Turkeys on my porch again!

Lincolnville, ME(Zone 5a)

I woke up 6:30 Sunday morning to the gobble of my tom "Charlie", who was trying to impress the ladies on my front porch. He ain't bashful. and posed for the camera. He has the most awesome tiger stripes in his tail as you can see in this photo.

Oh, thats a hoot - A gentle turkey named (Iron Mike) Tyson. LOL. Do you have any pics of him? Love to see turkey photos.....

He's a beauty - Is he a bronze?

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

he is a royal palm and just has the sweetest temperament, I go for a walk, I have 2 escorts among others but these 2 turkeys are on each side of me. I like to think they are guarding me but I know they are waiting for me to drop something they might like to nibble on. Tessla is the hen.

L2G - I don't pretend to know everything about turkeys, so please, please don't take this as me trying to tell you that you are wrong,
I'm just making an observation. I have never seen a RP that had white primary wing feathers before. Their genetic make-up is a black-wing based (b1), meaning that the long primary wing feathers should be mostly or all black. Tyson does appear to have a tail and rear that looks RP, but his breast, back, and wings don't appear like he is. If you look at the primaries, notice the striping? I believe he has some bronze blood running in his veins (not a bad thing).
Here is a good reference of some other RP toms: http://www.feathersite.com//Poultry/Turkeys/BRKRoyalPalm.html
Either way he is gorgeous and sounds like a good companion.

that is exactly what i thought also and almost said the same thing from what I have seen, He is to white. I got the pair for 25 bucks, never seen a real live turkey before so said what the heck. Scared to death of them when I 1st got them, now it is like Tyson will you move I can not walk thru you. I am not going to sell them nor their babies, just have them raise some babies for the freezer, these 2 will live out their life here as mom and dad.

In the future I would love to get some bronze, oh gosh I cant remember their name now, something breasted heritage breed anyway and raise them to sell.

No worries all is good :)

Something I really enjoy with the Tom's. He goes to strutting his stuff and "flaunts" that deep bass drum sound that you can feel. Wow that is power

Lincolnville, ME(Zone 5a)

They call it "Spit and drum" - like a "pffft" and then a drum sound. It gets you going in the morning!
You got a pretty good deal on them....Scott

Great Turkeys everyone. I have seen so many wild Turkeys this year. DH says no. (yet) hehehe That one on the porch is huge! wow!!!

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

wow, scott u r holding out on us,lol i didn't know u had em. he is absolutely gorgous!!!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

well I found an egg yesterday, it could only be one of 2 duck or turkey egg. It does not look like a duck egg not quite big enough unless it came from the mallard and I would think if it was a turkey egg she would have laid it in a nest. Picked it up and could see where there was 2 air sacks. For what it is worth I am going to toss it in to the bator.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Oh how I love a mystery!!! ;)

Lincolnville, ME(Zone 5a)

Silkie - I wasn't trying to keep anything away from you. I got all involved in this turkey breeding program, and am fostering breeding pens for some genetic research to try bringing back the extinct Oregon Grey turkey! It is fascinating. We think we can replicate it and bring it back! I would be a happy camper if I can play any role in the fruition of this project.....did I tell you about the peacocks yet?

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

the only problem is if it is a turkey egg they are incubated different. From the little I have read says the humidity is to be 90 to 100 percent. Did I read wrong?

Lincolnville, ME(Zone 5a)

I hatched turkey eggs with decent success in the past at the same humidity as chicken eggs i.e. 45% or a bit higher. That does not mean that you may have more or less success at a higher level, but I never heard anything about hatching any eggs at 90-100% b4.

(Zone 7b)

How long does it take a turkey egg to hatch i might try incubating some??

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

I re read the article again and it may be the "other" humidity. It also said about 45 % humidity . Takes 28 days.

(Zone 7b)

28 Days thanks Luvs good to see you on the forum you must be real busy hatching babys

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

busy yea no hatch for another week tho. Then gonna get it filled up again and start over. Busy building new coops.

(Zone 7b)

Well don't forget bout us here LOL

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh my gosh those are some gorgeous Turkeys !!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

They are so spoiled
Follow me every where.

(Zone 7b)

How do you keep them out of the garden and off the porch i'd love to have some in my yard but aren't they messy and destructive??

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

no not destructive at all more clumsy like will step on your foot. My chickens destroy more than them.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

They look so big all puffed up like that!!! WOW!!! DH said no way. :(

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

lol oh come on. they will not hurt the yard or the gardens. And when they do the spit and drum you can feel it inside ya.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

He is still adjusting to the chickens, I will attempt to ask again when everything seems calm. (Then wham!!!!!....honeeeyyyyyy, can I get a turkeyyyyyy? Just one...or two...they are really nice...)

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

lol and dont forget the ducks to

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Yes, there is so much I want and such a small coop and lean-to to put them in. awwww mannnn!

(Zone 7b)

You are forgetting the Pigeons and Doves he shouldn't mind these their not large and don't take up much space and alot of men more than women raise pigeons

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

true true yes she does need them

(Zone 7b)

I only know one woman that raises pigeons but i know at least 10 men who do LOL
