Oh, and I forgot to post this picture of Amaryllis 'Piquant'. It just opened this morning and I think it's lovely! I got several Amaryllis this year. First time I've ever grown them, but I wanted one of the Butterfly Amaryllis, papillio or something like that, so bad but looked everywhere and couldn't find one. :o(
OT February Blooms #2
HI Rain!!
Your orchids are so beautiful and well-grown. Phals are a joy, aren't they? And easy, to boot. I can't grow a paph to save my life though.
Do you grow oncidiums or zygos?
I'm excited because I found a spike on my Zygo that I've had for almost 4 years and it has NEVER bloomed!!!! You can't imagine my surprise. I'm babying this baby on!!!!! LOL
What a gorgeous phal.........I want it!! Never have I seen that color combination.
Rose that is so very pretty!!!!
I feel Phal Fever coming on....:)
pretty,pretty,pretty ^_^
Hi Shanika! How are you? I do love the Phals! The one you sent me is about to bloom! It never did bloom last year, but I let it get a nice cool snap this past fall and it put up a spike. I knocked it over and broke the tip off the spike, though, and literally had tears in my eyes. LOL Well, then I remembered that I had some KeikiPro. Some say it works and some say it doesn't. I figured it couldn't hurt and might be my only chance at getting blooms, so I treated the next three nodes below where I broke the spike. It definitely works! TWO of them put out a new spike! Woohoo! LOL Won't be long til we see what it looks like! I want to say you thought it was a yellow harlequin...
I can't grow Paphs either, though I love the small bulldog ones. I have one that's a species, (niveum maybe?), but I'm pretty sure it's all but dead.
I have some mini Oncidiums, (which aren't really Oncidiums anymore, Tolumnia or Rcdm or something along those lines) but they haven't bloomed for me. One is in spike, though, and I can't wait to see it bloom!
I've also got a couple Catts in sheath. The only problem with Orchids is having to wait so long for those flowers! LOL Dendrobium unicum is budding, too, and I can't wait to see and smell those flowers.
Here's a peloric Phal that's blooming. These are new blooms on the old spike from last year, and it also has a new spike. It's impossible to get the correct color on this one. A very light lemon yellow with baby pink. Maybe if we ever get some sunshine I can capture the color better.
Hi Karen! I'm doing good and my husband is better. How are you and yours? We really need to catch up, and I know it's my fault that we haven't kept in touch better. :o(
Your Phal is beautiful! I like the ones with stripes or speckles. I'll go back and find the other one you posted. Phals are great about being in bloom so long. I've had several mini Orchids bloom and the flowers are gone in just a few days. Hardly time to enjoy them at all! LOL I'll try to find some pictures of them today and post them. They were pretty, just didn't last long enough.
Amy, this is too exciting! You know, I think about you and the phal often. Praying that it will bloom for you. :) Now you've got buds!!!!! Go girl!!!! I will be watching this thread for the pic of it open. I'm so happy for you! Can you tell? LOL
Oh, and I love the peloric. Did you put some of the paste on that one too? I love that first pic you posted on this thread. Buddha or something like that.
I have some keikis that I'm growing on from one of my NOIDs(but believe it's Baldan's Kaleidoscope). The plant itself looks pretty bad as far as leaves, but it's got two spikes full of gorgeous blooms now. LOL I've always heard that orchids can look pretty ratty, but give gorgeous blooms. I hope the leaves will grow out pretty, though. It's nice to have the foliage AND the blooms all at once!
If I could just get my minicatt Iwangaara Apple Blossom to bloom, I would be so happy! I guess patience is the name of the game with orchids. I never thought my Zygo Jumping Jack Big Beans would bloom, but now after 3 years, I finally have one spike!
I'm back. LOL
I'm excited about your Hoya peduncles too.:) I have a Heusckeliana, but no peduncles. I've heard that it smells like butter. Arenn't there two forms? a yellow bloomer and a pink bloomer? I think so...
Also, I checked my H. Compacta last night and found 2 peduncles. I must be careful about the watering and humidity now so that they don't blast on me. A challenge, but doable. LOL
My H. Shepherdii is loaded w/peduncles. Kim(Kimscreations) sent it to me as a cutting a couple of years ago. It bloomed as a cutting, so I've seen what the blooms look like. They look like little porcelain flowers.:)
Will post pics if/when these babies bloom!
Gail, you will love the fragrance on Hoya lacunosa ... a sweet smelling hoya! I Love the foliage on H. obscura but for some reason can't keep that one alive, I've tried twice and it succumbed quickly both times!%@% I have H. wayetti and like the scent of those blooms too. Gee ... I wish I had something blooming now! No Gessies in bloom, No Hoya's in bloom!
My Hoya shepherdii has one peduncle that has been sitting there for over a year, no blooms yet.
My heuschkeliana is the one with the purplish colored blooms and I posted it in Plant Files and noticed all the others there have yellow blooms so I probably should have Admin remove my photo. I wonder if there is another listing for the one I have? Will have to check.
Loving all these bloom photo's ... hopefully something here will show some blooms soon!
Beautiful gessiegail!
Gail, What is the plant in the picture to the left and behind your H.wayetti? I love the markings on the leaves.
I finally figured out how to grow obscura, Lin. Last summer I burned her so badly I didn't think she would come back. This summer I don't intend to put her anywhere but on the front porch with indirect lighting as she has bloomed twice since I took away from the direct sun at all.
Thanks PlantiMcPlanter.....I love growing and can't wait to show everyone Tia Pink when she finally does burst into bloom.
Oh..by the way, Lin. I picked up a plant in CC while buying veggie seed and plants for the garden. I couldn't figure out what she was but Goldleaf finally told me and showed me that she is probably Aeschynanthus Radicans. I think you have one. Please tell me if she is pretty when she blooms.
OK everybody stop with all the beautiful pictures..LOL.Can't afford another addiction! Lin,sooner or later you will be hopelessly seduced (as I was) to grow Gessies again by all of these gorgeous winter blooms.
Lynn
Lynn, I know what you mean. Since joining DG, I've started collections of orchids, gessies (mainly streps), epiphyllums, hoyas. When will it end!?!?! LOL Of course I had to buy plant shelves for all the plants. And I've got so many seeds to start, I may have to buy more shelves and lights. OH MY!
Sarah
OH, I forgot to add that in order to be a proper DGer, you must have a digital camera so you can take pictures of your lovely plants. I have yet to take care of that little item, but I hope to remedy that soon!
Don't anyone forget to grow the easiest plant to grow of all............morning glories! Thanks for reminding me I need to get one to a 4" pot under the lights.........there goes a shelf...........it only takes one month from seed to bloom on morning glories. You don't want to start them too soon unless you have plenty of room with a lot of sun until you can put them outside.
Gail, that's great advice. I've got several that I want to start from seed this year, and I certainly don't want them climbing my plant shelves! LOL.
Gail, love the smell of Lacunosa. I've grown one that bloomed like crazy over the summer. But, when I brought it in for the winter, it went into steady and rapid decline. So, those have been marked off my list. It was heartwrenching.:(
Gail, Aeschynanthus radicans: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/53439/ is a BEAUTIFUL Lipstick plant, one of my favorites! Unfortunately mine is no more :(
I lost it last summer (along with quite a few other plants) to mites or something, when I didn't isolate new stuff that I got. I hope everyone heeds that lesson ... Isolate ANY new plant(s) you bring into your house! I had been warned over and over about that and never listened.
I thought I had Lipstick Plant, Aeschynanthus cultivar Black Pagoda: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/53424/ but someone awhile back ID'd mine correctly as A. longicaulis: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/77824/ because of the color of the blooms, so I had Admin. move my photo's to the correct spot in PF.
Compare blooms of the two! Black Pagoda blooms are so much more colorful and prettier!

Lin, thanks so much!! my blooms look more like Black Pagoda but she didn't bloom a lot..........I remember the color...........
Just for any interest in this advice: I need to do this in the next few weeks...........Take Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub......follow the directions and pour through every hanging basket and pot on the front porch..........
Aeschynanthus radican I do have and thanks for the red blooms.
That is good advice Gail. I guess I should bite the bullet and spray/treat more often. I have always been so leery of using sprays/chemicals etc. I've used water with dish liquid and the Garden Safe products and last year, I did use the BATS on my Gardenia bushes in the yard that had Thrips. I need to get it out and use it on everything. I always worry about poisoning my cats but I can make them stay in the house while I treat everything on the pool deck and porch.
I have a cat, Lin, and she doesn't even flinch when I am either spraying with malthion or using the watering gallon of Bayer..........but I admit I don't let her around while I am doing it. After that, she is on her own.............
I hope she doesn't chew on your plants ... especially if you use Malathion, which is highly poisonous.
We had a cat die from poisoning years ago and it is a very painful and sad way for any creature to die.
The cat has never been interested in eating any of my plants............
Hi Rain .... waving hand here......Love the orchids but I keep telling myself I'm not going there! LOL I'll stick with the streps and the sinningias and the hoyas and the..... ^_^
Guess it's time for a OT March Thread
