Hi
This one was names Vriesea Purple Haze but when I google that name, they look so much darker. This one lights up a room!
Anyone know the name of these?
I have never seen white one, but sure would like to find one or two.
Hi Kell, those names are toatlly not right. Your Vrieseas are hybrids of the foliage Vrieseas, such as V. platynema, V. fenestralis, V. heiroglhphica e.t.c.
They are very beautiful, and much sought after. Can you contact the person where you got them, and try to trace them back? They are gorgeous!
Sue
look at these lovelies

you are too lucky kell! Check out the Vriesea cultivars, starting with Vriesea 'Tasman Aurora'. Mmmmmm, drool....drool.....
Now that was painful. I want all of them! Though many were very similar. By far Vriesea
'Tasman Tartan' called my name. I swooned. I need this one! I think I should have it too for I am Scottish. LOL
Loved these too:
Vriesea 'Tasman Rose'
Vriesea 'Tasman Temptress'
Vriesea 'Tiger Tim'
I think my second one is Vriesea 'Tasman Vanilla Ice'
eBay was selling similar ones last year, a guy from Hawaii. I was going nuts wanting them. I bought one for a big price and when I got it I was so disappointed. It had so many cut off leaves at the base (a 1/2 inch of each leave was left so I could count them) and the plant was dwarfed and looked a bit odd because of all the leaves missing. Of course in the eBay ad, the pic was taken straight down so you did not see the problem. When I complained I was told this is how bromeliads were - - normal to have to cut the older leaves off. Well I never have had to do that. Now that I have had the plant awhile, I see why. It must have a genetic problem for the bottom leaves get weird looking and get ugly. I was so taken. I haven't bought a plant on eBay since. Too bad too because I would have bid on lots of his plants if I had gotten a decent one.
THANK YOU for the thrill, Weed Woman!
No worries Kell.
V. 'Tiger Tim' is a hybrid from a man called Peter tristam, who coincidentally lives about 25 minutes drive from here! I bought a couple of plants off him about 2 years ago, and was lucky enough to have a look around his nursery. Unfortunately, I wasn't as knowledgable as now, and probly glanced over some really good stuff! V. 'Tiger Tim' goes for around (AU)$200 + on ebay! There are alot of lovely hybrid Vrieseas around now. I'm in the midst of playing with paintbrushes, so might get some nice ones one day. Growing Vrieseas from seed is a VVVEEEERRRRYYYYY slow process! Meanwhile, I'm waiting for them to flower first! He, he.
Sorry about your disappointment with Ebay. Now you know the problems that can occur, it is a good idea to ask the seller for more photos, and an exact discription of any damage. I, too, have had a few disappointments, but found most of my purchases to be very pleasing. I am avoiding Ebay now, as there is a local plant fair in two weeks, and there is a bromeliad seller there who always has some nice stuff, so I'm saving my dimes!
Sue
What fun to be able to go to Mr Tristam's house. Can't you get an invite back there?
You have to take pics from your local plant fair for us so I can be so jealous. I want to come too!
Wasn't it in Australia that was hybridizing outrageous neoregelias? I remember looking at a site a couple of years ago that made me nuts wanting them all. Such colors. I twas a nursery that was for sale too. I had more than one dream of buying it and thus getting all those bromeliads for myself. I am a very needy person.
So how long from seed to flower? I may try to collect pollen from my Vriesea 'Red Chestnut' to put on my white one. I just love the patterned ones with great color! I just so need this one.
Kell, I have no idea about the time from seed to flower! I've always bought my plants half way there, or in flower. I'm only new at growing from seed, and so far, the Vrieseas are about 3mm high, (after 3 months)! I guess it could take awhile!
Neos are fun to play with, and the seed germinates and grows quite quickly (10mm in 3 months) I skipped around with the paintbrush in early summer, when it semed like every Neo was flowering, and I tickled every flower I could find. So far, i have 4 different seed types on the go, but I'm not sure if its due to my meddling or to self polination. It will be fun to see what comes out of it. I think I did hear of a nursery in queensland, Bromagic? I think it was/is for sale and they do a lot of hybridising of Neos.
http://members.ozemail.com.au/~bromagic/
I clicked on 'CD ROM' and at the bottom of the page, it said this nursery is for sale, so i guess it must be the same one. They only do Ebay now I think.
I will take my camera to the plant fair, just for you Kell.
This is a pic of my Vrieseas, at the back. I've been moving things around, and some now live outside
What a great setup you have there. Is this outside or an inside room? I left some of my Vrieseas outside and they did great, no damage at all. I was so shocked for they seem so delicate. It gets to 34 here. I had lots of brugmansia damage.
Yours are just gorgeous. You must have had fun with your paintbrush. LOL. What is that whitish one on the left?
I can't wait to see your local plant sale. Take some wide angles too. What fun to see where you live. We get a lot of Australian plants here now. They are such fun. I have a serious love affair from a distance going on with protea, leucadendrons and leucospermums and the more Australian plants of Banksias, Hakeas and Grevilleas. I loved phormiums a few years back but the colors are too unstable.
That could be the same nursery though when I looked they had pages of so brightly colored neoregelias. My eye is so attracted to gaudy color in all thing blooming. LOL
Yum yum

Its an outside room Kell. Made with galvanised tube and covered with shadecloth.
Your temps of 34 is equivalent to 0 degrees here I think. We only get to about 40, on your scale, over winter, and it's not for very long. Some broms can go to temps of 20 (-5 here).
I think the one you mean is V. 'Red Chestnut'? at the back left? The one in the foreground is Neoregelia 'Barbie Doll', not a very spectacular plant, I don't know what possessed me!
I don't have alot of experience with the native plants of Australia, but have planted various rainforest species, as these appeal more to my taste for the tropics.I love Phormiums, as I am originally from N.Z, where they are native. I have HUGE green ones I grew from seed, not the usual coloured, smaller varieties. I find the coloured ones suffer from the humidity here, but the green seed grown ones don't? lucky for me.
Heres a closer look at V. 'Red Chestnut'
I will take a pic on one of my V. 'Red Chestnut. Just to compare! It sure is a pretty one. I love broms that have that netting like pattern. Recently I read on ebay where it was described as fenestrated foliage. Have you heard that adjective? I wonder if it is correct.
I went back to where I got that white brom and picked up the pink one. It killed me for I had to pay $70 but I wanted it. LOL All its lower leaves are dragging though. I sure hope it has not already flowered.
There is a Vriesea called V. fenestralis, that has stripes,e.t.c, but I have never heard of the patterning being described as fenestrated. Tesselated, striated, barring and speckled are the ususal descriptive terms. I googled "fenestrated" and got this: Having fenestrae or windowlike openings. I think it relates more to medical terminology?
Your new Vriesea looks lovely. Did it come with a name? I hope for you that it hasn't flowered, but it looks pretty fresh in the pic.
I am praying for good weather on Saturday for the Autumn plant fair! We have had a fair ammount of rain in the past week, as there is a cyclone sitting off the coast up north. We are only getting the rain though, thank goodness!
My newest purchase is a red ginger (Costus something?) Since starting with the broms, I am now addicted to all things tropical!
Sue
I love tropical plants too. You must be a bit warmer then I am. A red ginger sounds interesting! I have bought and killed so many fancy gingers I have stopped buying them.
I bought another bromeliad with striations. I just love that look. A Vriesea gigantea. The guy switched plants when I went to get my wallet to one that had some damage to it so that ruined my excitement over it somewhat. But still it is so pretty!
Hope you have great weather for your show tomorrow. Have fun!
That was a bit cheeky of him, kell! It's little things like that, that can cause a bad reputation to his nursery. Silly man!
The fair was great. I was disappointed in that I didn't see anything that was really different to what I already have, and some vendors were markedly more expensive than the spring fair. However, I did get a vriesea hybrid for $11, and a couple of Neos (N. 'Aussie Dream' Cv $11, N. 'Fanfare' $11 and a large unamed Neo which I will get a pic of soon) An Aechmea pectinata $20, Vriesea vagans $8, a carnivorous pitcher plant $12, and a trio of dwarf date palms (three in a pot at 60cm tall) $7. So I spent plenty of money, but also came home with alot left over,as I have been saving for awhile. Hubby and i went out for dinner and spent it all then!
We got to the fair before 8am and were getting the pick of plants before it got too busy.
My friend was lucky enough to find a couple of bargains hidden amongst the common broms, and picked hereself up an Alcantarea extensa for about $12! I thought it was an Aechmea fasciata, because of the frosty grey leaves, and didn't give it a second look! Kicking myself!
I was pretty happy shopping though, and took my garden trolley so we didn't have to make trips back to the van.
It was lovely and shady at the fair, and we went for coffee afterwards. I'm now looking forward to the Spring fair, and will be trying to get my shade house extension built before then, as i have really run out of protected space to put any more plants. I will also need somewhere to put my seedlings when the time comes too.
I hope you enjoyed the pics, kell. It didn't really do the fair justice, but you get the idea.
Sue
Oh my! Looks like so much fun. I so wish I was there. I would have given you a run for the best ones. LOL. Your favorite stall has a few broms in that pic that I want! LOL. What is that white looking one in the middle? http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6269362
Your friend looks so happy with herself. I would be too. Esp when the friend you went with is lusting over a plant you snagged. LOL. Makes it all the better. Is that an arisaema in your friend's cart too? I am going to a huge show here Wednesday and hoping to add to my arisaemas. I bet they have few if any bromeliads for sale.
Lots of those here here too http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6269356 Though I sure like the 2 on the end nearest to us. That one looks like a huge neo with purple tips.
I can't believe how many broms that were for sale. They must be really popular in Australia. I want the hot pink one in this pic http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6269373 The one that is at the base of the table. I would have made a bee line to tha tone. I can't wait to see pics of the ones you bought. I am not familiar with those names.
Thank you so much for sharing your day with me. I so enjoyed looking at all your pictures. What fun! So when is your spring show? Here spring is just starting and the weather is so great.
I am off today to go look at a bromeliad a nursery just got in for me about hour plus away. I hope it is a great one but if not that is fine too. I am going broke on these. And I am out of money for the show. My husband is going to be so unhappy with me when the charge card comes in.
It feels like this forum is just for us. Kind of nice that way. LOL.
Gosh, i just lost my post Kel! Thats me in the pics! Having a happy time!
The pitcher plant is mot an Arisaema, but a sarracenia. I have a plant in the garden similar to yours but its called an Arisarum.
The stall with the big Neos (purple tips, you were right) is where i got my big neo, which is variegated and with a purple centre. Its raining outside so i can't take pics.
The white one that you enquired about did not catch my eye while there, but I'm making an assumption that its a Neo.
The Spring fair is in September I think. It will start to cool down now and will be at its coldest in July - August. Most of my plants stay relatively green and some still flower, as the chance of frost here is quite remote.
I hope your Brom was everything you wished for? Your poor Hubby! he will get a ffright. You'd better be nice to him and make a cuppa for him and fetch his slippers! he, he.
I save my gardening money, so always have cash for plants! The nurseries are too dear here, so i make the effort to find other bromeliad collectors that have a few spares for sale, or would like to swap something. Although i don't have a real lot to swap just yet!
Take care kell, and I'll catch up again when the rain stops and i can get some pics.
Sue
Hey Kell, did you get lost in amongst the broms? Maybe there was a brom avalanche? what a way to go, buried in broms.........*sigh*
I am so sorry, Sue. I have so many pictures and so many bromeliad stories that I was overwhelmed. I kept meaning to get to them. So instead of showing them one by one I will just show you the cart of them I bought last week. LOL I was out of control. And they are HUGE! In 8 or maybe 10 inch pots.
I have been going out everyday and taking so many photos. I then spend hours going thru them trying to delete most of them. My hard drive is almost full and here it is spring. Shoot. Today I took about 1500. Yes, 1500. I have no clue how I take so many. I need to delete 90% of them! And do it fast.
It is good to see you, Sue! You are so young! I am old. LOL
Your weather is just the opposite of ours as July and August will be our hottest. Though I do not get that hot here. About 76 all summer. We get no rain at all from May till November. Then it rains a lot or should. We are in a severe drought. They are going to water ration us. I hate that with all my plants.
In a way I did get lost in a brom avalanche! I think I have bought about 7 since we last talked. I am so sick. One has lots of pups.
Here are 4 I bought at the wholesale place but they still were a fortune. But they are really huge.
I had no clue that much time has elapsed since I have been here. It zoomed by. Every day I go out and get into trouble. LOL
Here is a garden I like to go to. Filoli. http://www.filoli.org/
Hi Kell, what alot of treasures you got with those foliage Vrieseas! The crotons look lovely too, and also the Iresine.
The other bromeliad looks like a Nidularium. N. innocenti has a variegated form, but not a red form. (that i know of) I have N. 'Ruby Lee' which is variegated in burgundy/green/white. I thought yours looks a little like Nidularium rubens, but I think there are a few with the burgundy underneath. Good score anyway.
I haven't looked at the link to the garden you like to visit just yet, but will go and have a squizz now.
Sue
Ok, Wow, I just had a browse. The layout makes me think the place is HUGE! I bet you could stay there all day and not see it all?
Thanks for sharing Kell!
It takes me a few hours to go thru Filoli but I am taking tons of pictures as I do. You can go thru the house too. It was the house used on the TV show Dynasty. I do not know if the show was shown where you are.
I tracked down where the nursery got the foliage vrieseas from. Actually I even tracked down the place in Hawaii that sent them. LOL. They told me they were going to get 150 in Wednesday so I was there bright and early. But they had not come! So I was told to come back the next day, I did. And still none. So I went in today and still none! I asked a worker and he said he would check. Turned out they were in just not put out. So he let me go in the back and pick thru them all! Most were Red Chestnuts. But lotsof others too. I was a glutton. I picked 15 though I did put a couple back so I am not sure how many I ended up with. I will have to count them again.
My favorite.
