Check out this website - it tells you all about the Volcano.
I'm not really up-to-date on the facts....

Hooooray, Paula!!!! Great photos...
The 'correct' name for the Big Island is HAWAII. It is the Island of Hawaii and is the largest and the newest. On the west side of the island where Paula lives, the beaches are white sand and on my (east) side they are black sand --- indicating they are made of lava rock. The website Paula gave you is our 'barometer'...it is where we go after every earthquake to find out where it was and how strong it was.
On our island we have the 'dry side' (Kona), the 'wet side' (Hilo area), the volcanos, the North end which has Parker Ranch (was the largest working ranch in the US...cowboy 'arts'/rodeos etc. started there with Spaniards/Portuguese who were brought in to handle the herds and then went to the mainland to spread their knowledge and skills). We have all but two climate zones on our little island: glaciers and waterless deserts.
Amazing and Educational Thread! Thanks so much for sharing your area's of the world!
Wow! Fantastic paintings too! You are very talented! I know nothing about art but can only imagine how beautiful your paintings must be in person if they look that good on a website! Great job!
And the bad side of my island. This is the result of what is called a Calima. A Hot wind blowing from Africa which brings with it a sand storm hundreds of miles from the Sahara which can last for days. This is my usual view from my house.( note the volcanoes in my back yard Carol )

Auwe....I remember those sand storms when we lived in the S. of Spain...grit everywhere!!!! But never THAT thick... Then again, you are the first line of defense!
So, Dom...how is your island's elec. generated? Do you receive "city water' or are you on catchment? How far is your drive to town?
Electricity is from 2 power stations fueled by imported oil tankers, water is in the streets...tho not my house as Im in the countryside, and thats from de salinization plants, so not that green..My water is lorry delivered into 2 big underground wells. Do you have natural water reserves on the island? There is none here, and the agriculture is/was solely dependent on the rains coming and it being stored underground in tanks
Dom,
Your paintings are beautiful beyond words. Wow!
Doug
There is underground water here...but limited and really dicey in places where toxins from the sugarcane days have settled. We are on watercatchment...10,000 tank (above ground with plants all around it to disguise) catching runoff from the roof. The water passes thru various filters (including UV) before it enters the house. Sweetest water in the world! We have never run out of water...we get nearly 160" yearly of rain.
Energy is by Geothermal (not enough, tho) and by coal and oil burning generators. We pay horrendous elec. bills...nearly 50cents and kwh.
Your house? Gardens? Pictures?
Thanks Doug....appreciated.
Ill sort some pics out tomorrow.but, be warned....I bought an old farmhouse, nearly 300 years old.completely legally, and have hit beurocratic red tape as soon as I applied to restore it...long story, not for here, so I have been unable to do anything so far.......so just dont think I want to live like this...but I have nice plans.......buried somewhere.:))
Hawaii is the largest island, right, but much quieter than others? I have people here who chlorinate their water..then complain their plants don't grow well... Malta, I know, has now problems with its underground fresh water supplies, that salt water levels are rising, and the sweet water that lays on top is slowly becoming contaminated. Theirs is in vast underground caves, which they bring up via wells...Water , which is taken for granted n so many places, really can become a scarce commodity very quickly

Some folks, here, think that by throwing in alot of bleach they kill the bad stuff in their water tanks. Well...... hmmmmm....they would have to churn/move the water for about 10mins+ to get the clorox dispersed...and even then, it starts to flash off and many are either blasted by a squirt of clorox or get nothing...water systems are complex....water is complex.
Dom...what a disappointment. Isn't there anyway you can restore your house and claim it is an environmental project prescribed by the doctor? Or something?
