An intervention was in order

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

It was actually more of a rescue. When I got to the barn yesterday and went out to the chicken yard, I found poor little BJ had been pretty roughed up. I have 2 bantam roos, 4 bantam hens and 1 duck hen in the pen. I figured there would be fighting one day and I am actually suprised it has waited until now. It looked like Trey had wallowed BJ in the cold mud most of the night and pecked his little rose comb up pretty bad. I brought BJ home with me last night and let him sleep in a big gray tote lined with fresh hay. He was warm and dry and had feed and water. I figured he looked a lot worse off than he actually was because he was wet and dirty. One eye was closed so I washed it with a bit of warm water. This morning I added a bit of antibiotic to his water and dabbed some neosporin on his eyes and comb. He is lively and pecking at me so I think he will be fine. I brushed some of the dirt out of his feathers but it will take a while for them to return to their former beauty. Now I have to figure out what to do with him. I can't put him back in with Trey. So, for now, he is roosting on top of the rabbit pen in the dining room. We'll see what the rabbit has to say about it. LOL

Awwww poor lil guy! I'm glad you caught it in time. I got a Millie that was pecked pretty bad and like you say, it looks a lot worse then it is. I hope you get it straightened out soon.

poor baby. now you need to make him a house pet

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

My DH is very understanding but even he draws the line at a chicken as a house pet. LOL

BJ is not big enough to bother eating. (she grins her evil grin)

Sapello, NM(Zone 5b)

Shish-kabob chicken!
(also grinning evil grin)

Trade for a cochin?

Poor BJ!!! I hope he recovers okay. Where are you going to put him when he is healed? If you put him back he may get more of the same. :/ House chicken...My DH would say no way too! hehehe...

Haven't decided what to do with him yet. I know he can't go back in with Trey. He'll just get beat up again. He is older than Trey but he is smaller. Also, while BJ is full stock bantam, Trey is 3/4 bantam and 1/4 game cock. He doesn't have any quit in him.

I moved the setting hen into the barn with her nest. I put her in a dog kennel in the hay stall. It's the same kennel she was hatched in. I was afraid if the chicks hatched and jumped out of the nest, they would die on the frozen ground inside the pen. I have tin over the top of one end but it has some leaks. The biggest part of the floor, which is dirt, has a sheet of ice about 1 inch thick over it. I hope the move doesn't cause her to give up the nest. But it had to be done or they would have died anyway. I moved her mom a lot farther with her nest and she finished setting but it wasn't her first hatch. Her Mom is a feisty little hen. When I caught the setting hen off the nest she really set up a ruckus. I was watching Trey because I expected him to come after me but it was the little hen, her Mom, that tried to flog me. LOL

All I can say is Trey should be reminded what goes around comes around. He is a RUDE DUDE !!!!!!LOL. Haystack

Here is BJ before he was assaulted. Anybody know what kind of Bantam he is? My chicken friend says that any chicken with a rose comb has decended from spanish stock.

that BJ needs his own flock to look after. Such a beauty.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Isn't he a pretty little guy? He is a bit bredraggled now but he is doing well. It will take quite a while for his feathers to look so nice again. He is still in the house with us.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Yes Cajun he is gorgeous! My little girls feathers came back in and she looks good as new. I know his will too. He will be back to his handsome self. ;)

Social Circle, GA(Zone 8a)

If you were closer I'd come get him! Argh - what am I saying?

one day one day one day. I have a stall screaming for an inmate.

Greensboro, AL

GA is not that far from KY. Maybe you could find a trucker who would transport?

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

if trey don't behave, you can send him to my house :)

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Trey's home is secure because he is the grandroo of my pet, Abraham. Abe was a full stock Blue Spanish Muff fighting cock. Of course, I never fought him. He was my beloved pet but I lost him to a fox or a coyote up at the farm. AJ was his son and Trey is AJ's son. That is how Trey got his nsme. He is the third in the line. Abe looked just like Trey but 3 times as big.

BJ is doing fine. He is perched on the side of his big gray tote crowing to beat the band. When he gets back to his former beauty, I may be able to trade him for a hen.

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Trey looks like the Roo that someone gave me, his coloring at least... Our Roo has missing tail feathers, I think he got roughed up and that is why he was given to us... He is pretty

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I saw it mentioned in one of the threads about a rumpless I believe it was an Aracauna? Would the roos also have no tail feathers?

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

No his look like they were chewed off, but they are starting to come back now..

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

We'll be needing before and after shots.

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

I got my camera ready and will try and get some pix today.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I'll be waiting patiently. Oh, Alright... I'll be waiting , okay.
