I hear you Silkie! COME ON SPRING!!! The egg is so dark. Its pretty!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Wow.. pretty egg Silkie.. show it to your Seramas.. make em jealous.. LOL

That's a great haul Cindy!

Ferndale, WA

WOW!!! Cindy are all those eggs from comets? They are beauties and look like very large eggs! How many comets do you have? Mcmurray Hatchery call's them red stars but they are the same bird. I have thirty of them comming Feb ninth.

Silkie! Did I read your post correctly? Did it say store bought eggs??? Edadds!! SHssssh, don't say that to loud. That welsummer egg looks a lot like a cuckoo marans egg, very dark.

Richmond, MI(Zone 5a)

haystack are you saying that the darker brown eggs will be ros if hatch? i know if pointy they are ros

Brookville, PA(Zone 5a)

Yes Haystack, those are all from the comets..i have 16 girls, and i get about 16 a day..they are all large or xtra large eggs..they all came from MT Healthy in ohio..never got a bad bird from them..

lol, if the seramas and frizzled cohins where laying i'd know spring was here for sure. thanks everyone, i was so excited to see it!

yes it looks like a lighter marans egg. ones i've hatched have been way darker but these two wells eggs she laid r darker than my terra cotta pots so i know i got a good bloodline in them. i have a spring trade lined up with a few people to get a flock going this year and looking forward to it!

lol, yes i said store bought i have to buy them everyone here is on strike except the wells girl who once a week gives me one egg if i'm lucky sometimes longer, rotfl. i got 7 people to make breakfast for. i hate store bought eggs and love fresh we all do there is no compairison there but in winter we have to. in our experience neither darker or pointer tells sex it is the temperature range. i usually hatch mostly pullets but my customers hatch 50/50 to more roos, lol.

ur comets r beautiful they r one of the first breeds i started with when i got into poultry.

Brookville, PA(Zone 5a)

silkie if ya want eggs, you can get some of mine..they are only 1.25 a dz..the girls are laying like crazy..stop over if youre in the area..

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I'm hatching like 75 to 90% Roos! What do you mean temp? Constant temp, temp outside, High temp, low temp?? Oh DO tell..

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

kool, thank u. i don't want to be hatching yet still way to cold out so come closer to spring i'll get ahold of u for some and i'll see if any of my chicken friends up this way r wanting any too before i come down. do u have eggs for any other breeds too?

zz, what we can tell from our own hatching over the years is if the bator temp is higher u get more roos if the temp is lower u get more girls. i do agree sometimes the pointy eggs r correct and r roos but most of the time we get 50/50 on that one.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Thank you! I totally believe it.. I don't know about the recent hatches yet, cause they are too little.. but the ones that hatched a day early were 5 roos out of 7 chicks and 3 out of 4.
Catscan sent me a link were I read somewhere that the pullets were more susceptible to temperature fluctuations than roos.. so I've been trying to watch that more... but it's near impossible with a Hova bator! I've got it stable now.. and my hatches are not early anymore.. so maby I'll get a few pullets for a change!
I haven't had any of the "bullet" shaped eggs develop..

Brookville, PA(Zone 5a)

no silkie, unfortuately the only ones i have now are the comets..no roos either, just good yummy eggs..but they lay such wonderful eggs, that i sure cant complain..send me a dmail or email and ill make sure i have them for you..thanks

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

u r welcome, i have sportsmans now so it stays steady in both but u r right when i had my 2 lg's and 2 hovas they always bounced and i had probs. i always had more roos hatch then. they can be a bugger to regulate.

lol, i miss read that hehe i got hatching withdrawls on the brain sorry. i see now u ment yummy farm fresh eggies for eating. i'll get ahold of u when the roads r better out and we r gonna be down that way again.
thanks,
silkie
