Sylvia, You've got 400 Hostas? I've got fewer than a dozen and it's a challenge to keep them going. I know this is OT for this forum, but you'll have to give me some lessons! To stay on topic, the cuttings that I rooted in the fall are starting to show some growth. I hope someday I'll have one as beautiful as gardenbudge's!
Sarah
Look at this!
That is lovely.
I am hoping I have blooms this year. It will be so fun taking picture. I wish I could find the pictures of the epis I had years ago before I get sick and lost all my plants.
Sandy
Beautiful flower Gary!
Yeah Sandy ... they were called Palmetto bugs! Something flew thru my house a while back... I dont know if it was Palmetta bug or a Bat! lol but thats a whole nother story ... we wont go there... lol
Sandy, how big a piece do you root? I usually cut mine in three to four inch pieces.
Sarah are you coming to the Roundup May 9th?
Sylvia, I won't be attending the CS roundup. I'm thinking about the one in Arlington.
Sarah, Do we have one coming up in Arlington anytime soon?
Anyway go to my site and see if you find something there to help you out...I dont understand why you are having problems.
You can email me. dmail me or call.

Sylvia If I am taking cuttings it depends on the size of the plant, I usually try for 4 inches but can go up to 6 inches. The bigger pieces have more reserve and seem to root better. If I have broken off the piece then I try to root what I have, I was able to get a 1 inch piece to root by laying it on top of the soil and keeping the soil moist under it.
Sandy the epi nut
yeah, I agree, thats what make it so much fun. There is another plant in Florida we use to lay it on the soil and watch it grow ... dont remember what it was ... that was 50 years ago. :)
This picture was taken quite a few years ago when we owned a house with a sun porch. This room used to drop down to about 35-40 deg F during the winter and the epi produced more flowers in the spring than it did anywhere else I have had it. When we took this picture there were over 400 blooms on the one plant. Unfortunately we don't have those conditions anymore and only get a modest display from them. Just shows what they are capable of given the right conditions.
Dave
Oh my!!!!!! With all this cold temp we have had maybe we will have great flowering.
Maybe I shouldn't have kept mine in the aviary! That is beautiful. Linda
Dave, what is the name of that beauty?. I would be interested in ordering some Epi's like that.
Hi! loved the pictures!
There is a large flowering cactus in a tree at Ellenton, Fl. exit at the info. center.
I loved to see it when I lived there..
Miss the sun and heat in MA. now but will eventually go south again!!
Dave, that is one gorgeous plant!!!
that looks kinda like the german empress I've been looking for...is that it?
Which Epi is that? It is absolutly wonderful, I would love to show that off in Texas. Dave how long before it blooms. btw Where N.S.
lismil you know your epi's . This is a 'Duchess Kaiserine' hybrid. I have had the original plant for about 25 years now. During that time I have rooted many cuttings but currently have only the original as we moved last spring and I could only keep a few plants. In all that time it has never flowered like it did when kept in that south facing sun-room. It blooms at various times depending on the light conditions. Up here in Nova Scotia, Canada the short winter days prevent blooming and it is not until we have 12 hours or more daylight that it comes into bloom.
This picture was taken in May 2005 with a digital camera rather than a scanned print.
Ohhhh! Just beautiful!!
Oh!!!!!! That is very beautiful!!!!
Wow, those are gorgeous. I love to grow pineapples like that too.......
