This is how I do it: Wait until the tomato fruit has begun to rot on the plant. Take the shriveled tomato, place it on a saran wrap-covered paper plate, cover with another sheet of saran wrap, and squish all the seeds out with the palm of your hand. Remove the top sheet of saran wrap and put the paper plate & seeds on top of the frige to dry. Don't forget to label them. In the spring, I start them directly in the soil where I want them to grow. I had volunteer plants in the ground this year, where rotted fruit had fallen last fall.

HI Kay

Thanks for your help. Hopefully this will work.

Good advice. The thing with tomato seed is getting all the pulp off the seed, as it contains germination inhibitors. I believe letting it "rot" off would work. The method I heard of was to let the seeds go "bad" in a cup of water, (it will have a foul aroma)then rinse well, and drain. Let dry. Tomato seed is viable for about 4 years. I find also that the "voluteer" plants far outshine the ones babied along under lights to give them a "head start". Try a few direct sown as well! John
