Thanks so much for the warm welcome!!! I accidentally ran across this site a few days ago, and your are right it is big, but GREAT!!! I am a stay at home mom/ bookeeper for our at home business, and my hobbies are machine embroidery and gardening. My husband and I just moved to the Clarkston area a few years ago, and 2 years ago was my first big vegetable garden. I have always tinkered with container gardening and perennials, but never having a huge garden of my own. And I love it!!!! Last year I germinated all of my own plants, luckily I have an old ugly michigan basement.... which works great for germinating. I hung lights, provided warmth and my plants did great. My husband built some raised garden boxes outside, and I use the square foot gardening method. I try to stay as organic as possible with my garden, but cant always achieve that. I have planted over 300 perennials in my yard since we moved in... there wasnt even a bush or a random tulip here.... and alot of them I aquired at garage sales or craigs list... wish I would have known about this site then..LOL

A few months ago I went to a botanical garden, and a hitchhiking pod took a ride home with me on the back of my sweater..:). it took me a few months to find out what the seed pod is, and that is how I ran across this site... and feel in love with it!! so much info...

Thanks again for the warm welcome and I am sure I will see you both soon in the Michigan Gardening Forum!

Welcome Mandie!

Thanks so much for telling us about yourself and your garden. We moved to AuGres from Garden City downstate a few years back and we also got into vegetable gardening in a big way. We're now retired and can't wait for spring to dig in the dirt. I also plan to start my own plants this year. I finally found a place for my plant growing unit out in the bunkhouse. :)

So, what did your pod turn out to be?

Hi again,

The pod turned out to be a Uncarina Grandidieri tree ( I think it is also called a Mousetrap tree). It is indiginous to Madagascar, so I put a thread in the Tropical Zone Gardening, hoping they may have some info on germinating the seed inside of it... apparently these plants can grow in extreme hot tempuratures, and are seen in california and sometimes florida, which is where I was when it hitched a ride on the back of my sweater....

heres a pic of it.. I have found lots of info on how to propogate one from a stem of a exsisting plant, but so far no info on how to germinate from the pod, or the seed in the pod.

This forum is great.... I feel so welcome!! Thanks for asking!

Hi michigander,

I am putting in the usual aswell, I think the only odd thing I grow is Loufa gourds, my friends love them for christmas gifts. They are persnickity though, last year I had a real hard time with them, but this year i germinted them indoors at the same time as I did my tomatoes and they are huge already! Cant wait to get them into the ground! they are actually wrapping themselves around my lights hanging over the table.... LOL, I have never done potatoes before, and I am going to try them this year.... do you have good luck with a particular kind??? Mandie

Lachine, MI

Hi Mandie! I grew loufa's once- only had a few make it as heavy frosts set in here a tad to early some years-lol
As for potatoes, i enjoy red pontiac...they are an early type.
sounds like you have a great growing area or set up!
One year i was trying to keep all my new babies warm( that i grew from seed) and was using a water heater from a waterbed and a electric mattress cover over a folding banquet table with a shop light attached to a garment rack...kind of reminded me of the beverly hillbillies-LOL
If your short on space in your garden- i've companioned planted potatoes inbetween my rows of sweet corn- as they grew together the corn hid the potatoe plants from the the potatoe bugs- it was a good crop!
Post pic's whenever you can its a fun way to share!
If it stops raining today(thats a big if) I wanted to take some pics of my species tulips that are blooming now- too early for my veggie garden yet-lol ;-)
