dreams- what do they mean?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Do you think they mean anything? Some of mine could easily be interpreted in a somewhat logical fashion and others are just nuts. The nuts ones can be funny- I think they are made of random connections of bits in your brain. What do you think?

Alexandria, IN(Zone 6a)

They can be throw backs often to yesteryear like school or at work......still trying to work out frustrations and such, Other times they relate to snips of the past day or two. Occasionlly they have spiritual meanings.

In my dreams it never feels cold or hot or windy!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

In other words, all of the above at different times?
You know, I can't remember a windy/hot/cold dream either

What started me on this was my dad the other day descibing how he has dreams in which he is impressed by th amount of detail he sees in structures, statues...It wuld be an easy interpretation to say that it's connected to his very failing eyesight.

I have dreams that take place in the same location. For example, I dream of this ski resort and I know the different runs! There is a train, not like an Amtrak train, but rather a quaint one like the ones you see in San Francisco, a shuttle type to move the skiers here and there. I don't think I am uncomfortably cold, but I do remember being all snuggled up

In another series of dreams, the familiar place is a shopping center. I can't tell you names of stores, but i know how to get to the shoe store, a general dept store a la Macy's, candy store, parking garage, even what the indoor landscape looks like and where situated! The mall architecture is modern and it is never too crowded or trashy looking. If I ever find myself in these locations during my waking hours, I will most likely freak out, lol.

In still another set of recurring dreams, I dream of my high school love. We are about to kiss and something/somebody interrupts the marvelous event every time. This boy never gave me the time of day and for years and years I would have this unfulfilled romantic dream. They finally stopped after I met my present husband, my true dream man.

One day I realized that I hadn't had the romantic dreams and out of sheer boredom decided to google "Sammy". I found a pic of him, he was a director or something or other and he didn't look that hot. However, in all fairness, he would probably say the same about me if he saw me today with all the extra pounds, lol.

I am fascinated by dreams but sometimes I think they're meaningful and sometimes I think they're just crazy.

That's an interesting article! Thanks for posting the link. I dream almost every night and in color. Some are interesting others are downright scary. Trying to find interpretations can be as mindboggling as the dream itself LOL!

dreams are problem solvers. the content of the dream may just be an emotional outlet and they are often symbolic so what they are saying may not be obvious.
Psychologists sometimes recommend that you keep a little notebook by your bed and write down the dreams as soon as possible when you wake up. that way you can see recurrent symbols and activities as they happen over time.

I used to have flying dream where I would narrowly escape certain death or someone trying to grab me. There was a trap relationship I was trying to get out of.

Some dreams are packaged in symbols. The horse is often an authority figure. A childhood dream was a horse and cart tipped over in the ditch. across the road was the mail box stuffed with a pig. when I pulled the pig out of the mail box a rabbit scurried away.

My dad was a very authortarian person and he was the mail man. I finally figured out the rabbit was me trying to get away from my family and grow up and live my life!

Would I be a stuck pig or a rabbit?

psychologist Karl Jung worked extensively with the symbols of dreams.

If you look at your dreams you will meet a new dimension of yourself! Be prepared to laugh when you meet this new dimension of yourself.

I usually don't think I dreamt at all. Sometimes I know I had a dream but forget it quickly. My 18 y o son just had a dream where our whole neighborhood was filled with signs, but excesssive unnecesary ones, like a driveway with a sign warning about cars coming out?? so maybe he thinks home is full of too many warnings and unnecessary precautions!

Greensboro, AL

Or too many rules and regulations generally for a teen-age boy?

I think if you don't remember your dreams especially its a sign that all is well. But, you can train yourself to remember long enough to write it down with the notebook method.

I used to have bad nightmares. I saw a therapist who helped me get rid of them. She told me to consciously think of the dream, add a way out to the fear and visualize it. She said you mind goes through things and will automatically add the new scene in and it worked! I had dreams of a large black dog chasing me. I would have it any time there was stress. I would wake up crying and shaking. This went on all my life anytime I was under stress. Turned out she got me to recall that a large black dog killed my puppy when I was 5. I thought of it running toward us and then added a fence with a sturdy gate to close. I have not had that nightmare again. I have used the same technique to stop other nightmares.

Greensboro, AL

what a neat idea! And you get control of an otherwise uncontrollable situation. And control you did not have when you were 5. Empowerment.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Very interesting. The sleeping brain, creatively displaying your problems in new ways, for you to perhaps solve. So I feel that maybe the dreams I thought were totally random, weren't random at all. I used to have school frustration dreams, many years after graduating, that could have related to a number of everyday frustrations. Last night I was dreaming about going to a farm and I was there along with a bunch of other people trying to get manure for the garden. Early this week, same theme with being at the back end of a huge restaurant trying to get their waste greens for compost. Having these at the same time as filling out taxes and all this stuff about the economy in the news.......

In school I had dreams that I couldn't get to the final exam.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Gosh yes!!! School dreams are my most frequent theme. Don't have the books, can't find a room, don't know my schedule, classes changed on me--More trouble than school was in real life. Maybe school, being what you "do" for so many years, is a conveneint setting for the brain to use.

Greensboro, AL

If you don't take the final exam the whole year's work is ruined. You can't graduate.
You can't get into graduate school. Your whole life is ruined! You are a drop out!

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!

Alexandria, IN(Zone 6a)

I've dreamed the school thing before....always problems like forgetting about classes and such.
Mainly I seem to dream about the workplace even though I am retired now. I was in the pipefitter /weldor trade. I wish I could get it right and move on!

Alamogordo, NM(Zone 7b)

I had the school dreams when I was in school but never since then. Try to visualize everything being ok and see if it helps in your dreams!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

The school theme seems to have wide "appeal"!

Greensboro, AL

It was a major anxiety!

Now it is workmen coming in and destroying my house.

Alexandria, IN(Zone 6a)

I had one dream once where I was flying [soaring] and it was so real that I declared in the dream that this was real and not a dream.

Another time I dreamed I was at work and this time I knew it was a dream. It was like taking a tour in the past [kind of like the Christmas Carol---Christmas past] I saw the big old 97 presses going up and down and workers at their places. I finally asked one man what was the date and he replied, "......."

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Interesting the feelings of certainty about it being a dream or not.

I was led to this site from someone in another Forum.
Nice to see you here--Sally!

I tried clicking on some of the provided links within the articles--but that seemed to be too time-consuming,,,,or too scientific.....

I will "tag" this post and see what ewlse surfaces....

I've been remembering dreams since I started this. Had a long one last night that may have meant "there"s a lot of effort involved in life sometimes and then you don't even get your payoff."

Greensboro, AL

for me the pig is back. When I was a kid we had a huge pig named Elmer who would chase me. For a long time even after I left home that pig would be chasing me in my dreams - I was able to fly over the fence and save my life from becoming pig food. Now Elmer is back and he is meaner than ever!

Alamogordo, NM(Zone 7b)

gloria, please try to sit a few minutes before bed and envision the dream then add a high fence to stop him or whatever you wish you could have done as a child. Hopefully it will be like my dog dreams and stop them. I was pretty skiddish around dogs in general and am not so scared of them now.

Greensboro, AL

cactuspatch: I think this pig is a very symbolic pig. I am involved in a court case and these particular pigs have stolen a whole lot of money from me.

I will try the exercise.

Alamogordo, NM(Zone 7b)

In that case I would envision the pigs and their lawyers on a spit!

Greensboro, AL

Excellent suggestion!

I have had several dreams that I was at a job and when it came time for me to leave, I could not find my purse with my keys, in others I could not find my car to go home where my hubby and mom were waiting for me, my mom died in 1993. I was always panicky and late because I had to get home to cook. Seems I usually only dream when I take an afternoon nap, never at night.

Amelia Island, FL(Zone 9a)

I had two dreams yesterday morning. I remember the first, the second was similar, but not the same.

I was standing at a door in our house. I heard scary breathing on the other side. I kept moving closer to the door. Then I heard "this isn't real" and woke up.

A little creepy.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I think we need gloria to explain those

Greensboro, AL

Well, the "meaning" of a dream really comes from keeping track of what you are doing in your life and if the dream occurs in the same context generally. But, dreams about doors, and houses - especially a series of rooms or doorways with an opening at the end sometimes symbolize your life and where it is going.

The Azalea dream may be more literal. So much to do and here I am keeping everyone waiting while I take time for a nap. Over commitment? Pressure-ized?

The first dream discussed is about panic and not being able to find your purse.

My dreams of school usually involve showing up naked, or at least missing a vital piece of clothing!

Greensboro, AL

mine was forgetting my shoes! My mom said my feet were so ugly.
