How long has it been since you imported seeds into USA

This thread is to explore the relative intensity of restrictions on import of seeds into the USA from foreign sources.

It has been a little over a year for me, getting seeds from Silverhill seeds in South Africa, where they speak English.
In the intervening time, friends on this forum have had their seeds confiscated at the border. This is very disheartening to these fine people who have done much to educate all of us about the species of the family Convolvulaceae.

I continue to see seeds posted for auction, that just make me drool. But as Ron mentioned, their taxonomic skills can't be relied on. Most of the time, the specie is like a one time thing, and when they are gone, they are gone. This gives you no time to obtain a permit, to keep inside the law. If you were to try to get them on a gamble they will be confiscated at the border. Now I am reading what foreign sellers are warning of : get your permit first.

I went to the USDA site to begin the process and found that, you first have to set up an account with them, in order to access the information and the forms necessary, to apply for the permit. I copied off several copies, and saved them. By the time I found some seeds I wanted to import under permit, they had changed the form
number required. When you fill out the form, it wants the Latin name, and the country of origin. By the time I knew these things, my account had expired from lack of activity. So I filled out the old form, with a long list of countries I would like to import from, and the genera I would like to import, and put it in the mail.

Have any of you folks, in the USA, successfully obtained a small packet permit ? Frank

It is my understanding not all seeds requires permit. May be that is not the case for MGs, but recently I received Canna seeds from a trade in Australia and she declared the seeds and it came through. Also, I received vegetable seeds from Canada that was inspected by Homeland Security and they cleared.

I just got some seeds this week from Hungary in about 4 days. They did not get inspected or held up at all.
