It's 20 deg. F here today and I found this caterpillar crawling around on the sidewalk behind our house. We got 5" of snow yesterday. Any idea what it could be?
CLOSED: How can it survive this cold?
This caterpillar is in the family Noctuidae. Check out the image of a larva of the large yellow underwing, Noctua pronuba at http://tinyurl.com/c3bqdr - this species often is active during the winter when temperatures permit.
That's it - Thank you!
Definitely something I don't want around. It did end up freezing to death on the sidewalk.
