OT: February Blooms

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

digger, I am absolutely overflowing with flower envy! That Zygo is breathtaking! I'm so jealous!!!! Please, do tell, what kind of soil, light, humidity, what, what, what are you doing to make this pretty lady bloom? Oh, nevermind, I just looked and saw that you live in Florida! LOL

I have Zygopetalum 'Jumping Jack Big Beans'- the blooms smell like heaven. I think that's why I envy you so much, b/c I can't get her to bloom again. I long to smell those flowers!

(Zone 1)

Love that one called Baldan's Kaleidoscope! Such a pretty Phal.
I have one orchid in bloom right now. I don't have a clue as to it's name. Last summer, the squirrels pulled all the labels out of the pots, some went missing ... the label's as well as orchids, I found remnants of orchid bark and spaghnum moss on the ground under the tree but no signs of the plants or labels on a few! I figured either birds or squirrels decided to decorate their nests or maybe the squirrels ate them?

I'm not sure if this is one of my Wal-Mart clearance rescues or if it's one I got in trade.

I went back out and took a picture close up of the bloom.

I have to throw in a couple of very ugly pictures! We had three nights of freeze week before last. Temp's got down to 26 one night and 28 two nights in a row. One day we didn't even make it to 50 degrees for the high .... so unusual for us! The coldest weather we've had in a long time.

So .... this is what my Tree Philodendron's look like in the side yard from the freeze

(Zone 1)

And, it's hard to tell what this even is! My @ 7' tall Euphorbia tirucalli, "Pencil Tree"

I have two more smaller ones out in the yard that I haven't even checked ... they might be totally dead.

(Zone 1)

Phoenix Robellini Palm got hit from the cold temp's too. We had this covered with a heavy blanket but it was just too cold. I will cut the damaged fronds off in a couple of weeks.

(Zone 1)

Even the tall Queen Palms didn't like the cold ... some browning and yellowing fronds, but they are more cold tolerant than others.

I really can't complain ... it is a blue sky, sunshiny, warm and breezy 82 degrees right now!

I would love to plant Queen Palms in the yard......just love them!

(Zone 1)

I do too Gail. We have three in our front yard and two in the back yard. I have heard some say they are invasive but we haven't found that to be the case. I have not seen any little ones sprouting up at all. Maybe it's farther south where they cause a problem?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

We have two planted at the church that are magnificent specimens!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Here are my 'nothing' orchids I have blooming. Don't know any names except I recognize what kind.

I will be getting named cultivars as my friend Betty gets a new orchid every other month as a Christmas gift ......After they bloom she gives them to me. My first one is called Toy Box (I have lost the tag already)

Let me take a quick picture of her.

My poor vandas I must share, too.........they looked so great last year. But, they are putting on new roots so maybe there is a chance, they, too, shall bloom again for me.

This is the saddest vanda........

I wanna live at Gail's Botanical Gardens! I swear Gail, you have the mostest, prettiest, beautiful plants! Wow! The orchids are wonderful!

Shows what I know about orchids cause those Vanda's look pretty good to me! I would just spray them with some water. I bet you will get blooms from them in another month or two when it begins to really warm up!

We had a high of 83 yesterday and it was sunny, breezy and beautiful. Today has been overcast at times, sunny at times, then clouds again and our high was only in the mid 70's. Still nice though. I hope we don't have anymore really cold nights. I don't mind it it gets to about 45 but I hate when it drops down into the 30's and really get mad when we have 2-3 nights in the 20's like a couple of weeks ago!

Spring is right around the corner everyone .... Promise! ^_^

Gail ... Thanks so much for the e-mail you sent me here at home with the attachment! It is Awesome! I sent it to my sister and a couple of friends!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin, we have been lucky to only have a few night of barely freezing and I could keep the heaters going on the front porch. I didn't open the doors on the porch today as it was 66 in the house this morning. I didn't know we were getting cool weather. Then just a minute ago I went out to the porch and the thermometer read 83 degrees so I quickly opened the screen doors.

That email choked me up, too.

That is great looking.......I have never been able to grow strawflowers either in Houston or here. They did great in Austin. Keep us posted on them.......

South, TX

They have been growing for a year. I just love them!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

She looked like a small new plant.........don't they get about 18-20" tall? I may be thinking of another flower.

***edited to say I am a ditz, Sally!

It is just a close up of flowers. They are not tiny, not huge.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

They are just right Sally! (said Goldilocks) They are very pretty, and great for dried arrangements, wreaths, and tiny gardens. Up here, they bloom later in summer and fall.

South, TX

Your not a ditz, Gail!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Sally, are you going to try and go to the Austin show in March? I want to go to also see my son but I haven't made up my mind. It should be a fabulous show. I need to take my son and his significant other out to dinner and visit.....

South, TX

I don't know. I haven't thought about it. I guess I need to see if it works out!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

From what they were saying at the meeting last night, the Austin show is only going to be open to the public from 11am-5pm on Saturday. I figure I'll try and get someone to watch the kids, so I can go and browse in peace!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Actually, Nichole and Sally, those are good hours for me. I can go up on Friday, spend the night and take the kids out...........then, go to the show at 11:00 and drive on home on Saturday.........

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Ooh, I see a group photo in the works! I better get to work on my t-shirt!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Group photo? I hope I have teeth in my mouth by then ^_^
If I don't, I won't be going anyway.........in public that is!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

You could always hold a violet up - and peek out the top . . .

Took this photo yesterday. I have two diff. Jewel Orchids in this pot, you can't see one of them. One is blooming.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Sally that's the Jewel I've had for years--do you do anything special to keep the growth compact? Mine has been blooming almost all winter---even the cuttings in water bloom--LOL! What is the other one you have?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I love Jewel Orchid! I sold all I had on DG marketplace (LOL), but I do know where to get some more.......Seguin had baskets of them last year.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

I love the phal orchids!
I bought this one yesterday for my desk at work.
I had been looking for a nice one since Christmas, and this one has two blooming stalks!

That's a pretty one Rose! Where did you buy it?

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Wal-Mart had a whole bunch of them... presumably for V-day... $15.00 each!
I wanted more! Pretty color choices!

Just found this in a pot outside...
Don't even know how long ago I planted crocus in there!
A welcome sign of spring *sigh*

After church today I ran by Walmart for only cat food and passed by a giant table of Phals that were no longer blooming (although very healthy) marked at 7.00 each. It took all my will power to not pick up a few.

**edited to say that the phal you posted are my favorite colors in phals................
