Laurie's Garden Tour 2

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

I take care of someones dog or cat in remote AK and often I get a jar or two of smoked or canned salmon. Great for lunch and dinner. You are right it melts in your mouth. I use the canned salmon like tuna fish and eat it with crackers. That is how I got the Sable fish. It was given to me in Sitka. Can you imagine having to reel up over 6,000 ft of fishing line with about 12# of fish on the end. That is where the sable fish live and eat.

Um, no, Steve. Actually I cannot imagine that at all! LOL! Nor can I imagine canned salmon. It makes me turn a little green, I fear.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Canned salmon is not so bad, Pix. And if you mix it up with some onion, cream cheese, a little horseradish and liquid smoke, it's a nice last-minute fix for an hors d'ouevres offering at a cocktail party.

It is far better than tasteless tuna fish with sweet relish and Miracle whip. Try it you'll like it. You need to move out of your red meat and potatoes diet Melissa. Fish any way is excellent! The canned salmon is home made by the way.
This trip I am bringing home fresh tiger and other shrimp. (Prawns)

sofer, where do you catch these fish? I am a fish lover but hubby isn't too crazy for it. I like shark, tuna, halibut, calimari.

I catch the fish Mortswife all over AK. The shrimp I will buy from clients in Wrangell. There are fresh fish places all over alaska. The picture above was a trip with my father on Kodiak Island and that afternoon (4hrs) we 4 people boated over 500# of halibut, lingcod, and Salmon. Oh yes and a couple of yellow eyed rock cod.
This halibut was a Hen (female) that weighed 234 #. 4 of us barely could get it into the boat.

sofer, I have a nephew who has worked on a commercial ship off the coast of Alaska and Russia for many years. He loves it. Personally you can have all that water!

Pix, The type of canned Salmon that Steve gets in something we most likely see in our stores. Its a hole lot better, I do not like Salmon very much. Was forced fed Canned Salmon patties my whole life, or as my Mother called hush puppies, she was a bad cook on this one. But I have found I like the cans from BIL and have found some jerk salmon I like that he has sent. But have found nothing here with that flavor.
My DHs brother lives on Nak Nak Island, and has worked in the cannery there for years. They closed it a few years ago, I think

Seared ahi is my favorite. I would rather have that than anything else, including chocolate. Sear in a HOT pan in a little olive oil and serve right on top of a salad with citrus/olive oil/dijon/honey dressing. Oh my.
I didn't eat halibut for a few years because I was freaked out about the eye traveling through the neural tube when the fish changes position. now I eat it again but always think about that.....
I can hardly wait until the Farmers' Markets begin again!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Halibut, is my favorite YuMMMM
My dad always went Halibut fishing.

Eugene, OR

Don't know if I really have a favorite, don't like anchovies. My boys ocean fished off a barge in CA and we ate some good stuff then. My best catch was a 27# dorado in Mexico. Like to never got that one on board, they're fun to bring up though. They dance on their tails and turn the most magnificent colors, my jumped clear over the skiff once. I could do the Sea of Cortez, but not the ocean. Seasickness is not my friend. Trader Joe's has some good salmon, and like sofer and Kathy mix it with some cream cheese.......it is sooo good.

I'm making Sofer's orange juice/brown sugar salmon tonight for a date. It had better be good!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Oooooh. A date!! Judi, have fun. Hope it goes well.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

/Go get um Judi! Look out for a burst of emotions from your date. Liquid smoke is a passionate spice. I know he will love it. Start with a couple of bottles of Pino Grigeo. Follow with a dessert of cream cheeze and have fun throwing it at each other.

Eugene, OR

Hope all goes well Judi. I like sofer's suggestions.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Throwing it at each other? Mmmmmmm that might be interesting, and fun I think? or not.

Eugene, OR

Depends on the situation I guess. LOL

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

LOL

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

You have never seen the movie "Tom Jones" great passionate eating scene. It wasn't a "food fight" but it was a food fun time.

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

Sofer, I really think I am going to have to pass on dining with you. I'm just not sure I quite fit in with you style. Love you to bits, but...well, hmmmm.

Eugene, OR

Come on Laurie, a little adventure could be fun. LOL

(Judi)Portland, OR

Awww Laurie - it will add a new twist to your life...

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Laurie well I accept you where ever you are. See the movie 'Tom Jones'. You will have fun. Love you my friend. Steve.

Eugene, OR

Your such a sweetie sofer!

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

I've read the book, does that count?

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Laurie, this is for you.
I kept one of the browns in the GH cause I wasn't sure where I wanted to but It. Now it is telling me ' I want out of here' But I'm not sure to but him out in the cold as yet. But I do know now where he is going.

Yes the book counts, nobody is around to see you getting all excited. I am sure you enjoyed it. Hard to put down.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Hi Steve, you are the man LOL

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

Oh Tills, that looks great! So glad they did so well after the long journey. They are completely hardy, although your little rudimentary blossom may get nipped by a frost, I'm absolutely sure that you will have many more come through. May I suggest that you introduce it to the colder outdoors by putting it outside, but just give it a piece of newspaper over night for a couple of nights. that will just let it harden off having been mollycoddled in a greenhouse all winter. Hope you like it as much as I do.

Good growing Tils.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Thank you Laurie, Now you know my GH is not heated only by a flood light, they have had there share of cold. Per say LOL. I am so happy that all are doing great in there. I have lost a few, so sad but most are easy to replace. And I am a big mother hen when its time to get tossed out of the nest, 'Oh' my poor babies LOL. And did not think of a newspaper condo. But where she is going will have a big Cypress tree to protect her, along with some of her own kind.
My new bed will be Hells. and Heucheras and a few others.
Hugs
Tills

A note ( live is good, GD moved out) Happy

Oh, I like the idea of the cypress tree setting, and LOOK, they will have their own little glowing St. Francis!! Now he is going to have to have a word with the mice - the mice got into one of my cold frames last weekend and had a roaring time eating all of the leaves off of everything! I no longer have heucheras, I have nubs - stripped everything. They have been evicted!! And I have my fingers crossed that their friends and family don't locate the other two frames. D*&%!

(And tills, glad to hear about GD, hope she will be able to sort herself out - so sad to see a young life passing without direction).

UHHHHHHH, frustration!! Pix, where is that thread that has the link to the Cliff Booker's Photos of Switzerland? I have been in touch with Chris and he is going to try and id the tree that Sofer asked about, but evidently he posts a lot of photo series on the SRGC site and needs to see which set we are talking about. Help? I have searched (and so has he) but I can't locate it.

FOUND IT! Just in case anyone else wants to revisit here is the hyperlink http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/933399/

Ooooo Laurie, are the plants going to be OK ?????
Glad I have my mouse catchers, One a day or more. LOL

(Thank you, we are a peace again. The tension is gone)

James was it you who recommended the book 'Creating a Garden' by mary Keen? I found it for $3.99 and it is a great book. I'm really enjoying it. Thanks for the tip!

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

Hi Judi - Yes, it was me. I'm glad you're enjoying "Creating a Garden". It's one of my favorite gardening books. It's one of two or three books that keeps me inspired over the winter months. Aren't the pictures glorious? Almost all of Mary Keen's books are among my favorites. You might also want to look for "The Garden Border Book", another that I like a lot. Mary also is a regular contributor to Britain's Telegraph newspaper. You can sign up to get the Telegraph's gardening pages through RSS feed.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

James you are so intelligent, informed, well read, sensitive, communicative, and etc I just want the females here to see that many men are not monosyllabic, sit in front of tv Martians. Many of us live on Earth. LOL

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

Oh, pshaw! Now I'm blushing...

(Judi)Portland, OR

Well Sofer - that's the problem. Men are of the earth. Women live more in their heads. For example, a shiny new red car cruises past. The man says to himself "nice wheels. cool." but the woman thinks "ok it's red and I guess that's acceptable if you're a showoff, and why is it going so fast and I wonder if red is the driver's favorite color and is their house painted red and do they have a red sweater and is there some symbolism to having a red car, like is that person a communist" and so on. I'm telling you, it's exhausting being a woman!

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Wow! It is good being a man.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Judi, That must be why we get tired and get headaches.^_^
