Rescue Lamb

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Just got a call from DH. One of the neighbors called him to ask if we would take in a ewe lamb that was born this morn. Her mom has a severely prolapsed uterus. She's lambed fine for the past five years but this ewe lamb was large and wasn't positioned properly. I have a feeling that she was in labor for awhile before they went out in the barn and saw her. The lamb has had one feeding off of mom and will have another one before we go over tonight and get her. I prefer 24 hours of colostrum but have successfully raised them on less.
So after calling 4 feedstores in the area, we found milk replacer so DH will be picking that up from work. I've got to go out in the shed and look for nipples and bottles. She'll be staying in the house with us until at least this weekend. I don't want her w/ the ewes so we'll be making a place just her.

I'll be getting lots of pics! ☺

Thanks! I'm sure I've got myself a new best friend! lol

Oh, boy! Please post pictures. But not really, really, really cute ones -- I don't need to add sheep to the farm dream.

(sung in the tune of the little indian song)

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

lol! You guys! Thanks Harm now that song is stuck. :-)
I took pics last night and was going to post then but I misplaced my camera in all the commotion.
She ate about an ounce before bedtime and she slept until my alarm went off. Then she drank 5 ounces of replacer. Once she figure out the nipple, there's no stopping her! And yes, I'm in love already!

She likes to check everything out.
My spaniel is terrified of her. She wouldn't get off the bed last night! My shepard/bull terrier mix(Pinkie Lee) is in love. Pinkie has always loved all the sheep and goats. She kept trying to groom her last night and then the lamb would start following her around like she was her mother!

awww how sweet is that! DH would kill me if i even thought of getting one!! but then he raised sheep when he was younger...hmmmm..nah better not!! lol

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Hey you won't have to mow the grass! lol

My nephew and Parkay are getting along great. She's really taking to the bottle. I've had some that just don't understand so it takes them a few days to figure out the bottle is where the milk is!

Oh My Goodness that is the cutest little lamb (and child)!!!!
I know nothing about what you said the mom has but I take it its bad. Did she die? That is sooo sad!! I am glad the little lamb is okay and has a new home with lots of love!! Congrats on the new best freind!!! awwww

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Thanks! She's already attempting little springing hops after her bottle. We've decided on Beverly Lynn for her name. She is a beauty!

Her mom's condition was such that she had to be put down. :-(

Awwww...adorable! I can't wait for our lambs in spring. What fun! I'm glad she's in such good hands!

Harmony's song is stuck in my head now...

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

I banded her tail at 2 days old. We do ours longer than the show animals. I look at where the tail web ends and place the band there.

She's eating 8 ozs 4x's a day for now. After 10 days old she'll be getting 12 ozs 3xs a day. Which she finishes off in 5 minutes! I love how she shakes her tail as she's drinking.

Awww, she is growing up already!!! Her little face is so kissable!!!

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

She likes to give everyone little kisses on your hands and chin! And she's spoiled rotten already. :-)
It was 38* yesterday w/ the sun out so I hung out in the front yard with her. She was running and jumping; also chasing the cat! The cat came over slowly and they touched noses. Then the lamb sprang and off they went.

Sweet. I am still working on DH. He just built his lean too. I said, Oh that is perfect for the goats. He did not laugh. hmmm...I will take that as a maybe. ;)

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

LOL!! You're too funny sewincircle. You've got to sow those seeds! :-)

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

DH does not feel that I am very funny. I think his humorous is BROKEN!!!

Clarkson, KY

DH knows the ramifications of being taken seriously, lol. Still --I'm on your side!!

Sew: Your a devious little stinker. Your DH is right. You are not funny!!! So why am I laughing so hard?!!! Probably because he has to put up with your antics and not me.LOL Must say I love your mischievous little inuendos though. Haystack

Cute little thing.

I've never seen a sheep or a lamb before. Why do they band the tails? I can imagine it would get really dirty, but honestly am curious....

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Yes, to keep the backend cleaner also it's easier for breeding purposes-without going into much detail. :-) People who have show animals band them as close to the body as they can but there can be complications from this.(just from what I've read not from experience).

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

I have never seen a sheeps tail that has not been banded. I figured it was for cleanliness. But I was not sure. Good to know.

Yes Haystack, DH does smile every now and then. Usually after he takes his stress tabs. hehehe I am a stinker??? Thats why DH buys all the scented candles! hmmmm Good to know. hehehe
Thanks for being on my side Grow. You got my back. ;)

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I have one that was never banded - she has a very long tail, but I think it's cute!

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

She must look adorable when she wags it!

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

I feel a need for more photos!!! hehehe

Meet Poppy! And her tail!

I never knew sheep had tails this forum teaches me something new all the time!

Thanks Claire and Thanks Poppy for sharing your Tale of your Tail LOL

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I guess they are usually banded and then the bottom part falls off and that's for cleanliness and easier birthing (less mess) but I think she's adorable with her long tail, and since her fleece is not the really long curly type (like angora, for instance), I see no problem in giving it a little wash now and then if it gets messy.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

WOW!! They do look different with the full tail!!! Cute!!! Thanks for the picture!!! I doooo love pics!!! ;)

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Hello Poppy! Love her tail! She's a nice looking ewe, Claire.

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

It was 57* yesterday! Much warmer then what was forecasted. Owen was bird-watching the bird feeder while Beverly hopped around the yard. Very nice afternoon. :-)
