February IV Blooms
Do you do yours individully,then?
Lynn
Gail,
When Kim was here she made me count the big streps and not the babies.. I don't remember how many but it was like 204 or something like that... Now there may be a double or two in there... Also Jim's leaves coming up as I don't have most of them and also 22 others growing that just got put down... See what you started... huh?
Well folks as you will all be pleased that is it for the day.. shoot for the month from me... Leaf wanted to see a few blooms from me...LOLOL I am going out to take a picture of the 3 plants of the museum of Art I want to see if they are all the same... Be back in a few with a picture...
Hugs,
Susan
Lynn,
Are you talking to me? What do I do individully, then? If not me excuse me please... ^_^
Hugs,
Susan
Turtlechi...you are a lean green growin' machine!
Mortswife, a small episcia for a container...let's see, Silver Dust would be a good one.
Sue,
I mean't if you can't propagate in a box like that without losing leaves, how do you prefer to do it?
Lynn
Lynn,
Ok it is off the wall but is how I grow best.. I grow the leaves in water... I have a much better success rate that way then in any type of mix so I grow in water... Just put down 22 I think it was and they are in water... I have some about 6 I think that are rooting now... They have just started to get roots.. Then after they root I pot them up in my soil mixture and then they grow... Thats my story and I'm sticking to it...LOL I had about 30 root that way and pot up great and Jim's sent me about 40 some and you see what grew out of them...LOL
Hugs,
Susan
Susan,I often use water to root AV leaves and cuttings from plants, but I would never have thought you could do that with Streps.!
Lynn
I stick my av leaves in a glass with my soil mix and never cover them and I have lost very few .. Most will tell you that you can't root in water that the roots are to fine but I have never had a problem... I have sako, faith and a couple other Japanese ones rooting now and like I said I just put down 22 in water yesterday.. I will let you know how many I lose down the road... Most will root in two weeks....
Hugs,
Susan
Ha! Found it! It is Roulette Cherry. Looking a bit limp, so I have it sitting in a little water in a baggie on the fridge - so I won't forget about it again!
Very impressed with all your blooms, Susan!
Thanks Nic, I am happy with them also... After Kim came she understood why I was so upset when I had no blooms... She loved sitting in the kitchen well dining room with all the blooms... Now I am hoping she will have the same pleasure I have with her own plants....
Hugs,
Susan
Great bunch of photos. Beautiful flowers. I'm envious of them. I want them all. LOL. I have some baby violets that should be ready to trade soon as the weather warms up. I'm looking at all those beautiful streps.
You guys have just got to stop!!! I just can't stand another addiction!! They are all so beautiful!! Just how hard are these beauties to grow?
Melanie
Hello, My name is Susan and I am a addict...LOLOL The first 12 streps failed so I am now on 76 streps..... Oh I mean steps.
Susan
Lordy, lordy, lordy!!!!!!!!! You ladies are my inspiration. Some day when I grow up, I want to grow just like you guys!!!! ^_^ Beautiful. Thanks for a great picture show.
I definately think we need to start a 12 strep program!
Not yet!! You have to wait till my plants arrive. No fair to go through recovery before my addiction gets a good start again ^_^.
Lynn
Lynn,
Have you not noticed I am on 76 streps program?? Why would you think this is the time for me to stop?? LOLOL
Hugs,
Susan
Wow did this thread fill up fast with so many beautiful pictures!
Goldleaf I have a young Susie plant and I can't wait for her to bloom the red with yellow throat is so pretty!
Susan you weren't kidding when you said you'd gotten the hang of the AV's, very nice.... And I'm with Gail on that pink strep with the yellow throat, a real stunner!!
Jan I enjoyed your sinningia Super Orange on the last page, I just collected a couple of little seed pods off mine!
This is the little species Strep Cyanandrus that I grew from seed last winter. This was the first time it had two blooms at one time and if you look behind the blooms you can see the little point of a seed pod!!

I have had sinningia Darth Vader for over and year and never seen a bloom. It sat there for about 8 months growing more and more leaves but never blooming so I finally just clipped the whole plant off and left the tuber with maybe an inch of stem poking up like Bonnie always says to do.
It started growing again about 3 or 4 months ago and if all the buds that are forming on it now bloom it will have been worth the wait! LOL
~Brenda
To think that you are growing those nice bushy kohlerias in Idaho makes me know I can't grow Kohlerias!!! She is a winner as is her grower!
Isn't that fun to take a tuber like Darth Vadar and see that many blooms at once!
Great pictures Brenda! If mini Kohleria Flirt is small,I will add it to my wish list.
Susan,I think maybe 176 steps would work better...^_^. They say if an addict trys to quit toooo fast there is a very painful withdrawal. Wouldn't want a sweetheart like you to go through all that agony...LOL.
Hugs,Lynn
That little species Strep Cyanandrus is the cutest! Not only are the species adorable but important to keep them going.
You will flip when you see Darth Vader's blossoms.
Lynn I'd say that K Flirt is at least half the size in growth habit of the rest of my Kohlerias but the blooms are good sized and even bigger than a few of the big growers. A very nice trade off!
Gail I think it was Keyring that was saying the Kohlerias need high light or maybe it was Goldleaf ... one of the experts anyway ^-^ Now mine are doing much better after a few months on their own plant shelf with their own light. Bushier with more blooms instead of long and viny with blooms on the ends like they used to be for me. They are in my laundry room and that is a very cool room in my house, far away from the wood stove
This is K Hirutsa which took forever to bloom for me.
~Brenda
Whenever I see Poochie with her big floozy blooms I think of a Southern lady in her big skirts relaxed back on a hot day with a mint julep in her hand ..... don't know why but that is the image that bloom has always conjured for me. Maybe I'm just nuts! LOL
I do love that Cyanandrus and figure no matter what my circumstances in the future this is one strep I will always be able to grow as it's so tiny and grows well in it's terrarium under the florescent lights in my kitchen.
What's amazing to me with the species streps is to think that if you were in the right place in South America you could come across this exact plant growing in the wild. You'd have to really be looking for the little thing ..... but it would look just like this in it's natural environment.
Boy you guys are getting to listen to my mind wander this morning aren't you? LOL
OK, one more picture and then to work for me ............ K Mother's Lipstick, the kohleria that made me have to try and grow them!
~Brenda
I am simply amazed that they are growing in the utility room where it is cooler. I know that Thad Scaggs grows them in zone 10 outside all summer.........you are just a great grower.........what else can I say about your kohlerias!
It is usually a real salmon color. I never tire of Salmon Sunset.
bemedel..that is so funny you referred to Poochie as a floozie because I said the same thing the other day to gail. It needed repotting and the weight of the blooms were bending down the flower stalk and I said she looked like a "windblown floozie". ^_^
I think the cooler temps keep the kohlerias more compact. Mother's Lipstick is one that can get lanky very easily. Yours all look perfect.
Have you sown the species strep seed?
A very cheery and pretty Salmon Sunset, kivit!
thx leaf!
salmon sunset grows very cose to the lights-almost touching them. as gail says, it is usually a real salmon colorwhich this one WAS until I put it under lights
