Keeping the fire going till springtime, pull up a chair...

Ooh...I checked and it's 65 there....that's kind of mean!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Some benefits to being old, 67 here. Just glad I managed to get this far.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

I'm just starting to feel that myself. Every birthday, I go whew, thank the Lord! Still nothing really major wrong with me!

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

I take my hot diggity dog back.

Are ya'll talking about the Wildseed Farm? I haven't been there in a couple of years, but I don't remember paying an entrance fee. There is or used to be an Herb Farm also. That recently sold and I don't know what the new owners have done with it.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, I guess it depends on the place, MacDonnald's starts at 55 and Cracker Barrel at 50, but 65 qualifies you everywhere.

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

I just looked at the Wildseed Farms website and didn't see anything about a fee. But there are some interesting things on their event calendar.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Okay, my mistake...apparently all the parts where you can spend your money on their stuff has free admission. Only "The Meadows" with all their pretty gardens and butterfly house has an admission charge. Very clever people! I was told a few years ago that they charged for admission....noone said it was only for the best parts of that place.

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh ok. I didn't read all that stuff about the Meadows. I don't think I've ever been to any events out there. I'm usually working and don't pay much attention to what's going on in town. Don't even know what stores are in town unless friends or family come for a visit. If ya'll come then I'll have an excuse. I can play tour guide.:)

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I know I'm pushing the season, but I've been out planting things the last couple of mornings. It's just so nice out that I couldn't stand to wait any longer. Yesterday I planted all my swamp lilly bulbs that Podster kindly sent me. This morning
I've been out planting two rows of butterbeans, some Thai basil, some cleome and cosmos seeds and potted up a citrus tree. I'm calling it mystery citrus because my ex-DH brought it to me and said he didn't have a clue whether it was lemon, lime or orange. It'll smell good when it blooms regardless of what it is, so I potted it. I also put out 8 pots of bat face cupheas and a flat of impatiens. I think I need a couple more tomato plants, and maybe another flat or two of annuals and ........................ well, you get the picture. A garden is never "finished", it's more a living breathing thing that evolves and changes with time. Now I just have to find a place to put that 100 bulbs I ordered on the co- op.

Hope you're all having as nice a day as it is here. It's bright and cool out, perfect gardening weather.

You're killing me. I have been building a new bed and moving things around for about a week now. Anxious to plant out and spread more seed but the forecast for tomorrow night and Sunday is 32. YUK

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, that means bring all the plants in again, oh boy, it will be so nice when cold weather is over.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Wow, 32! I think our low's predicted for the next week are 60's. We actually hit 81 on this Monday. I waited until Tuesday when it was cooler to start playing in the dirt. I've acutally been running my a/c all week. Geesh, in Feburary no less. What on earth is it gonna' do in August?

(Lynn) Paris, TX(Zone 7b)

Our low tomorrow night is supposed to be in the upper 20's

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

It's going to be in the 40s Saturday night and the upper 30s here Sunday night, but then we'll go back up. It shouldn't bother Crow's new plants. :-) http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?zoneid=TXZ213

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Freeze tonight...29° is what is expected here, but San Antonio is supposed to be around 35°. I'll have to bring in the seedlings I put outside. And cover this one amazing basil that wasn't protected at all, looked dead and now has little leaves coming out on the stem! I've always wanted a basil that could somehow survive my winter. Yea!

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

Supposed to be 30° here tonight. Everyone is in their protected place and will be using the propane heater tonight in the GH. I got spoiled with the few nice warm days we had. Farmers Almanac is calling for a warmer April than normal. I wonder if I'll be missing the cooler air by then or will I wait until June. Never happy.

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

I have Thai basil in the garden that comes back every year. The first year it came back I was so surprised. I never expected basil to make it through the winter here.

My cannas are coming up, Erlicheer and Cheerfulness daffs are blooming, Thalia daffs not blooming yet. Roses are covered with leaf buds. I hope the deer don't eat the new leaves. My New Dawn rose is completely leafless - deer food. I had a surprise though when I was cleaning out the bed. It sent up 2 new canes about a foot away from the original stem.

My asiatic lilies are coming up! HMMMMM. Dear food! If we could just get some rain maybe they would stay out of my yard.

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

Crow, I'm with you on getting this planting done. We "shouldn't" have any weather that's too bad but we certainly could use a bit of rain. I'm always hesitant to wish for rain because it never knows when to stop once it starts. Where did you find the bat face cupheas? Hope I can find some soon since I want them to get acclimated before the hot weather hits because we all know that when the hot weather comes there's no going back until fall.

Laughing.....you're joking, right? Wishful thinking more often than not leads to disappointment, especially with deer.LOL

I'll take dry any day. When it's too wet about all one can do is to stay cooped up indoors and embrace depression.Yuk!

Well, I do stand a slight chance of having leaves and maybe even flowers. DH has been harvesting the deer every chance he gets.:) It's a win win for us because the freezer also stays full, but he has to stay up pretty late to catch them in the yard. We never had deer in the yard until this droubt started.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Ann, the cupheas I got last week from Great Western Growers just off Beltway 8 and Stancliff. They have a website with directions, but not nearly all their stuff is shown on the site. I love that place. It's wholesale, but open to the public on the weekends. They have the best selection and the absolute best prices you'll find anywhere around here. I think I paid less that 3 bucks each for 1 gal cupheas.

I'm off to plant my grandson's "salit" garden. I'm putting in some lettuce and cucumbers to go with the tomatoes. My 4 year olds favorite food is salad, so he should be thrilled to find out you can grown and pick your own.

Hope all y'all have a great day. I'm going to be gardening all day. I also found a Chinese Pistache tree to put in today. I'm a happy girl!

Crow, thanks for the info on Great Western Growers. I hope we can get there next time we are down that way. Though I don't know when that would be. Do they ever have creeping phlox?

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Brrr! 25.7° last night, my bones feel it, I think! I wish those weather people could get their act together.

I called it right last night when I decided to bring in the tomato plants. There was 1/8" ice in the cat's water bowl this morning at 9:00. The little maters have been outdoors at night since 2/10/08 nestling just fine in their little straw bale home, covered at night with a tarp of course.

With all the nice weather I find myself spending more time out in the garden and less time on the computer....guess that's the way it should be, huh.

It seems to go from Winter to Spring over night. It's like we wake one morning and realize that all the cold crops should have already been in the ground and I'm just now starting to get the beds ready. Yikes, gotta go!

You Gals get out there and get your hands dirty. Let's go!

O.K. Jerry, I am getting good and dirty today, after a freeze last night, I did bring my plants into the garage yesterday, boy, what a job!!! can't wait for Spring.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't think it froze here. I'm not sure how cold it got, but my tomatoes have been in the ground for a week or so now and they weren't affected at all in last night's cold snap. I did plant some lettuce and cucumber seed today.

I've weeded for so long today that I may be permanently stooped over. My back is killing me. You'd think as close to the ground as I'm built it wouldn't bother me so much :)

Well, I got good and dirty, what have the rest of you been up to today?

Crow

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

We have 3 indoor/outdoor thermometers and they all register within 3° of each other and they all read 31 or 32 @ 6:45 am today. But everything seems to be ok. Thanks Crow for that info. I'll try to get daughter #3 to go w/me to that Great Western Growers weekend after next. Next weekend we are off to LA for some good food and gambling for about 24 hours. Looking forward to seeing the great outdoors!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

31° here last night and stayed there long enough that the water in the bird bath was "hard" ~ frozen solid!

I didn't stay home today, we walked out the flea market, then I bought a new washer ~ got all the goodie out of the last one. Made a few more stops including feeding my face.

Please, if y'all don't mind, I'd like to start a new thread. We are so far from the fire on this long thread that it's getting kind of chilly. LOL http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/955700/
