Look at this!

Smyrna, DE(Zone 7a)

This belongs to my brother and sister-in-law; I got pieces in the summer and they're doing really well, sitting in a window that gets full morning sun. The plant in the picture was in filtered sun and hanging on the front porch at my brothers house. I can't wait for mine to look like this and get blooms! I just today found out what it really is- my sister-in-law calls it "crocodile cactus". Either way, I love the blooms!

Wow! what a beautiful plant.

Marks, MS(Zone 7b)

I'm so glad you found your way over here. If you love that plant, you'll love it here...and will probably become addicted to orchid cactus!!! lol

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Great plant. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, That is gorgeous!, Linda

Welcome to epiville. Here you will find a bunch of addicted epiholics. You will find all sorts of info here. Most importantly how to hide that new epi you bought from friends and family. Like hiding it up a tree, behind and up in large bush and saying honey its a cutting of an old one. ( I'm rooting it for trade is a good one.)

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

It helps if you are single and then like me you can go hog wild!!!!!!!!!

Smyrna, DE(Zone 7a)

Thank you for all the welcome messages! I did take a look at some of what's posted here, and was inspired to learn more about these not so pretty guys. The flowers really make it worth having though.

wren107- I'm not single, but I go hogwild anyway. DH is sooo good about new plants coming home!

hayu, I have a lot of excuses for new plants and rooting it for trade is one of my faves! LOL

Again, thank you for making me feel so welcome! Is it true that some get seed pods? COOL! I wouldn't mind finding a purple one, or even a white one... hint, hint! LOL

Kathy

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Yes there are seed pods--if you have seven years to wait for flowers. LOL

Later in the year when I start to transplant some things there will be cuttings, or should I say broken off pieces. Again LOL

Welcome Kathy ... we are Epi lovers here in Texas too. So this Epi blooms in the day?
Last night on GVC or one of those shopping clubs on TV, they had these huge Epi plants with all those colorful flowers. I thought maybe the flowers were not real. They sold for 28.00 and 31.00. Now I know they are for real, I am wondering if I should get one.

Dallas, TX

So Sandy ... one Florida (Miami)girl to another, Do you need my address? lol

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Just remember it will be hard to ship a large plant, epis brake easily. Make sure they are not selling cuttings and but plants. $28.oo is not bad price for a large plant but is way to much for a cutting. And your plant will probable not have flowers on it and if there are they will probable fall off.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

We cross posted Yes if you wish to D-mail me your address I will put it into the folder that keep for future trades. I will be repotting my small flowering off season blooming epi soon. And there will more than likely broken off pieces.

Sandy, what colors do you have?

City_Sylvia, yes, this one blooms in the day time. Are there some that don't? I'm just learning about these!

Dallas, TX

Sandy I forgot to mention the size ... what they are sending you a four inch pot with three plants almost a foot tall. They were a pretty good size. I got some epis going here ... but nothing that color or that blooms in the daytime. You are right, it will take years to see it bloom. I also learned to let them get Rootbound ... they seem to bloom faster when the rootball is tight. Then again I never seen a bloom! But all my friends whom I gave a piece saw them bloom ... they took pictures to show me. :)

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I have over 200 epis so I have a LOT of colors. There is a list on this thread of what I have.
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/918011/

Most where bought last year so they are not big enough yet to take cuttings from but I am know for being clumsy so there is often broken off pieces.
Sandy the epi nut

Dallas, TX

Gardenbug ... this is my first time hearing of one that blooms in the daytime ...
Sandy do the Zig Zag plant grow around your area? Its another cactus.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Sounds like cuttings that maybe rooted. But not a large plant I get the one pictured below for 19.oo
Sandy the epi nut not a great picture but it is setting on the top of one of my old bences.

Kathy

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Here is a picture of Smarty pants Can't find a picture of Lemon Icicle but it is yellow with a white throat. This is also one of the places that I buy cuttings from but he sells out fast. LOL

Sandy ... I left Florida in 1961 ... and I never saw that zigzag plant bloom. The only thing I seen is the strings(? or hairs(? growing out of it. lol Its just amazing ... as a child you dont pay attention to plants that grow wild. ... like the Poinsetta, when I moved to Connecticut I could not believe people actually bought them ... and the Hibiscus ... we use to suck the sweet stuff out them. lol

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

My zigzags are new to me so I have not seen them bloom yet but the are night bloomers so I am not surprised that you never saw them bloom.

I was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida. I have loved and grown plants most of my life. Get the plant bug from my Grandmother.

Sandy the epi nut

Dallas, TX

I was born and raised in Miami ... when it was good ... and clean and you could walk down the street and pull fruit off the trees. mangos, avacados, mulberries, cherries, papayas,Kiwi fruit, but we called them something I cant remember. My fathers home was upstate Florida. ... as kids we would go there summers, my grand parents were farmers. Its where we introduced to peaches and watermelons. :)

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

yes much has changed all over Florida. Good watermelons are no more, I have not had a good one in a long time.

I may have found out the name of my pinkish epi.

wow...that must be an awsome exsperience, to be able to walk down the street and pull the fruit off the trees. I am so jealous of all the plants in florida....if it just werent for the hurricanes, it would be my dream spot to live.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Well there is also all the bugs, weird weather, sinkholes, and snakes---did I mention the BUGS!!!!!!

Dallas, TX

... and Scorpions! sinkholes?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I have never run into a scorpion. I think i mentioned sinkholes but did I mention LOTS OF BUGS!!!!!!

What do y'all think is my pink flower Real Pleasure??? My picture does not do it Justice.

Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Sylvia! You're into epis in addition to hostas? Good to see you here!

Sarah (we met at the October North TX plant round up)

Dallas, TX

yes you did mention sinkholes ... where are they?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

All over!!!!!! There is a large cavern under part of our city and one day it will fall, in. LOL

There is a very large and old one down in Gainesville, known as the Devil's Millhopper.

Marks, MS(Zone 7b)

yes, but, I have the bugs, weird weather, and snakes here too...sooo....in fact, other then the snakes, I love all the reptiles just as much as the plants lol

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I do not mind the snakes, nor most of the bugs, but the skeeters have been getting really bad.
Lismil you have not seen bugs until you have lived in Florida for a time. We have roaches big enough to ride. LOL

I am getting ready to sing off. Been a rough week, had a tooth taken out. Enjoyed talking with y'all.

Good night.
Sandy the epi nut

Marks, MS(Zone 7b)

lol...you havent seen giant roaches .....and centipedes till youve lived in NM. I swear those centepedes will chase you down for miles. they used to actually chase me and raise their stingers at me like a venomous snake or something posed to strike. And the roaches......I wont even go there.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Oh I will not argue about it at lest we do not have the large centepedes but we do have a bunch of imported reptiles.

I gave in an bought another epi. Black Satin is on its way. I know I said I would not get any more until I finished the benches. Please some one stop me!!!!!!

Marks, MS(Zone 7b)

if you wanna get rid of the lizards, just box em up and send em to me lol. Wren, have you ever thought about opening a business with all the epis you have? It would at least pay for more lol. I've been trying to think of a way to make an income off my plants since I'm loosing my job, but, my plants are like babies to me, and the bigger they get, the more I love em...it's like watching a child grow up...lol. Just taking one cutting kills me every time, but then, I guess it would help them get bushier.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I do not think I want to mess with taxes and all the other problems with a business. Besides I get enjoyment out of sharing.

Dallas, TX

Sandy... just get good accountant and a friend who is a good bookeeper ... to keep you organized. ;)
Sandy my Mom is from Gainesville/Waldo ... one of the other places we spent the summer as kids. In Miami we had Scorpions! ... very deadly ... huge ones, that ran around with babies on its back. last time I was home they had those huge Roaches ... that fly! lol

Hi Sarah! are you coming to the RU at College Station? yes I do love those Epi's ... they are easy to grow ... if I could just remember to bring them in before the freeze.:( ... this time I am putting them in hanging pots. :) ... and yes I do love my Hostas and is the reason I cant move back to Florida. What would I do with my 400 hostas?

Lismill ... get yourself a website ... you will be suprised at what comes to mind. ;)

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

No I still would rather just share. To much work to run a business. I am on disability.

We Have the Palmetto bugs-read giant roaches. But not to many since we get rid of the leaf mulch.
