Hi!
We came from this thread: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/944998/#new
What have you wintersowed so far -part three.
Yesterday, I sowed more containers. I hope to do another 4-8 in the next 2 weeks and then be done.
Burpee Pacific Giant Delphiniums
MORNING GLORY MT FUJI MIX
LARKSPUR - Annual
Pumpkin - Jack Be Little
Woo Hoo! I just checked my jugs and today I have sprouts of Clarkia and Salvia viridis! That makes me the following with sprouts:
Bronze fennel
Georgia aster
Gaillardia, mixed
Oriental poppy `Brilliant'
Clarkia confetti
Salvia viridis
I'm sold on this winter sowing! Wowzer!
I too have more sproutlets, one brave tendril from a sunflower, three Cosmos, many many more poppies, as well as the spinach, kale, and onions. Spinach just barely beginning to show the tiniest leaves above cotyledons...... and since the latest sprouts are tender babies I may have to start covering them at night, -- we are still in the 20s for a good while out there.
but. I am also going to do later sowings of those annuals, just in case. ;-)
Kyla: I like your term, "sproutlets." Mind if I adopt it? ^_^
Help yourself. ;-)
I know it is too early here in zone 5b for sproutlets(I also borrowed hope it is okay) but am enjoying all your successes. Mine should start showing up in a few weeks.
Hang on, Indy, you'll soon have sprouts! Those Clarkias were only sown on 2/1/09 and here it is 11 days later and, presto, sproutlets! Same thing with the Salvia. Excellent germination on both of them, too. Oh, this is so wonderful! No more sowing seeds indoors and filling up counter and table space.
Yeehaa (doing victory dance)
I'm dancing right there with you. I'm up to 76 different containers germinated! This is a blast!
ok, don't panic.. it's early ..
Mine aren't sprouting!!!! (breathe, breathe)
My first one's were WS'd Feb 1.. a little early yet for sproutlets? Everyone agree, please!!! LOL!
My first were WSed Jan 10th so I got an earlier start and I'm in a warmer climate, zone 8b. I wouldn't worry one bit. Jill (critterologist) says you can even sow in spring and summer, so I'm sure you'll be dancin' soon!
Edited to correct Jill's name!

Don't sweat it yet ClanCampbell, they know when its time.
Oh, yes, you are just fine. My first went out there on December 19th! And some of what is sprouting I wonder if it is too early, went out j ust a bit ago thinking, do I need to put a sheet over some of th ese? decided not to.....
I think I has sproutlet envy LOL... MerPeg only lives about 5 miles from me and started hers 2 weeks before I did.. I darn well better see green on my birthday, Feb 28th!
(like how I snuck that in there??) ^_^
I never see sprouts until March, and then only if it's warm. Mostly it seems they're more toward the end of March.
The southerners always have sprouts way before we do up here. They'll sprout when it's their time---- here.
Karen
Yes, very well done! And I agree, sproutlets by birthday are definitely called for !
No worries, ClanC, I started on Feb 1, too, and I am sproutletless as well.
Kyla, your new term is a ray of sunshine on my day. Now I never have to worry about mispronouncing cotyledons again!
GreenerBeaner
hahaha well as for pronouncing, I would think "sproutletless" might be a bit more challenging than "cotyledon"!
Goodness, glad to be a messenger of cheer, maybe I ought to make up words more often, LOL!

Is there a way to copy an image from the plant files to my journal entries?
lynn-- what i would do is.... if you know the "owner" of said image, i'd ask them if you could use it in your journal.
then -- you "right click" | Save File As ... and save it to your computer ... then you will have to upload it to your journal.
I have actually not put any images in my journal [as i'm really not using it] but i'd assume that you could just upload like we normally would for posts.
I think I bought the wrong paint pens. I bought Elmers Paintastics Paint Brush Pens -- it rained last night and it all washed off. Now that I'm looking at the package I can see that it says "Washable". Good thing I labeled everything with a Sharpie, too.
Ahh bummer sand. I'm glad you did the sharpie, too!
I suppose there are no sproutlets here. All are covered with 20-40 cm snow.
Did some more WSing today:
Albizia julibrissin
Alcea rosa jet black
Alcea rosea 'Chaters double yellow'
Cornus florida
2 Daylily Crosses
Rudbeckia Cherry Brandy
Rudbeckia Prairie Sun
Larkspur
Checked my pots (indoors) this morning and I have dill and chives which have sprouted. Can't wait to get home and see if any more of the WS jugs have sproutlets in them!
Hey Hemo, what are you going to do if it gets really cold again - with all your sproutlets? I checked my wintersow containers yesterday because it warmed up a bit, and was very relieved to see that nothing's sprouted yet. I don't want to see anything green in my containers before April!!!
If I understand the principle behind WSing, it is to allow the same cycle they would experience in nature of freezing, warming, freezing, etc., so I'll do nothing but let nature take its course.
Wow - I have to go back and get caught up.
I did get a paint pen 1 lonely paint pen. With tax it was $6.79 so I could only afford one :( Oh well. I got a extra fine tip and it was a bit bigger than some of the ones I was looking at. I find Michael's to be very expensive. Don't know if they are more affordable in the states.
I had a thought and went to the dollar store and found a pair of laundry markers that were only a dollar for both. Now that is more in my budget. How pathetic is that. I wonder if they will work since they aren't supposed to wash off. I am going to use my paint pen and when it runs out then I may use the laundry markers. I am going to try a laundry marker and just put some nonsense writing on it, then leave it outside and see what happens. It may fade out in the sun but it is worth trying.
Thanks to all for your great support.
I really have to catch up.
Hugs Elaine and Otis
Holy Cow.... what's the exchange rate from US to Can$ ? ours are about $3.50
as i said on a different thread.... I may get a bunch of these just to keep on hand for those who can't find any.
Elaine: That's almost as much as I paid for 5 paint pens from MarkingPenDepo, with shipping! Have you checked them out? Can't believe there's that much difference. I found some at Hobby Lobby, but don't know if you have those there.
Good idea about the laundry pens, though. Let us know how they fare for you.
Angie
We have 40% off coupon for Michael's. They come in the Sunday paper every other week.
No such coupons here. The exchange rate is about 20% or our dollar is worth
80 cents to your $1.00.
I did check out that site but you have to have a $10.00 minimum and I am one of the few who doesn't own a credit card. Could have asked DH to use his and just given him the money. I didn't see their shipping cost. That was before I went to Michael's. I think a 5 pack at Michael's was $24.99. Of course you add on 13% sales tax on top of that.
I may end up ordering from that site in the future. Thanks for the link. Can't believe what a rip-off Michael's is up here.
Will let you know how the laundry markers hold up outside. I figured it was worth a try.
I was planning on getting some more WSing done this weekend but I am going to have my 17 month old grandson staying with me from tomorrow at 1 p.m. until Tuesday around noon. Can't get a darn thing done with him here. My DD broke her right hand and it is very difficult trying to look after him right now.
If I'm not around I'm being held hostage by my busy grandson
Happy Gardening
Hugs Elaine and Otis

It is going to be a pretty summer!
Hemo, I just got a shipment of Sharpie Paint pens from Marking Pen Depot today http://markingpendepot.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=12&HS=1 .
I love them! Excellent pens, and they write nice and fine. I think I will be using these a lot! Great prices on them, too!!!!! I purchased 7 of them. I might get a bunch to give out at my RU this summer or for door prizes. I think everyone should have these!!!!
Karen
Wow, Lynn, that's a nice long list! Yes, you will have a pretty summer. I plan to have a pretty one here, too, with all the stuff I'm WSing.
Karen
I used an Elmer's paint pen today. I sure hope it will stand up to the elements. I read somewhere today about Elmer pens washing away in the rain. I hope these aren't the same ones.
Karen, are you hosting the RU at your house? I am hosting the PNW RU at our house the weekend of Aug 29. I have never even attended one before. What all are you planning to do?
I need to go back and look to see what you have WS. Do you have a spreadsheet?
Laundry markers are probably about the same as regular Sharpies -- a label stuck down into the soil, or writing on the bottom of the container, where the sun doesn't get it, should last, but otherwise not so much.
Lynn, check the package label on your paint pen and see if it says "washable." Hopefully it says "permanent marker, keep away from small children." LOL
O/T to mention that I've hosted a couple different types of DG gatherings and written articles with some tips that might be useful. It's fun to see more & more get-togethers being planned across the country as our membership grows!
Critter, I think I read one of your articles awhile back (before I had volunteered to do the RU). I will go back and reread. Any advice will be helpful.
I am meeting another DG gal on Monday and we are riding together to meet up with a group of PNW members at a local nursery (owned by a DG member) - Dragonfly Nursery.
I am really looking forward to meeting everyone. The PNW group is a very active friendly bunch, the Roundup should be a blast.
Darn, I threw away the packaging from the pen. The pen does not say washable, it does say permanent paint pen, sooooo I am hoping it will be ok.
I am probably being redundant, but I am marking inside the containers, outside in a couple of place, on the duct tape, and a marker inside. Plus, they are all numbered in all of those places, I have a notepad that I am writing in as I do each container, and THEN, I enter the info with the Container number in my journal on DG. I am going to keep each label that came with the seeds or the packet itself in a 3 ring binder so I can reference who I got them from, etc. Some of the seed packets have such good info on them, it would be a shame to not utilize all of the hard work involved in creating them. I am also printing out the DG page on each plant to put in the binder with the seed packet/label. It's a lot of work now, but it should be easier next year. Does this make any sense, or am I just making too much work out of this? I really don't mean work, because I enjoy researching and learning new things.
OT, any recommendations for the metal plant markers - probably the 10 inch? Are there ever any co ops on these? I would like to get about 150.
Thanks
Karen: I've enjoyed using mine and I'm glad you like them, too. Out of the 5 I ordered, I sent 2 each to JonnaSudenius and Potagere, since they can't get them in Europe, so I only kept 1, but in the meantime I bought a green paint pen from Hobby Lobby and I love using it on the soda bottles because it really stands out whereas the black one disappeared.
Redundancy is good! I like EON markers, and there have been some co-ops for them in the past.
