help for a beginner, please

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have so many seeds, I don't know what to plant.
Becky sent me a lot.
Gerris sent me some.
Karen sent me some.
Onalee I got 9 packages from.

I don't know enough to know what to plant next to each other or do I not worry about the colors.
If I am growing in, for example, 10 or 12" pots next to the tall tall cattle fences put up, how many seeds would you put to a pot?
Thanks
gail
PS This is an very nice group of people to send seed to me.

Hi Gail - If you want to try and avoid unintended crosses then stagger the different species...you could also place the types that look the closest to each other,so that if natural pollinator crossing does occur >the resultant crosses will tend to be more like the parents...you could also intentionally place very different types next to each other in the hope that you will get some interesting crosses...

You can hand pollinate certain flowers and tag them to increase the likelihood that you get some seeds that will be what you want them to be...

Hope that helps...

i usually put one seedling per gallon pot. sometimes it gets too if they have grown together. some people go bigger for each one. but basically one per gallon pot as they will need root room .

common morning glories like heavenly blue grandpa ott umm some of the ones like you buy at walmart and lowes i really wouldnt worry about specifics on as you can buy them agian. as far as color goes.

now if its ike japaneses ones then i may split them to see what they are and see if i like them enough to keep them seprate the next year as most do. then you can cross those with others if you feel like it.

just really depends on you. alot of people keep them seperate till the following year. enjoy them thats the main thing

Thanks so much everyone. I don't know why I am scared to do this.........I have never met a plant I didn't like!

You'll do great, Gail. Didn't you have good luck with them last year?

Yes, Joseph, but they were dimestore ones............these are all 'good ones'! ^_^

Cool...the good ones start out and grow out just like the dimestore sister species. Have fun!

I am going to start with the fancy pancy ones I got first..........want to see if I can have an early crop and then in the fall do it up even bigger with our cool weather.........

Gail it's my first year with the JMGs too. (Thanks to Becky and Ronnie) I am trying to keep them seperate and ID'd with stake and hemp twine. Mostly just to see which ones seem to do BEST here. With my heat in midsommer I will see if any perform better-or at all!! It may be it is just too hot, but my yard is enclosed and has a cooler damper temp then most around here~also I have some facing in the West heat (so I normally plant the most durable ones there ~dimestore, lol touche) but this year I am experimenting with them to see which do best in the sun. Have fun!

Darren, the only tree that I had where I put my morning glories last year had to be cut down to put up a new cattle fence. I was furious at my brother for doing that. So............I don't think mine will last into the hot summer. That is why I am going to plant them early and then later in the fall.

its hot here in sc in the upper 90s most of the time. water every morning and they will do fine. will look weepy but will do ok.

Morning glories must be contagious. My cousin called from Houston with some gardening questions and I told her I would mail her some seeds in the morning. She is very excited and is getting her chicken wire tomorrow for her fence.

Thanks imzadi ,
I never dreamed they would last in our summers but will try.......

excactly inzadi~! mine take the hundreds with a droopy attitude and bloom the next day~they wil be great.
