Hey!!

Clarkson, KY

You carton hatchers out there!! How does one turn a cartoned egg?

Sapello, NM(Zone 5b)

With a spatula.

Clarkson, KY

Jay, mine always roll OFF the spatula...ppppbpphphbhbhblplblplphl:-p

Sapello, NM(Zone 5b)

LOL

Lodi, United States

You tilt them gradually one way, then the other--propped up along a pencil or something. Simulating the way the automatic egg turner does it. Like they are on a roller coaster all leaning one way, then straight up, and then the other way. Capisci?

Clarkson, KY

No capsicum. Never seen one. Well maybe. Hmmm. I guess my pea brain can handle it. Always did 'em by hand on a rack before. But since I've been on DG I'm getting all technological and using egg cartons. Need to keep up with the new technology after all. Got 5 blue eggs in there, 1 pink, and one monster the size of Manhattan.

Sapello, NM(Zone 5b)

Frankenchicken...

Clarkson, KY

That's what I'm wondering...

(Zone 7b)

Grow i don't use the cartons and i don't feel like i'm behind it's just a personal choice is all.
My top hatch rolls the eggs from side to side and on the 18th day i just lay them on their sides to hatch.

Clarkson, KY

I'm using a carton this time cuz my cheapo-bater 5000 lets 'em roll all over the place during hatch thrashing...

Ferndale, WA

Hey there grow: If you hand turn your eggs? how often do you have to turn them. My little brinsea turns them every hour, but thats crazy. I know they don't need to be turned that often, so how often? Is every four hours enough? Haystack

Lodi, United States

Minimum three times in 24 hours evenly spaced out--preferably more, always an odd number.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

That's odd

Lodi, United States

It is always odd. That is why we are here.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Well, you could put them in the cartons on day 18 when it's time to stop turning.. ?

Lodi, United States

Interesting question. In nature eggs are more or less on their sides (large end slightly raised) and hatch that way. But in the cheaper incubators (Brinsea owners may sniff in a superior manner here) the automatic egg turner holds the eggs bolt upright, large end up and tips them gradually back and forth. So when I put them in the hatcher on day 18, I keep them upright in a carton. It works well. I am concerned that suddenly laying them on their sides so late in the incubation might disorient the chick that is preparing to prepare to pip. Has anyone put them on their sides to hatch after an upright incubation?

Clarkson, KY

I've done it once a day with success, suggest three...

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

I always (ok 4 times) use the store bought turner until day 18.. then I lay them sideways in the eggcarton.. I never thought of the poor guys inside going topsy-turvy.. Oh My!

Anyway, my hatches have been very successful until this last one.. but my thoughts on this one is.. the eggs may have gotten too cold.. I opened the inc WAY too many times.. I was impatient and helped the eggs along..
Everything I shouldn't have done, I did.. so I don't blame this one on the cartons at all.

(Zone 7b)

Me too Fran and i don't blame my incu it was me just human error.

Clarkson, KY

Since the inside of the Cheapo-bator 5000 is just wire mesh my little ones were able to flail their way around tipping and turning everyone else if I wasn't there to stop them (say if I slept or went to work or some other dereliction of duty). Thinking with a carton nobody else will get turned around during hatch which is why I want to try it.

Lodi, United States

My Golden Sebright, Calypso just hatched a Barnevelvder roo! I think I will ask her.....

Clarkson, KY

Ask her.....?

Lodi, United States

How she does it. She is a first timer, yet seems to have rare insights into egg hatching. Only problem is she hates my guts for stealing "her" eggs. She has been broody for two straight months now sitting on all the other big chickens' infertile eggs--despite the fact that Sebrights are listed as non-brooders. There will be no dealing with her now that she has successfully hatched a chick.

(Zone 7b)

Cat you had a sebright hatch a egg thats almost like a miracle LOL

Clarkson, KY

Ha!! What we get for trying to out-think a chicken!! Birds are definitely outta the box thinkers.... *snigger* snort* indelicate and incomplete covering of mouth to stopper escaping mirth***

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Congrats to Calypso.. Perseverance prevails! How exciting to find a chick under a hen that has been stationary for that long! Bet that was a shock!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

About the egg carton method? I cut them down so they are very shallow.. that would make it easier to lay them at least tilted somewhat on their side. I would guess that 3 days of laying still, even if not in the perfect position would be better than getting thrashed about. ?

(Zone 7b)

Grow are you doing your incu now i'm getting mine stable as i write this then in go the 150 eggs

Clarkson, KY

My thoughts exactly. They get rolled right as they are hatching. I always try to have them land w/ lettering up on day 18 so I can see whether they've been moved. Still...don't want 'em pipped and rolling.

Clarkson, KY

Put in 5 blues Sunday. And a pinkish. And a giant.

(Zone 7b)

Mine get thrashed or pushed when they hatch i don't think it really doe's anything just my opinion not meant to say it's wrong or anything.
I Don't have a choice with mine i can't put enough cartons in mine to hold all the eggs i hatch just not enough room

Clarkson, KY

I'm having visions of little ones getting rolled upside down and strangling or being unable to zip after getting turned wrong...

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Like when we were little and spun until we fell down?

Clarkson, KY

Exactly!!lol. But we were already well hatched by then...

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

(I'm 56 and not sure I'm done pipping...)

Clarkson, KY

You appear to be zipping from this angle...

(Zone 7b)

The chicks can turn in the egg thats how they zip i watched mine do that it's so cool to see them turning inside the egg.
Hatching is just amazing and thats why we all stay glued to the bater just watching them

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

I HAVE been doing some flipping...

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

This is so cool. WHEN I have my farm, I'll get an incubator.
