please,
Just before 9:30 tonight, Rocco was hit by a car. When he didn't come in with the other 2 dogs, we went outside and found him lying on the side of the road. He thumped his tail once when I first spoke to him.
I kept him lying down until my DH got a comforter we could use to carry him with. We got Rocco into the family room and set him on the floor next to the fireplace.
A few frantic calls to the vets in the area determined that our usual vet was away, and there was no emergency vet service for small animals closer than an hours drive.
By this point we were concerned if he was so badly injured that the kindest treatment would be euthanasia, it be done sooner, rather than later.
A call to the vet living up the road from us had him in our family room within 10 minutes.
THANK YOU DR. STEVE SCOTT!
Dr. Scott assessed Rocco, and gave him treatment for shock and some antibiotics for the abrasion on his nose, (and another med I can't remember the name of D-something). Rocco's nose is most likely broken. Dr Scott said that at home in front of the fireplace was probably the best place for Rocco tonight, since he'd be alone at the vet clinic. the treatment he'd given him was the same if he had been brought into the clinic earlier tonight. The best thing for Rocco is warm and quiet.
Within the last half hour or so, Rocco has been able to shift himself around trying to get comfortable, and into a position where he can breathe a little easier with his busted up schnozz. Rocco had been trying to get to his feet earlier, but I've been telling him to lay down and stay down. Keep still. He's been resting quietly for about an hour, now. deeper, slower breathing...
Tomorrow will tell us more and if there is a back/spine injury. If he's able, I'll get him up and into the clinic for xrays and further treatment.
The two other dogs and the cats know something is going an. They have all come around and sniffed Rocco. All the pets are sleeping in the family room tonight with Rocco and me.
It will be better in the morning. It will.
Rocco needs some positive thoughts sent his way tonight.
