lantana

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

trying to germinate lantana for the first time any advice,
and my seeds are three years old

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

If I recall correctly they need pre-soaking in an H2O2/water mix. They *may* require nicking, but don't quote me on that one.

thank you will soak in warm water overnight before planting

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

All I ever do is squish them out of the pulp then sew. They grow like weeds for me....but the butterflies and hummers love them.

I dont think I can squish them out they are dry and hard will soak them and see what happens

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

soak them in the hottest water your tap will produce for a couple hours then see if you can squish them. They'll gernimate w/ pulp on but not as good a percentage as w/o the pulp.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

ah ok now I learned something again thank you will do that this afternoon
cant wait to see them growing in my side garden

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

good luck

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

well now I know why you said squish them out they are hard inside lol so soaked planted and waiting

how long do I have to wait for them to come up

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

Do you have them on heat? Lantana are hot weather plants. Generaly won't do anything untl weather is warm. Mine bloom from summer until a hard frost takes them out in late fall.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I have some heat lisianthus germinated in 10 days so it should work for the lantanas also I hope, how long does it take from germination for them to actually bloom

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

probably next year

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

so are you telling me that I will have to grow them for 15 months to get a bloom lol
and guess what my zone is to cold so I will have to bring them in hahahah ok going to think hard about this one

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

Probably so. I didn't want to be the bearer of bad news...*G*
Although mine have survived to grow and bloom after a winter where they were buried under 12 days of ice and snow. An uncommon occurance in my zone.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

here i would have to bring them in
do they go dormant in the winter example loose the foliage

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

yes....I trim mine back to just about 2-4 inches. They look like little dead stick right now but they'll spring back out .

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

my latana are in pots that I bring indoors and place in the basement during the winter. They go dormant, then I bring them out in the spring - so far so good. ^_^

My basement is quite cold - the storage room is probably in the low 40 degrees this time of year.

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

My greenhouse is un-heated.Even the "Banana Split" lantana and cuphea "Georgia Scarlet"comes back in spring when I over winter them out there.I experimented last winter with a pot of Cat Whiskers and they came back last spring too.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

so I guess if I brought them into the garage to protect them against the windchill they would be ok well wont make any plans till the seeds sprout lol carriage in from of the horse at the moment hahahahah

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

Yup,seems as long as they're protected from that nasty winter stuff that falls from the sky, they're ok.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

so then its that if the roots freeze wet then they die as long as I let them dry out before storage they will do fine cool since I am running out of space inside hahahha arent well all certainly at seed time
