That reminded me of my chickens when i was a girl I had this big white rooster and he wasn't mean too us he was ruff on the hens.
He would get on their backs and pull out their feathers he hurt a hen pretty bad so daddy gave him the wack.
We cooked him and it was the best chicken i ever ate because old meanie was gone.
I got me a beautiful BB red game rooster and he was so sweet i could pick him up and he was good to the hens too.
Daddy sold all my chickens when i got married said he couldn't look at them because they reminded him of me and i was gone.
Just a quick Thanks to this forum!
I remember carrying those little pullets around. I thought they seemed to like it since they'd come running to us, even after they'd been fed.
Good grief! I can't believe I want CHICKENS!!
I couldn't believe it when I wanted chickens either. It was looking at pictures of the Eglu that made me want them, and then I got an Eglu before I even got chickens, and it sat there empty for a bit. And then I wanted 3 chickens, and that was all. Now I have about 50 and about 90 in the basement growing up, not to mention having since acquired goats, sheep, llamas, miniature donkeys and ducks. Don't say you haven't been warned!
Makes me wish my Dad hadn't sold the family farm--180 acres--I could have chickens and goats and sheep and ducks and pigeons and baby goats and baby sheep and horses (again) and cattle (again) and....
oh my--s'cuse me--I think I hit my head when I fell out of my chair. I think I'm bleeding!
lol!
My Grandma told me the story of my Grandpa's prize RIR Rooster. He was the meanest rooster. Every morning my Grandma would feed the chickens and this rooster would go after her bare legs. She told my Grandpa how mean this roo was and he simply said, "Julia, just give him a little whack and he'll leave you alone." The next morning, she went out as usual to feed the chickens and that rooster started to go after my Grandma. She was holding a wooden measure she used to get the chciken feed. Well, she swung at that mean ol' bird and cold-konked him right up side the head! Over went the rooster. There he laid. My Grandma ran as fast as she could into the kitchen yelling, "Oh, Paul, I've killed your rooster!" They went outside to see him getting back up. He never went after my Grandma again! As a side note, this particular roo went after my Grandpa a couple months later-he made a great soup!
That is always how it works isnt it.
Seems to be!
Love the story and i've had a roo or 2 that had to be reminded who pays for the feed LOL
CMoxon The Barnyard Fairy... YEP THATS IT.... That is how I would describe her...
I thank all the chicken lovers for all the help they have given me in my first time raising chickens that have gone to roost in the sky... (Dang Burn Coyotes and ML)
Then all the help they gave me when I gave in to the cuteness of chicks and decieded I missed chickens so much I would try again...
Now I have 6 chickens thriving due to the wonderful advise I have gotten here...and I am sure I will continue to ask the intresting questions and learn more....
