Funny story here. Well first I need to tell you my washing machine hose empties into my stationary tub. I put a BIG bowl of MG potting soil in the tub and added water. I just wanted to make sure the soil was evenly moist. Well my son did a load of clothes. BIG mess!!! My question is, can I use any of the salvaged soil? Or, should I just pitch it outside?
I also posted this in the soil and compost forum.
washed soil?
Hmm. The potting mix got both washed and rinsed, so I wouldn't think it would have a lot of detergent left in it. I might use it for older plants rather than for seed sowing, just to be safe... or as you said, add it to a garden bed. But I'm thinking it should be OK -- after all, people add dish soap or Murphy's when they water to combat things like fungus gnats.
Just don't use it for anything really irreplacable, just in case.
Thanks, there really wasn't much left anyway. So the worse part was trying to clear the drain and clean up the mess!
I can imagine! If there's a trap below that sink, you might want to take it apart and empty it out. Peat moss should wash on through, but I'm less sure about perlite...
