WSing Thyme, Sage or Rosemary

Falls Church, VA(Zone 7a)

Anyone been successfull WSing Thyme, Sage or Rosemary? Do they germinate and transplant well?

Flora, IN(Zone 5a)

I was hoping to see an answer to your question.
I grow many herbs but have only purchased plants of the above .
Maybe if you ask the question on the Herb forum someone there might know.
When I don't know about a seed I plant half and save half in case it fails.

Well, I plan to WS thyme and sage today so will report back about success or failure.

(Thymus vulgaris and Salvia officinalis -- just basic stuff, nothing fancy. ;-) )

I did read somewhere rosemary is not easy to grow from seed, so not trying that just yet.

Well, I'm going to try WSing thyme and sage too. I can always propagate the Rosemary from cuttings- I have a three foot tall bush in my side yard.

I've done lavendar with great success, but not those.

I tried rosemary from commercial seeds. It produced few sprouts and by summer's end they were so small they were hardly visible. I'm just going to buy a small transplant again this year.

Thanks for your comments- I think I'll just try one jug with rosemary and see what happens, but I'll still do some from cuttings too.

I Winter Sowed both Common Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) and Creeping Thyme (Thymus serphyllum) . I had great germination rates for both. They both were "carpet of seedling" containers...did I sow too heavily? Me?? Never! The picture below shows my Common Thyme container.

Oh, beautiful! Was that last year? Or this? What month did you sow?

I have not seen my thyme sproutlets yet........

Sterling, VA(Zone 6b)

No...not this year...I guess my post is not clear on that. The date on the picture is April 18, 2007. Right now I have been figuring out what I want to sow this year so I do not have any containers out yet...I still have lots of plants in pots from last year!

Edit to add...sown on 3/9/2007...first sprouts noted on 3/30/2007...so the picture above was about a month after they were sown.

Thanks Brent, I am glad it is not this year as I would feel mine were late to sprout, LOL! I confess I did not think to look at the date stamp, could've answered my own question there........

Brent: Do you still pot up all your seedlings before planting out into beds?

I do generally transplant my seedling to small pots and let them grow there for a while before they go in the ground. It adds a bit of work and cost (for potting soil) to the process but it works for me.

I started some rosemary (indoors under lights) on Jan 24. It was an open packaged from 2006/2007. Most germinated. I used 1/2 seed starter mix and 1/2 cactus mix. Also only water when dry. They are still germinating with 3 tiny little one that popped up a couple of days ago. In total 19 germinated. No heat mat. Cooler temps. 60ºF to 70ºF

I did some rosemary seeds yesterday and satuck them out with the rest of my stuff. Did Pasley, sage rosemary & thyme... LOL and basil, cilantro, chives and Tai basil. I have not done any herbs from seed before. Hope I get some of them to germinate!

I just sowed some rosemary today, but thought I would try germinating on a heat mat indoors. I also heard it was hard to grow from seed, but somehow I must have bought them, so I am going to try anyway. Let you know what happens...

I just WSed some Rosemary and Thyme seeds yesterday. They are out in the snow, so we'll see if they grow.

I put some Rosemary seeds out for winter sowing and some in my little indoor green house. I'll see what happens with them as well. :)
