Spring 2009 - What's Blooming in Your Garden?
Thaniks Steve. I'm positively cranky because I think I'm gonna have to defer the 'Wakening of the Dahlias Festival' due to my freezing your face off conditions. You and all the others who are posting their spring bulbous things will help me get over it.
ps actually I'm still really cranky but I will fake being in a better mood.
Thanks so much for the eye candy Steve - many of my Fall- planted tulips and daffs are up but not blooming, but lots of lily noses here too (Asiatics) and these are several years in! We've had a pretty mild winter compared to usual - low here was 19F. Just waiting for the coldest Spring ever :- P Do your tulips have to be dug?
-Amy
Thanks Amy,
Well that's a mixed bag. As rule I do not consider tulips perennials here but last year I did have a bunch return from the year prior - mainly single lates. This year I planted nw ones but I have some beds where I see many leaves from last year coming up again including the bed with the second-year blooms. These bed all stay fairly dry during the summer and are very well drained. I am crossing my fingers to see if I get repeat blooms again this year. I do not count onthem returning the way they might up north, however. How about you?? Hyacinths on the other hand return extremely well for me year after year.
So far, short Snowdrops
Marilyn
Those are very pretty Kim - do you know the variety? I love the long, darker, contrasting trumpets.
A sure sign for me spring is coming each year is when Steve posts pictures. We still have four ft. of snow. But as always Steve, thank you for giving me a taste of things to come.
Polly
Thanks polly !
^_^
Steve, Love the 'Quail' I planted it last fall and I can't wait to see it in my garden in April. Lucky you, Feb. I have been adding many with scent and 'Quail' is suppose to be sweetly scented. Have you noticed a scent?
I ordered it from Buggycrazy this year along with many others. She has such a nice list always. She has deservedly made the The Watchdog 30 on DG recently. I love her lilies too. But I love any lilies and narcissus! Patti
Hi Patti, yes Quail as with virtually ALL Jonquilla division narcissi is VERY fragrant and I think you'll really love it. Mine have a scent as strong as any hyacinth so it is not a "subtle" fragrance, either. Very "sweet" and pleasant. I think you will love them - let us know how you like them when they bloom and if the fragrance is all you'd hoped for!
I agree on Buggy. So glad to se she made the top 30; she really deserves it an maybe it'll give her added motivation.
Here is "Golden Echo" - I just planted last fall. The "Quail" above are in their second season.
Oh Steve, I love those Erlicheers! Well I love all those you've planted in the garden!
That's beautiful, Kim :_) It has been really dry here I hope we get some rain soon.
I've a few Peonies too Steve, can't have enough of those beauties in the garden is for sure. Yes, those peonies take time to get established.
The tree above is this Sallix chaenomeloides:

Steve! Kim! Glorious! More!!!!
Donna
I've never known anyone who grew eranthis. What a cheery little guy!
Donna
claypa, that is really exciting, mine haven't appeared yet. Last year it was the third week in March, but it wasn't much of a show. Hopeful for a better one this year.
Steve, Nice to see 'Popeye', I saw it but not at a site I was ordering from last year. Think I will order it for the fall. Love 'Golden Echo', but it won't bloom until the 1st or 2nd week in May. No fair. Patti
That eranthis is a cute little flower, I agree!
Patti, Popeye is great - I have a larger clump on the northeast side of the house just starting to bloom but it's not in a much sun. Popeyes are rather expensive however at least at the source I found. I have neve grown Golden Echo before now but must say I am rally getting into the Jonquillas and planted several new varieties last fall.
Blue Giant hyacinths - I am sure I have some General Kohlers (a nice double Hyac. from OHG) mixed in here but maybe they're the ones just coming up since I can't spot any doubles. Planted these three falls ago.
Steve
Wow, Steve, your new garden is shaping up wonderfully! Please keep sending us your pics.
Donna
Thanks Donna! Yeah, the one in the back is new - the one in the front is a carryover from prior year(s) though I did expand the bed along the driveway and make it somewhat longer and about twice as wide. The Ice Follies are part of the old bed but the two pictures above that one are part of the new one. You have a good eye! ^_^
