulus althaeoides for sale...

Kay, the way Aphis has been clamping down on seeds imported to the USA, it might be quicker to put in an order with Onalee or Emma. The Japanese have several strains bred just for this, but as was mentioned above, they are lacking in color variety. They have succeeded in getting rid of that rampaging coiling characteristic in these few strains, and they don't grow long vines. Frank

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Do you have a link to Emma's site where I can buy seeds? Thanks

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Kay - Welcome to the MG forum! Another good mounding MG is Sun Smiles. Pretty variegated leaves and the flowers do come in several different colors. :-) Also Kawaii. :-) Both look great in hanging baskets!

Clatskanie, OR(Zone 9b)

Here is a nice site with some Mexican and SW convolvulaceae. Frank

Oooh, this one is fabulous! Is this the typical convolvulaceae longifolia bloom colors? What a beautiful bloom! I wonder how invasive it is?

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

We still have not learned where we can buy the seeds for these.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Kay - I have a few seeds left of Kawaii and Sun Smiles (mixed together of mixed colors) for postage if you are interested. D-mail me.

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Kay - The Beni Chidori and Tsubame sometimes show up on ebay...

The Convolvulus, Evolvulus, Ipomoea batatas and Jacquemontia pentanthos (aka J.violacea) species I had mentioned are usually available as clonal plants and therefore the nursery stock available doesn't usually produce seeds, but nurseries offering plants are usually easy to locate with a google search...

The other Ipomoea species that are native to the SouthWest are still in the process of being located and multiplied...

The more the members here keep an eye out for the native species, the more likely we are to be able to locate and share them...hopefully sooner than later...

agreeing with Becky... ipomoea longifolia is fabulous

Thanks, Frank - $2 per seed is more than I would EVER pay.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I have four people in the south western states looking for me some seeds.. YAY! Ex is looking in padre islands and galveston hope he gets some good ones.

Clatskanie, OR(Zone 9b)

I agree Kay. I intended this to show you why you can' t find them. Not to mention, also, $1 each seed for mailing it to you. There are not enough people buying seeds from Japan and bringing them over here yet. Frank

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Hey Frank, ever since I started saving the red meat water as you suggested and feeding my vines and hibs they have really taken off.. thanks for that information..

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Colin - Nice find (!)...

The trader in Sweden
http://www.hort.net/lists/hortexchange/jan99/msg00002.html
has both Ipomoea longifolia and Ipomoea cardiophylla listed

Maybe somebody could work out a trade with these traders....
