February Hoyas

I am totally out of my element here! I have 4 hoyas at the moment., Hoya Curtsii, which mounds beautifully but has nver bloomed, lacunosa, which has been sulking all winter b/c last fall, I accidentally hacked off half the plant when I was taking cuttings for a friend, a variegated HD noid, which I just noticed has at least one bud, and, my fave, Bella lancelota variegata--which has buds inspite of the fact I cut it back to send that same friend cuttings(see Pic) This will be its second bloom--the flowers are so pretty. Are there any other small varieties similar to this one? Space is at a premium here.

Nice job with the curtsii!! I have killed more of that one than I care to admit.

Try giving the curtisii more light! Mine get very bright indirect light and bloom alot. Also, never let it get dry which it does not like. It was discovered after a big storm when a bunch of trees blew down and it was living in the tops of trees...in Philippines.

Ah! Water would be the issue--I do tend to let it dry out--thanks--I will try giving it more frequent watering.
Also--I lied...I have 5 hoyas--this is my variegated hindu rope--also cut back---blah-blah....sulking

This is my HD noid--if anyone wants to take a shot at ID. It had occasional pink leaves. I can't get a better pic at the moment as I can't move it....and I will show you why in next post...

It has grown into what used to be my lizard house! It couldn't keep the lizards in, and I guess it can't keep the hoya out!

Looks like a Hoya carnosa variegata.

PV...I agree with Hills...H. carnosa 'Krimson Queen' which looks like it is reverting back to solid green...

I have a Krimson Queen who's shoots have reverted to solid green. Ive cut these out, but I noticed they are heavily undulated, and am rooting them, They have an appearance of 'Krinkles 8'

Your little bella and curtisii are looking great. I have no luck with either one of them. I'm down to one little stem on the plain bella, and the curtisii has only three little stems left. I am going to re-pot them into a heavier soil and see if that helps them. They may not be getting enough water.
As for the other hoya of yours, I would agree with Carol, that it's carnosa 'Krimson Queen. If I were you I would try and trim off the solid green leaves (if you can, without destroying the look of the plant.)

As I take a good look at it, I think it is too late! It has always been a little short on variegation.--I will get another at some point.

No snow angels for me... still had to try and get to work, despite the crippled transport system!

Much sunnier today... but there's still patches of snow on the ground... they say it might come back in force by the end of the week, lucky us!

They told us it was coming from Russia, but then the animation I saw last night said it had come from France, so now I'm just confused.. but a cold Gulf stream can't help. All the kids are loving the days off school!

Found this H obscura at Walmart ! It's loaded with blooms and smells heavenly.

My first bloom! My H. lacunosa bloomed and smells lovely! Sure brightens up the cold weather we've been having!

H. curtisii...the whole plant is about 1.5' wide and 3' long...so far 11 flowers...

A H. cv. Ruthie that seems to want to grow all yellow without the brown/orange in it. I like it....

I wish my curtisii would bloom, it's big enough as far as size is concerned but no flowers yet.

I love that Ruthie and cannot wait to see blooms on mine. I put this one outside under a tree where it still gets sun..since the leaves have mostly fallen...last summer I guess. It survived the cold winter and now I am anxious to see how fast it puts out new growth.

You were curious to know if the Stemmas would do well here with our temps a bit colder than yours. So far, so good. And I am happy to report all my Stemma starts are growing and have not lost one leaf during the unsettling months of being covered and moved around quite a bit.
What I want to do is plant them beneath a trellis that is being installed over my three garage doors...I think they would look nice draped over the front of the house.

I dont know whats wrong with my H curtisii's..........I have 2 pots, and neither wants to grow, never mind flower. Is this one that can be slow to start?

Joni....I think they would be smashing on a trellis...and you should get lots of blooms. Do you have H. lauterbachii?

Dom...H. curtisii is a slow grower...but it does NOT like drying out and likes a lot of VERY bright indirect light...at least, that's what mine likes...Since the 'crown' totally covers the pot, I don't water as much...maybe twice a week as the pot/medium is insullated from drying out...

I have two H. lauterbachii and they are each 2" stumps? Right now I've got them in my Hydroponic system trying to revive them. For some reason I have had no luck with them but am searching for another rooted plant hoping for better success. I think you sent me one last summer but... Is there a 'secret' to growing this one that I don't know about?

I just love that H. patella...cannot wait to grow mine from DL. Is the bloom fragrant? Do you have more than one penducle on your plant?

I'm just loving everyone's flowers this month, as always. My hoyas have had a difficult time this past year and I've lost quite a few of them this winter in our new house trying to regulate the heat and plug up all of the drafts in this old house. But I think that spring is around the corner and its healing effects are working. I noticed these flowers had started opening last night but the battery was dead on my camera, as usual. So they had to wait until tonight to get their picture taken. Just as well, they're all open now. These are H. siariae's very first flowers.

I really don't detect any sent at all, but I'm bad when it comes to subtle scents in plants, I guess my nose doesn't work (lol) This is the fourth time it blooms for me, the first time I had two flowers (here is the pic) The other three times only one, but as pretty as it is I'm still very happy with just one.

Great growing everyone! Lourdes, I am loving H. patella! That's one I just had to have after Carol posted a photo recently! I just ordered it from DL with Joni's order, and I can't wait to get it!

Christine: Wow, I love the looks of that bloom on your H. siariae! That's a new one to me, it sure is pretty! Do you have a picture of the foliage? I'm just curious, are the leaves small on that one? Maybe I will go google it to see if I can find a picture of the leaves.

No, the leaves are not small at all. They're about 1" to 1 1/2" wide and 5" to 9"long, the newer the leaves, the longer they get. And I just love the veining in them. But the flowers are almost transluscent and have that cup-shape that's so cool. I detect a very slight scent, not unpleasant, but not flowery either, kind of hard to describe.
