Beach Patrol

North Augusta, ON

Does anybody watch this? I have relatives in California always telling me to come visit and go to the beach. After watching this program, I'm not sure I want to. Is it really as bad as it's portrayed? Or is it just giving the beaches of California a bad rap?

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Haven't seen nor heard of the program, but just like the towns and cities they're in, beaches vary.......you might not like Venice Beach, but you'd love La Jolla....there are small town coast beaches and city beaches...something for everyone!

What program are you referring to? It all depends on what you are looking for. They have been developing the beach communities, but there are still some nice places to live. I'm fond of Oceanside, but I grew up here. I also like Leucadia, Carlbad, parts of Del Mar, but can't afford La Jolla. Haven't been to Venice Beach for a long time, so don't have an opinion on that one. I will try to send a photo or two later. Got to go take some. This is of the sunset, taken last September here in O'side.

Sorry it is such a bad/blurry photo. The colors are true though. Be back with better photos later.

Beautiful beach!!

The program is like Cops, but they show the beach patrol people. I've seen nothing but crowds, parties and lots of drunks. Not very appealing at all!!

Emerald Hills, CA(Zone 9b)

I'm not familiar with this show, but I'm a native Californian.... There are wonderful beaches along the entire coast of California. Some are very crowded, especially during the summer/vacation season, others are uninhabited. I have never felt any sense of danger on a beach in California. Like all situations, common sense should prevail - ie. wandering the beach at night, on an uninhabited beach, may or may not be safe. Many of the beaches are state parks & are patrolled regularly by state personnel.

I just saw your recent post threegardeners. It sounds like a spring break type of phenomena - also found in Florida, Mexico, etc. - lots of partying college kids. Trust me, that is not the typical California beach! I've NEVER (and I'm 55 & went to a college on the beach) seen this type of beach situation. Internet research or DG friends could help you identify beaches to see or avoid.

Depends on when and where you go. I prefer the beach when the tourists go home. We usually come down here for a couple of weeks at the end of Sept. when the tourists have gone home, and in February. I love the beach when it hasn't been all trashed up and covered with people. We bought a timeshare, just so we could have access to our local beaches. In Sept. the water is still warm, but in February it is a beach comber delight. Usually the temps. don't change that much about 10 degrees (F) between daytime and night. At home, it can change 50 degrees from daytime temps to nighttime temps.
Will have photos soon. Am sending a photo of the timeshare where we stay. Once again this was taken last Sept. Usually the only people we see this time of year are the locals, and the surfers. LOL!
Enjoy!

Those programs are going to look for the worst situations to give people something to talk about. Just like the animal rescue program. You'll never see the beautiful quiet Sunday morning beach where you can walk or sit and watch the surfers (they are very interesting), the dolphin moving off shore, the birds, and then walk to a local cafe for breakfast. Just like you will not see people who take care of their animals and lead a normal life.

So, when are you going to come visit, SW? LOL I wouldn't want to tear you away from your winter haven.

North Augusta, ON

No idea when I'll ever get to visit...a winter break sure would be nice though. Some day!!

It is nice to know that the program in question isn't a true example of beach life.

What part of Calif. are your friends from? Calif has a huge coastline and many large sandy beaches as well as scenic cliff beaches.

A winter Sunday morning walk just south of Oceanside. Note the hordes of party-goers in the background. LOL

Yep, stay away from places like Newport Beach, Muscle Beach (Venice), Huntington Beach, and of course Malibu, and things are a lot mellower. This is a photo I took yesterday in Oceanside. More surfers in the water than people walking on the beach. Actually this photo has the most people in it that I saw all day! LOL!
